I enjoyed this film. The redemption arc is becoming a sub-genre in the superhero category. If this were Blockbuster video, the tape would be right next to Hancock. I picked up on the twist in the opening scene. As soon as I heard twin, I knew that Joe was Nemesis. There were plenty of clues pointing out that Joe was not Samaritan throughout the film. When the kid called him Samaritan, Joe said he was not him and often got angry, also when the kid said that Samaritan saved his dad, Joe had no memory of this because it was not him. The hammer scenes also were another clue. Joe seemed to have a psychic bond whenever the hammer was being used. The acting was not great overall, but the kid managed to sell the story. If there is a sequel, then I would definitely watch it because there are still more unanswered questions about Joe that I would like to see fleshed out.

It had layers like Shrek, that's for sure. When he tells Cyrus he's the "bad guy", yeah, he's letting the dude know he was Nemesis. But Nemesis held himself as the "anti-" hero right up until that final confrontation with his brother. His failure to save his brother made him feel like the villain and caused him to truly consider himself the Bad Guy. It was saving Sam that finally gave him a sense of closure. I'm actually very glad that Cyrus was a follower of the misconceptions about Nemesis instead of some blood relation. Had Cryus actually been family, Joe probably would have stayed in there until his heat-prone system gave out on him.

To be honest, the only thing which is really annoying is, that it is one movie (it creates basically a universe - and it just ends, keeping you to see more). I actually prefer, that Sam and Joe are not related. It is just how things work out in reality. Also: it is great to see, that even a superhero has limits and has some weaknesses. The super hero genre have normally heroes and their nemesis far too overpowered. So yes- dope show.

Joe and Cyrus related....not Joe and Sam... at 7:18 ... I mean it still could be if they made another one, because Cyrus acts very shaken by it. It might also explain how Cyrus was able to at least stand up to Joe some.

I enjoyed it. In terms of alt endings I think having the villain redeemed in the end, rather than be killed, would have been nice. The villain wasn't entirely set up to be a BBEG. His motivations for his actions are centered around feelings of injustice and grief. His crew were also people who had been abandoned or victimized based on one of the crew member's words. Like a younger Nemesis their actions were spurred by the failings occurring in the city. Failings that may have been caused, or at least furthered by, Nemesis's old conflicts with the city and his brother. Nemesis would be able to recognize a lot of what they had gone through. He lost loved ones due to others, he wanted to make those people hurt, and he wanted to provide what he saw as justice to those like him. However he also knows where that path ultimately leads and that he was wrong about some things. Things he learned too late and at the cost of his brother. Having Nemesis explain that, while also empathizing with them, and getting the villain to abandon his own plan/rage in response would have been an amazing callback for me. In this way he would have saved the villain in the same way his brother saved him.

I liked the movie. It was entertaining. There was a simple but brutal-ness to the action scenes that as refreshing. I thought the twist was a little to easy to predict but most comic/superhero stories are so everyone will have their own pinion on that. I would recommend a watch if you like the genre. Does a good job not over explaining every single thing. Here is the world and these are the people that exist in it.

This was a fun movie just to have fun with it. I thought of a different idea in that Samaritan was actually Sam's mother's father, and he, after losing his brother, stayed around to watch over his brothers' daughter and grandson with a new ending of Sam finding out he also has the powers transferred to him, and Joe stays around to have Sam grow up to be the new Samaritan. But the idea of Cyrus as Joe's son would have added much to the movie, But all in all, it's just a fun superhero movie and very enjoyable.

Like many others, I also figured out the twist during the early scenes. I hoped it wouldn't be so obvious, that they'd do a twist on a twist, like that he actually IS Samaritan, but pretends to be Nemesis, because Samaritan was the actual villain many years ago, and his popular public persona was his way to win over Nemesis and accomplish his nefarious plan.. Or that Samaritan and Nemesis were actually the same person, with multiple personality disorder, which is why they were not really seen at the same time - until that fateful night many years ago, when they joined and fused together. Or something better, I am sure there are many such ideas. But oh well. Pretty obvious but still sufficiently enjoyable. :)

It had the gritty feel of a comic film from yesteryear and felt like it was in its own world as opposed to the current status quo genre it’s become where everything feels realistic. I liked the tone here and the crazy looks for some of the bad guys. This was to me what Dick Tracy was for it’s genre. Just a fun world for us to explore and not question the logistics. Btw hilarious adding the “everybody can change”. That legit made me laugh out loud.

I liked how Sam and Cyrus weren't related to Samaritan or Nemesis. They just admired the parts in them that were similar, or at least thought were. tbh i think the build up to the twist wasn't good enough and they definitely should have made it clear that Cyrus was trying to finish what he saw as nemesis final plan along. Also the finales pacing didn't really work for me, I think that it would have worked better if Joe didn't instantly get the hammer to fight the goons and should have made him visibly steaming more and more to make it seem more like a struggle as he tried to get to the kid with the reveal happening that Joe isn't Samaritan when he is fighting on the top floor when Joe takes the hammer from Cyrus.

