Today's vlog: We sail on the gulf of Suez, in the red sea and get our fishing line in the propellor. This happens in a gale during the night wich doesn't make it any better. We can't use the engine to anchor somewhere to solve it, and we can't reef the sails... so what do you do then?
Yess we are doing a GIVEAWAY!!
Win a full week on board of Messenger for 2 persons. check the details in/under DailyVlog 25
In November 2020 we arrived with our sailboat in Haifa, Israel. To save some money we stayed at the same marina for 3 months and traveld trough the country over land. Hiking, hitchhiking, by rental car and public transport. It was a great experience!!
This journey is only a small part of our trip that started 2 years ago. We got the sailing- skills on our friends yacht 'Shalom' when we joined them on a trip from the Netherlands to Spain. / @sailingshalom . In Spain we decided to go with our own boat, and in no time we were the happy owners of 'Messenger'. We left may 2018 and started vlogging from the beginning, we made 15 minute video's of our adventures, the nature and the many special people we met. We cooperated with OM to visit their projects and film them on our way. Since 19 of March we started with a daily vlog due to the corona situation. We plan to keep doing this the coming months.

Hi Matthew, Thanks for you respons and interest. Are you planing to come this way too? maybe you found out already, but we have been in the red sea for a while by now. At the moment corona started we decided to do daily vlogs, that took so much time so the ones from the suez canal and gulf of suez which weren't published yet at that time and had to wait. Last 3 weeks we had a long trip from Egypt to Djibouti in which we had no connection, so we planed these "older" videos now. We are in Djibouti at the moment. here you can see our track: www.noforeignland.com/boat/5925410334310400?sid=4827421138223104&tc=1595243351400 we posted 58 video's about sailing, surviving on anchor, snorkelling, diving, dancing with dolphins ets :) all from Egyptian waters, so you can still watch them here: kzfaq.info/sun/PL3kBi89EVQhh2meT1LB1TIWXSQvSZl0ZI Hermen en Marjolein

Thanks for sharing, was a good reminder about tailing hazards, just want to mention it is ok to reef without a motor as you mentioned (u drive the boat with the headsail), and where possible good practice pure sailing into anchorages even marinas for these occasions.
@sailingmessenger8125
@sailingmessenger8125 4 жыл бұрын
you're welcome :) Yea, you are right, it must be possible to sail like 50 degrees to the wind or something on the genua right, and then loosen the mainsail an do the change.. but our reef system is a bit old fashioned so it takes some time, so it would still have been a very difficult operation with these steep waves i guess. Yea sure, we never tried to sail into a marina, but we did sail into quite some anchorages. but never with these conditions :) It was also the first time we saw a reef, haha so did not know very well how that worked, how good you could see it and what it would do with the seas. But luckily it went all very well :) Thanks for your response!

Verder het probleem goed opgelost lijkt me zo.
@sailingmessenger8125
@sailingmessenger8125 4 жыл бұрын
Hey! Leren is altijd goed :)
@airgead5391
@airgead5391 4 жыл бұрын
Fair winds!
@sailingmessenger8125
@sailingmessenger8125 4 жыл бұрын
Gaan we proberen Thanks!

Eehm we had to judge the situation from the outside, when it looked to difficult we had to turn back before entering. The bay was bigger then we thought so we had quite some room to drift downwind and throw the anchor when the wind would drop completely. Eehn we learned not to leave the fishing line behind the boat in the night or in heavy circumstances 😁 and also gained some experience In how to sail without having the backup of an engine

Hi Mikis! A lot of people have the idea that the entire red sea is full of pirates. 🙂 But gladly it is only concentrated on a specific area between Yemen en Somalia, outside the red sea in the gulf of Aden. There is an area we're there have been often pirate attacks, but not that much on sailors though. Nowadays navy ships and planes are patrolling the area and no sailor has been harmed or attacked by pirates the last years. Some have seen some strange behavior of little boats that could be pirates, and maybe some have had encounters with pirates but no serious problems.

Looks like you had some tough sailing, glad to see you have handled the situation. The sea seems pretty high. You said you couldn't reef the sails because you couldn't use the motor - couldn't you head upwind, sheet the mainsail all the way out and reef it or even take it down and stay just with the headsail and mizen?
@sailingmessenger8125
@sailingmessenger8125 4 жыл бұрын
Yea I think we could have done that. We thought it wouldn't be doable, but I guess it was a possibility. But it would have been very difficult with these waves and strong wind, during the night to do that I guess. Would you think it was safe to do that?

@sailingmessenger8125
@sailingmessenger8125 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, the boat can tilt quite a bit indeed. But there is 3000 kg weight build in the keel, so it is almost impossible to flip over. So after a while you know what the boat can handle, so you can be a bit more relaxed. Although is is always more intens to sail with strong wind, because you are more focused that everything goes well in the end:) glad you like our videos! Thanks!
