Experience kayaking with me along the Carmans River on a sunny winter day! Graffiti covers a few areas around the river, but natural beauty still shines through. Enjoyed an invigorating cold plunge before stopping along the riverbank to cook lunch and soak in the sights and sounds. Finished the day with an incredible sunset.
The Carmans River is one of Long Island's longest rivers and is surrounded by a county park and a national wildlife refuge.

Great video. Good job at being interesting and interactive and avoiding just blabbering on and on. Subscribed and will be going back and checking out your other videos.

a long island favorite! i think i did this one with boy scouts/ everyone on LI who likes to paddle will probably go down this one at some point, nice to have such a great video of it thanks for sharing// as a sayville person i'll mention Brown's river is not very big but there is some fun to be had and some interesting stuff along the way, would love to see a video of that some day, hope you get to it... also fyi the river is calm enough you can paddle up it easily and there are 2 forks to explore. you can almost make it to lotus lake: you might even be able to make it all the way if you bushwhack.

Just an FYI, the dam at 21:48 is under construction currently and is apparently being replaced. The Upper Carmans River launch where I launched in Yaphank is currently closed. Might be a month or 2 before everything is opened back up. I have paddled the Browns River. I made it up to the tunnel on the north end near the train tracks before Lotus Lake (no video of it). Maybe I'll record something there in the future.

@@TwoFeetOutdoors excellent/ thanks for the info... i think that is as far as one can get on that fork.. you can also make it to the tracks on the other fork going towards mill pond if you want to try that but as you know it is not a very long ride, not really an all day type thing

Hey Matt - such interesting videos, especially the paddling ones. May I request that you let us know more about your starting/ending locations and any others points along the way. I'm a bit of a map nerd and love to see where you are. Thanks.

Hey these videos are great, that folding kayak setup looks really awesome. I gather that is an Oru yak, but what model is it?

You'd probably be amused to know I often start my day by watching one of your videos! I'm 77 years old and this is my way to get in touch with nature. Some questions: You seem to be very familiar with the routes you are kayaking...shallow/deep areas, low-lying branches, other obstacles, etc. What do you recommend for a first-timer who might run up against something challenging or insurmountable? This does not look like something a woman would want to do on her own...too isolated perhaps? Enjoying your efforts. Keep up the good work!

Also, overcoming challenges makes us stronger right? First timers and people with experience encounter challenges. Just have to find a resolution and keep moving forward.

Matt, it would be really helpful to know exactly where you put in, and the other details of the trip (is the river tidal). one-way trip? Really enjoying your content. (Oh and which foldable kayak you're using...sorry if you've answered these questions elsewhere, I'm a new subscriber).

I apologize, I missed this question. My kayak is an Oru Bay ST (Black Edition). The launch is in Yaphank, NY for the Upper Carmans River. This is a single direction paddle that went from Yaphank and finished in Southaven County Park. This section is not tidal. The next section south is tidal. The next section south can be seen in another video of mine. Cleaning up trash in a Wildlife Refuge. That's probably my favorite section of the Carmans River. Thank you for subscribing! I really appreciate it.

what keeps your pans on the fire with out sliding off ?

The stove that screws into the fuel bottle has 3 legs that support the pan underneath. You still have to be careful not to knock it over.

I've been dealing with a head cold lately, but I do uber and live about 15 min from there. Maybe we can work something out in the future when you are paddling there again. I've only paddled the south section of that river by the next roadway. Hoping to try that part in the spring

Absolutely, I enjoy the area south of Montauk Highway through Wertheim. No dams to deal with and no areas that are too shallow to paddle. I also like paddling side creeks. Thank you for commenting. Happy paddling. Hope you feel better!
