I just got done using this tool on 29 doors. Not a single issue whatsoever. It does seem to get scractches on the bore guide, but in no way impeeds making the perfect hole. Best investment I've made yet. You *do* want to try *not* to go all the way through. It may leave splinters on the other side. Use the pilot hole to finish off the back side to avoid that.

I'm a DIY homeowner and I've used this tool on an interior bedroom door. It works good. As a plastic tool (to keep the price low), it's not made for the pro's that are doing many doors. For the DIYer, that's going to do a door once in a while, it'll help you do the job. I hadn't used it in a while and I'm about to replace a bathroom and two bedroom hollow core doors and thought I'd watch a few videos to refresh my memory how to use it. Tip: use the old doors to line up the new doors for hinge and knob placements. I'll also be using the Ryobi hinge template and striker templates. BTW, thanks for the video!

Back in the 70s on summer vacation we boys would go with the family (finish carpenters) to learn and help mostly base boards for the kids with good backs. But I remember the grown ups had nice metal jigs, I guess the plastic is for the home owner a few uses and cheap materials where the others professional way more money is ...... way more money.

You never want to cut straight through. Reason is it make a nice clean hole coming from Both sides. You can ruin the door surface by punching only from one side.

For the metal doors I tried the a few cheapo kits. The $20 masterforce set template is more solid tool but the hole saw not carbide. In a week I broke 3 pilot bits. Most residential metal doors dont have wood blocks or theres only partial blocks. Sucks because the 1/4 bit has no solid hold and suddenly takes off and breaks the bit ripping a GOUGE. So i had to reverse the drill. Useing half inch drill with side handel. Any help please.

How to install a duro lock
@peterbarlow8912
@peterbarlow8912 10 ай бұрын
It’s flimsy compared to the all metal jig the local hardware store used to lend us. I added a clamp to the operation. The elongation of the mounting holes will be a problem as it can put slightly off center screw holes right close to where the backset holes belong. Keep your pilot bits short until your well into the door. My locks required the backset bore to go beyond and that spade bit was scary wild in the coarse particle board core. So I did the backset hole first and chased it beyond the big hole with a long 1/4” bit to help keep the spade bit inline. I also made a clamp on wooden jig with 2 fences at right angles to keep the deep 1” hole straight.

Now the center hole was off. Yikes. I tryed a new bit and it wobbled so i did reverse worked slowly and i got threw both sides ok. i think if there was a wood backer block it would have held the bit better. Any thoughts. Thanks for the great video. 👍

If you go very slow at first, you should be able to cut the hole without the pilot bit. As for it breaking off in the first place, it should not have done that. I have the Milwaukee kit also and never had that issue with it. Only thing I can think of is maybe the bit got too hot on the metal door and snapped. Maybe use some lubricant next time

+sunshine always powers wow, you are right, not to many vids for the jamb install. All I do is install the hinges on the door first. I then bring the door over to the jamb, and place two small 1/4" pieces of wood under the door to ensure I have a gap for the door to swing without dragging on the floir. Then just trace out the hinges on the jamb. Use the router to clear out the traced area (needs to be 1/8" deep). That's the easiest way to explain it without getting into measurements. Maybe I will post a vid on this soon

Do you have to use the drill bit to guide the circle bit thru the door? Or, is the clamp circle enough to guide the bit through the door itself? I ask this because I am replacing the doorknobs on my very old doors, and there is already a smaller hole through the middle of what I need cut. The size of the hole is currently too small for the new doorknob size. Since there is a smaller hole, there is nothing for the smaller bit to guide the larger bit thru the door. The doors are not solid. Do you think the clamp you put on the door is strong enough to use the larger bit without the help of the guide bit?

You may need to put it in a vice. If not, use a screwdriver and put it in the slot and crank

You didn't even show to use the strike plate installer on the actual kit.

why didn't you show how the strike plate locator works. If you are showing people how a tool, just bought, is supposed to work, all the way through the job. And your not even attempting to use it for those who did not know that they ''oh i shoulda bought the tool too" thanks a lot work snob...why review it if your just gonna whine the obvious inadequacies as if no one knows what they are as soon as they pick up the package. You left out a pretty important part of the ''review', such is was.
