Will The 'Next Gen' Become Another 'Lost Gen'?
The news of Roger Federer’s latest operation, ruling him out of action for an unspecified period, and Rafael Nadal’s decision to sit out the rest of 2021 through injury has reminded us all of their tennis mortality.
And although Novak Djokovic should still be competing at the top for another few years, there will come a day when the so-called 'Big Three' - the trio of men who have hoovered up most of the major honours for almost 20 years - is no longer active on tour.
Which begs the well-worn question - who’s next?

Imagine being so well versed in your respective fields that the only option to dethrone you is that you retire willingly, that your body gives up on you and age catches up to you. And that because no other human being could catch up to you. You know, that's when you got some. GOATs

Unfortunately impossible to predict the future of Tennis. In the early 2000s Hewitt and Roddick were hyped up as the next two great players of men's tennis...even I thought they were going to win multiple Slams. Then Roger caught 🔥 🎾

I believe the conditioning and physical fitness that is developed over long periods of time truly helps the older players nowadays. A lot of the older players are physically more developed. Especially since a lot of the sport has slowed down, conditioning is very much key to winning a two week grand slam or masters event.

Tennis is moving more and more towards older people. This is not just for ATP, even on WTA we rarely see teenage phenoms. lately nadal looks more and more vulnerable against next gen outside clay and on the other hand zverev, stef and med are consistently going deep in slams and masters with their obstacle being largely novak. Novak can't win everything all the time, there will come a time soon when one of these 3 will win a slam. But it could also happen that some one from the younger generation will step up and dominate. However stef,med and sascha are much better than the lost gen as they've actually won masters. especially zverev and medvedev who won their masters while the big 3 were relatively playing well.

Fed is almost done at least in Grand Slams. Nadal may be another French Open or 2 max. Djoker may be can go on for another 2-3 years. So real next Gens have chance after 2023 for more consistent wins.

With all Hope for Next Gen ,Tennis is all about Mental Ability to accept the greatness of Senior Players and work on the variety of the Game to bring on different surfaces and against different opponents. I am a big Fan of Rafa, but great respect for Djokovic as he struggled for few years figuring out how to win over Roger and Rafa. And Now he is standing tall next to both of them. If Next Gen ,can take him as a reference on How to become Good to Great its not Impossible.

The next Gen are psychologically weaker than the big 3, unfortunately, it is very clear that when faced with big challenges during the matches, they are more likely to not know how to find a solution. No wonder why Tsisipas is pushing for on-court coaching. Also back when the big 3 came there was no social media and the attention of the players was more on the game than on who has what image in social. Maybe it is just my opinion though. I think lets wait and see how US Open goes, really hoping Zverev or Medvedev close deal.
@mykefaustino
@mykefaustino 2 жыл бұрын
I agree. Its all psychology and attitude thats whats keeping these next gen from reaching their full potential. They have the game, maybe not all around like the big 3, but they have what it takes. Out of these guys (Medvedev, Zverev & Tsitsipas) I'd say Medvedev has the better mindset amongst them. I was routing for Thiem back then when he had his magnificent run but so sad to see him plagued with injuries. I said this before on another post how times have changed. Fed, Rafa and Joker won their first major when they were about 21-22 yrs old. And now looking at this new generation, seeing how old they are now and has yet to break a GS title. It's just disappointing to see. And again it all boils down to the attitude and mindset. If they will keep on being ranting children on court then i dont know what the future of the sport will be.

