Dude. I’ve been watching these guys for 40 years. I’ve known for this long that they are the GOAT. On and off the stage they carry themselves with class. Three virtuosos in one band….only three of them! Sound like 6. RIP Neil. Miss you.

So have I, my first show was Grace under pressure in 84, which is the album from which this particular song is from. These 3 guys blow 4 &5 piece bands out of the water , with their sound and musicianship. Greatest rock trio in the history of music.

I gotta a say. I’ve always realized that these guys were under appreciated in the music world for years. I always defended them when criticism was cast upon them. I’m an underdog guy. Their humility was always intriguing to me. To answer your question I was hopeful that people would see their value in the industry. I believe people today are amazed even more of their musicianship, especially in this digital age. These guys created technology for a band. This was a band that surrounded themselves with good people also which you need to be successful. As Dave G. said …no hype, no bullshit….built the band the right way. These guys said their goodbyes and went out on top. Blueprint for a band. What a career. Who could not respect that. Fan or not.

Alex is what I would consider a complete guitarist. While there are many technically amazing guitarists out there, most don't have the depth of sound that he produces. If you listen from album to album, the amount of innovation with guitar tone is insane. Most guitarists struggle to get the tone they like. Alex says "I'll take all the tones, please and thank you."

This really is probably my favorite RUSH album 😍 Love it from start to finish, the artwork, the darkness of it. Everything! Cannot wait for the 40th anniversary drops! Fun fact- All though this song mentions the word "wheels" quite a bit, Geddy never actually says the song title "Between the Wheels". In fact only two songs on GUP mentions the song title in the song- "Kid Gloves and Enemy Within" 😉

One memory I have from Rush was watching them at the R30 Tour in Las Vegas. They were at the top of their game. I stood for the entire concert. At the end, we made our way into the MGM Casino with thousands of other fans. The crowd was quiet but tension was building. My exwife said, shits going down! You could feel it in the air. Somebody yelled "Rush" and then everybody began chanting "Rush". The gamblers were very confused.

The lyrics though.... soooo goood! Show me another Rock band that wrote a song referencing the 1910's - 1930's - "Lost Generation", "Dustbowl", "Brother Can You Spare?". Their albums were mostly all themed. This one highlighted wars and battles, from internal conflict, to futuristic ones, to WWI, to the Cold War.

I've been a huge Rush fan since '88 when I was in 7th grade and thankfully I've been able to see them live every tour since that time. Obviously, I like all of their music but when I saw this first performed live during the Vapor Trails tour, it just became one of my favorite songs by them. I wish they could have recorded all of their songs live because sometimes those old 80's recording just don't match the power of the same song live. But these videos due and like I said, I was just blown away by this song again by seeing it live.

I was born in August of 68' when they formed, my dad's name was Lee Gaddy and my mother shared the same name as Geddy Lees wife (Nancy). I didn't realize that till about ten years after I bought my first Rush vinyl records! I knew all the lyrics to every song and pretty much still do. Every time I see them live ..... I get chills up my spine, because I remember how I felt when I saw them live. I saw about 150 concerts in my life but Rush was far better than anyone. I'm talking led Zeppelin Pink Floyd , Boston, Ozzy, Tool, Yes, Aerosmith, Metallica, etc. They will never be touched as the greatest 3-piece rock band that ever was assembled !!!!!

This has always been one of my favorite Rush songs. "To live between the wars in our time" encapsulated everything I feared for in 1984. Powerful stuff

So the washing machines are there because Geddy Lee plugs into the house system so he does not require amps. Alex chooses to run through amps so he has a stack of them behind him. Geddy said this left his side empty and the stage out of proportion, so he put washing machines behind him. In later tours he replaced them with a big carnival popcorn machine that actually popped behind him, vending machines, and a rotisserie chicken roaster, and a sausage maker.Just fun stuff.

Believe it or not, there are Rush "fans" who cannot stand the songs where they use a lot of synthesizers and think that the album that produced this song is garbage. This song managed to make it in the majority of their tours since R30 (2005?)... It's always great to see live, for sure. The wheels cogs turn from the stage and along the sides and ceiling. Spectacular visually for sure. Their stages and their lights shows were always amazing, but still second to their performances. I was lucky to see them 12 times between R30 and R40 .... Geddy may have missed a note now and then, but he never sounded pitchy, and I live in the desert where it's dry. He has taken pretty good care of his voice..... there are just some songs they would not play. Temples of Syrinx from 2112 was a tough one, and I think he sang their parts in a lower octave. In either case, they still always sounded amazing... This is definitely one of my faves. I seriously tear up during the chorus every time I listen to it. Darn them for making me cry. Lol

Definitely one of Alex's top 10, if not top 5 solos. The studio version is at a slightly faster tempo, and while the song is still great, it comes across as harsher (the whole album really). Of all of the guitarists I've heard live, Alex brings the goods when it comes to replicating and even enhancing what was originally recorded. Maybe better than anyone else. Geddy' was in his live vocal prime on this song in '04. Between the band's return in '01 and Snakes & Arrows in '07, he used all of his accumulated experience and his range cooperated. Not a struggle to sing the old stuff as originally recorded and able to add nuance . But in '11 during The Time Machine Tour, father-time caught up. The last 3 tours had some rough moments vocally, but the musicianship was better than ever. Knowing how honest Geddy is, I bet if you ask him about these tours he'd admit the struggles. The perfectionist he is.

Besides washing machines, during Rush's Time Machine tour in which that my friends and I went to in Oct of 2010, Geddy Lee had big rotisserie cookers cooking chickens. As Rush plays their songs, chef walks by to check on the chickens. Then cooked chickens are served to the crew after concert ends at each stop.

Then you can have a better perspective of there songs , there are a few more live shows out there on video, 1979 Pink Pop festival, the return afterNeils absence Hartford Con. Y'all really need to check out "Lock and Key" from the Hold Your Fire album. There's a video for it and Neil Peart absolutely goes off for the last minute or so of the song. It's the best I've ever heard from him outside of his solos. Please, please, please give it a listen. You'll be glad you did.

Do “the analog kid” live and listen for a choral synth part during the guitar solo, at the same time watch geddys foot.

I'm surprised you haven't done La Villa Strangiato yet. I would recommend the R30 - Rush 30th Anniversary Tour where they play La Villa Strangiato/By-Tor and the Snow-Dog where Alex is being extra goofy.

As a rush fan to me this song may reference 1910's to 1930's but it references to me being between 2 different people and you have no control over the situation and the music desbribes the feeling perfectly with no decision made in the end- still caught in the middle.
