Today's vlog: after hopping along the coast of Sudan, it's time to really set off to Djibouti on a 7 day trip! Today you join us on day 4 of this passage :)
The first 3 days have been heavy, with very hot and humid weather, and engine problem and windless periods. Today we enjoy a good day of sailing.
Yess we are doing a GIVEAWAY!!
Win a full week on board of Messenger for 2 persons. check the details in/under DailyVlog 25
This journey is only a small part of our trip that started 2 years ago. We got the sailing- skills on our friends yacht 'Shalom' when we joined them on a trip from the Netherlands to Spain. / @sailingshalom . In Spain we decided to go with our own boat, and in no time we were the happy owners of 'Messenger'. We left may 2018 and started vlogging from the beginning, we made 15 minute video's of our adventures, the nature and the many special people we met. We cooperated with OM to visit their projects and film them on our way. Since 19 of March we started with a daily vlog due to the corona situation. We plan to keep doing this the coming months.

Hey Howard! Thanks for responding, glad you enjoy the video's! We made a lot of videos from Egypt as well, from hurghada all the way to the border with Sudan. (we posted them as dayvlogs some time ago) so maybe it's interesting to watch for you as well! Wow, that's going to be a big trip! Great plans! We are heading to Maldives, we think as an end station and maybe turn around there... Not sure yet

Very nice video, good work. I am really interested about Djibouti and what comes up there. Esp. how they treat sailors and how free you can sail short part of the coast and what you guys say when it comes to safety. Safe travels you two!!
@sailingmessenger8125

Hey Philipp! We will show you some of the life in Djibouti next week. About short trips along the coast we have to figure out still. Before we entered the harbour no one seemed to be bothered, no officials came and it seems very relaxed. So we think that when you just want to sail along the coast and anchor you could do so. During July and August the Khamsin is blowing, a west wind that blows around 20 to 30 knots and is dusty. In the evening and at night the wind turns everywhere. It makes the anchorages on the tadjoura gulf not very pleasant. So we will await a good moment to do daytrips in the gulf. The coastguard here can be time consuming, when they have something to say about you (because you stay at the port) they want you to aks permission for stupid things. In general things aren't organised very well for sailors, everything takes a lot of time and there seem not to be a fixed way of doing things. We waited 1 week to get checked in...

Hi guys - a question about internet in the Red Sea: how much of the time have you had connectivity? Where did you get your Sim card(s) and what's the coverage/speed like?
@sailingmessenger8125
@sailingmessenger8125 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Phil, When sailing, anchoring close to shore (within 10 miles approximately) there was good connection in Egypt. We got our simcard in Port Said. Normally it's 3G or 4G. Perfectly fine. To upload videos of 1 GB it takes about 15-30 minutes. Per In sudan we did not have a simcard because we could not enter the country. We know for sure that in South Sudan the connectivity was very bad, that's what locals told us. In North Sudan it could be better. Eritrea we passed on the open sea. But we heard from other sailors that internet isn't readily available everywhere. But we did not check for ourselves. Djibouti has very slow 'cable-internet' but really good 3G or 4G mobile internet so far. Same speed and quality as in Egypt. We haven't gone out of the capital of Djibouti yet.

It took us around 8 days. We heard from a Turkish sailboat that disappeared there during Covid lockdown. But afterwards we heated they were just in quarantaine and the government took very good care of them. But at the time of the video we did not know what happened so we did not dare to stop 😊. Sorry, we would have loved to explore your country!

Did you need permission from any authorities to make that segment of the trip? Did you contact any of the Navy ships enroute? I read several years ago that sailing vessels were requested to contact the joint anti piracy naval contingent in Djibouti before sailing past Somalia. Is that still the case?
@sailingmessenger8125
@sailingmessenger8125 4 жыл бұрын
For the part we sailed now, you don't need registration or permission, to sail further past Somalia, where the higher risk zone is, there is the following advice:
@sailingmessenger8125

I tried to add a picture of the red sea passage supplement, but it did not work. It sais yachts are advices to register at mschoa, with postmaster@mschoa.org with title:yacht vessel movement. There are more advices and requirements written in the red sea pilot (and the supplement has the most up to date info) I think you can download the supplement of the rccpf website