The next gen has already been lost. 2016-2018 Novaks Era ended when he struggled to win a grand slam in 2 years. That was officially Novaks end of his era and the next gens at the time should have taken over but they failed to do so. Nadal and Djokovic are not even in their best shape and they have dominated the game since 2018 to 2022 and it looks like they'll dominate 2 more years. Winning Grand slams post 2016 has been much easier for GOAT level players than it ever has been im the history of the sport. When Sampras and Agassi were coming out of their prime, a young Federer was there waiting to take the reigns and he dominated. When Federer left his prime in 2010, Nadal and Djokovic were there to take over and they went on to dominate but Mostly Novak. When Nadal and Novak left their prime in 2016-2018ish, Nobody was there to take over and now they have about 20 slams between themselves that they won from 2016-2022 lol. This generation will be good and fun to watch but no one from this gen currently has any shot at becoming an all timer especially when 2 guys in their mid 30's are taking all their Grand slams

Nice post 👍🏻 The only one I can think of , but , shoulda , woulda , coulda ! is Nick Kyrgios . He is head and shoulders above the rest in talent and beat the top 3 when he was much younger , when it really mattered Wimbledon 2022 men's final and despite his best efforts he couldn't quite get there . Such a shame , I really like him .

Totally spot on, it was crazy that Novak came back in 2018 and started dominating the sport again...that absurd, i also think that Novak/Nadal benefited from the injuries to Del Porto who would have been such a threat to them post 2010, Roger never had that luxury or previous champions..These players are not good enough..Medvedev giving up a two set lead and a triple break point chance in the third set against nadal at Aus Open just about summed it up I'm afraid..

Thanks. Here in May 2023, the one-word answer seems to be, "Alcaraz!" He turned 20 4 days ago (May 5th). He won a grand slam & reached #1 at 19 (2022 US Open). Now Fed's retired, Rafa's a question mark, and Murray & Wawrinka [the "Other Two"] seem past their prime. That only leaves Novak. Carlos is poised to be the next tennis god. tavi.

They keep it up they will! I think these guys do not have their heads wrapped around the five-set format still, affecting their belief. If you cannot defeat the "legends" in best if three, how can you do it in five? It will be the generation behind them, as witnessed in the 2022 US Open. I would not throw Thiem in the "Lost Generation" category. Those guys are 30 and over. And he does havd a slam.

The problem isn't in their heads...it isn't mental at all! The problem is in their broken techniques! You cannot hope to dominate the game, when you hit your backhand like a drunk duck, or when you return on par with some amateur hitting in his backyard! Serve technique is broken, backahnds are broken, return game for the most part is non-existent (with the exception of maybe Medvedev...) and it all has to do with how they were taught to play tennis as kids! Majority of those problems cannot be fixed overnight if at all! Most of them have to change their technique drastically to have any real success, starting from scratch! Yeah right...good luck with that! Lol

Interesting to revisit this later on. I think we're now at the point where Nadal is on his way out, Djokovic is still the best in the world, but he's 35 and has to slow down at some point. Next Gen of Tsitsipas, Medvedev, Zverev and Rublev are just a series of good players, kind of like Federer's gen of Hewitt, Agassi and Safin. I believe Medvedev will get 3/4 hard court majors, Tsitsipas will pick up 2/3 majors, surely Zverev will at some point, unsure on Rublev. They will be passed by Alcaraz, having been held up in their youngest days by Nadal, Djokovic and even old man Federer.

Daniil already several times beat Nole. Even Tsisipas & Alcaraz also already beat Nadal & Nole. I think they are all ready to blow up soon. It's normal that some olds will go then younger ones will come. since last year we can see them well on different typical surfaces. Tsisipas is best on AO, wimbleodon & RG. Alcaraz & Ruud are best on RG. Zverev is best on AO, RG, USO. Sinner on AO & RG. Matteo is best on wimbledon. Daniill is best on AO & USO. Felix on RG & USO. Welcome new gens

Lmao aged like milk as many other predictions regarding Djokovic and Nadal...but especially Djokovic! When will you people finally realize, that nothing is stopping these two from trying to win slam race! They will win as many more grand slams as they want and some lazy social media next gen kids are not gonna spoil their party! They themselves will decide, when it's enough! Once again especially Djokovic! Once this guy is at 25-27 slams maybe he will be kind enough and let some of these next gen kids win some...meanwhile he will be busy winning slams left and right...