The minute they said they were Twins in the first few minutes of the movie, they telegraphed their twist, along with the intentional avoidance of the topic by the main character Joe. I would have enjoyed it 10x more if they had just said brothers and then you find out they weren't just brothers but twins later in the story. I also would have loved it if the lore had left out the whole Sauron take of forging a weapon and pouring his malice into it... they are essentially mutants, they only had physical abilities... that kept it grounded in a reality that you could reasonably suspend your disbelief... but when you start talking about forging a hammer and putting his blood giving the hammer supernatural powers... you've now blown past it for no reason. The whole movie would have still worked without the whole hammer being 'special'. I know they somehow needed a way to try to even out a normal human vs a superhuman conflict at the end, but I figured he was getting weaker the more his heart was racing, they didn't need the hammer to be magical. It worked for Lord of the Rings because they whole thing takes place in a world where magic, otherworldly things exist and not in our current known reality. If those two things would have changed, I would have found it more entertaining. It took a bit to get into it, but then I found it enjoyable until the hammer came back into play and was just waiting for the twist to be revealed. The only part I really laughed at was when Cyrus talked to the kid about Nemesis, and pulled his shirt back to reveal his Nemesis tattoo on his chest... did he forget about the Nemesis tattoo on his face?? Mildly entertaining and mindless fun. Probably won't watch it again.

I loved the plot twist, I wasn't expecting that. The movie had flaws storywise, like what happen to the Samaritan's body once the fire was put out? Did forensics or the police recover the body? Why didn't anyone recognize Joe when he was staring at the kid? He was caught on video flipping a car and using it as a barrier.

It's an old tale and in real life as well, when it's hard to forgive sin and yourself you have remorse to the things you've done and try to fix things, but cannot escape the past. Only by trying to do good and redeem yourself is the key the problem is acceptance and did the person really changed? As seen in this movie Nemesis was really heart broken when he lost his brother not by his hand in battle by an accident where he tired to do good to save him because he was spared which haunted him, now he transitions from villain to anti hero to hero in the course of the movie. It was a great watch.

Honestly, I enjoyed it. I had an idea early on that possibly he was Nemesis, but I wasn't sure. The more that you see him restraining and holding back the anger, it was clear and by time of the reveal I was so hoping it WAS the case and it turned out to be. I think if he was Samaritan, it just would have been a let down. I am glad it went the way it did. It had flaws, as most stuff does; but it was decent overall. I may watch it again sometime, something I rarely do with modern movies anymore.

During the making of Christopher Reeves Superman, Stallone was one the guys who eagerly want to land the role of Superman. Now Sly has his chance to play a superhero.

I fully expected him to be Nemesis because he reacted to Cyrus picking up his hammer at the police storage in the beggining of the movie, he ran away from the city chaos and he really disliked helping people.

I loved that movie, the final twist, oufffff breath taking. And for Stallone, he's slow, a little bit bigger around the belly, but it fit with the personnage, I,m just surprise that for a super power of regeneration like his, he's not like wolfverine, keep it younger, but well, that's okay. The story is good. I will watch it again anytime.

It's worthy of a 1 time watch. Saw this on the plane recently. The ending did throw me off even though I had a feeling of it but yea, that way of a twist you mentioned would have definitely been great.

I really enjoyed the movie. Glad I gave it a chance! The only thing I was left longing for was more Samaritan/Nemesis background lore, like what specifically they fought over and what led up to their epic fight at the power plant. Just an overall better sense and understanding of what was behind everything. Like I still don’t get what exactly happened there that night..

I feel like they didn’t need to be twins for the twist to have worked. I mean their faces were never shown to us when they were Samaritan and Nemesis and they did have masks so it’s feasible to assume the public never saw them.
@katherinestives940

I might be wrong, but in the (very) brief instant before Samaritan fell you did get to see his face, and it didn't look like Stallone's face to me. Which, again to me, implied that they weren't identical twins. For some reason when the word "twins" is used people always assume identical, but fraternal twins are a thing too. And, from what I understand, fraternal twins are more common as well.

I think a lot of people missed the point of Samaritan. It's a parable about hate, and what happens if someone lets it rule them. That's why the ending of Cyrus & the hammer was poetic.

I enjoyed it. Although the 1st 30 second of it told me what was going to happen. Knowing that, I still enjoyed it. My one regret is that there wasnt an end credits scene where Joe actually dons his brothers suit and goes out to make amends. THAT would have been cool. In any event, I'd love to see a sequel. I liked the premise.

I liked the movie, but I agree with you. The villain should of had a more person stake in all this. Being nemesis son would of been awesome. But then nemesis wouldn’t have been able to kill him, they would of had to do something else. Still would of been a good twist.

I've been meaning to watch this movie and kept passing over it. I figured the plot was simple and obvious, so watching this review helped me answer the question, what was this movie about. I agree with ThinkStory as to the plot twist that should have been written in but Hollywood is in the cash grab phase, not tell a compelling story phase. And it also seemed that the movie dragged on longer than it should. It looks like one of those straight to video movies that you would watch on local TV during a rain storm. It had potential but it didn't go deep enough. In fact, it felt like the original Robocop movie. Good plot but not enough depth. Thanks for the review!!!
