With SAW X right around the corner, hitting theatres this September, I figured it was time I revisit all 9 SAW movies and review them over the coming weeks in anticipation. SAW is very special to me, it has a very special place in my heart, without SAW I probably wouldn't be here talking movies on KZfaq with all of you. So lets continue from where we left off with SAW V (2008), 15 Years Later!
#Saw #SawX #Jigsaw #johnkramer
Despite the fact that fiendish serial killer Jigsaw is dead, his work lives on through a new apprentice, Lieutenant Mark Hoffman, a cop who appeared to be hot on the murderer's trail. As fellow lawman Agent Peter Strahm begins to suspect Hoffman is Jigsaw's protégé, the fledgling killer sets out to dispose of him.

I always found five slightly forgettable not boring but I just forgot what happened in the movie, but after re-watching it recently I found it quite good and actually really enjoyed the vast back story it provides. Six will always be my favourite saw movie, great story, great traps and a consistent pace.

Might be an unpopular opinion, but V is definitely my favourite of the series! I love how it feels like a thriller, with Hoffman and Strahm's story lines running parallel until they inevitably meet. I love both characters, and I truly wish we had gotten more of their dynamic/cat-and-mouse game!

I agree, and since Hoffman’s my favorite character, the epic chess match between him and Strahm, a cool group game that is similar to the one from Saw 2, yet also quite different, and this one being Hoffman’s origin story? Gotta give this one the top spot, Saw 6 in close second.

Saw V has always been my favorite! I'm so glad you've come around and like it more now. You mentioned there wasn't really any difference between the "unrated versions" and the "theatrical versions", well there is also a "Directors Cut" edition and there was at least one new scene that I wish they kept in all versions and that was Seth's death. Basically, in his final breath, he notices Hoffman watching him and says to him "I did what I was supposed to". Something about that to me was so haunting and sad, and I feel it added to why Hoffman still seemed bothered by killing him, like it haunted him.

Yes! I've been a fan from the begining, n the story continuing in recent years is a dream come true! I was sad at "the final chapter" being in a title. Thankfuly they changed their mind! There is endless potential!

I feel like David Hackl is one of the most underrated names when it comes to Saw. He's been with the series since Saw 2 and he's really one of the key people responsible for helping develop the trademark design and aesthetic of the Saw franchise. I place him up there with Bousman, Wan, Whannell, Greutert, etc. as one of the people who made Saw as memorable and great as it was.

I think that Saw V is better than Saw IV. Its story and style are more "focused" and it has a more natural flow. Though it's not an incredible plot-twist, the fact that the players were supposed to help each other to survive and win the game together is a cool and refreshing aspect. The opening scene is super memorable and effective: The Pendulum Trap is probably one of the best in the Saw franchise.

Totally with you on the fact that the traps in V are slower and give people time. It's something that I think kinda got lost along the way with this series. A big part of why the first movie works is that we get to spend a decent amount of time in the scenario, but if it's just a few minutes, there's just not as much of a psychological impact. Like, imagine the Pound of Flesh trap in Saw VI if they'd had a full hour to do it.

Actually everyone in the Fatal Five trap that died, died almost instantly. Decapitation, blowed up, stabbed in the neck. The only ones who actually suffered were the two survivors.

Saw V is my personal favorite Saw film. There’s lots of reasons… 1) Hoffman is my favorite character, and this one is his origin story. Seeing how he is fit right into the earlier films might seem weird, but yet… it still works since a lot was left out. 2) The chess match between Hoffman and Strahm is always a blast to watch. Strahm being the badass that made history by being the first to beat an unwinnable trap (which is one of my favorite traps in the series primarily for how Strahm beat it), and Hoffman being a badass in showing his own cunning and using it to outsmart Strahm at the end. This forshadows the more impressive feats he would pull off in later films. 3) The main game is both similiar to Saw 2’s game, yet different. The idea that every trap was designed so they all could easily have lived and to do so required them to work together was refreshing, felt different enough to not feel like it was copying Saw 2. Also, the victims, while selfish, did actually try thinking before acting in the traps, unlike with most of the main games. 4) This was the one that made Jill’s role mysterious, it really called into question what side she was on, especially after Saw 4’s events. 5) John Kramer’s story continues to be expanded and he has a really good line that Hoffman pays off when he outsmarts Strahm, “If you’re good at anticipating the human mind, it leaves nothing to chance.” 6) All of the previous reasons to me make this one of the most rewatchable films of the series. In fact, toning down the gore (other than the Pendulum Trap, the rest of the traps aren’t as graphic) after Saws 3 and 4 helps it act like a breather episode (on top of slowing the overall story a bit to catch up on the backstory) before the next two films up the brutality by quite a bit. So yeah, I know this is a very unpopular opinion, but for my tastes, this one takes the cake. P. S. Patrick, the journalist guy is named Charles. Mallick literally reveals his name after he and Brit figure out that all the traps could have been beaten so they’d all survive.

Unpopular Opinion: Saw V has one of the best trap plots in the series! Everyone in it was a selfish person, but not evil enough that you didn’t want to see them survive it! The twist at the end is what solidified it for me, they were all supposed to survive and only suffer a little! That twist alone was what solidified Saw V for me as a great horror sequel! I don’t enjoy the cop plot as much as I did in Saw, Saw 4, and Spiral. It feels a little ridiculous, but the trap plot alone solidified it for me.

Strahm talking to himself is a Shakespearean tool in filmmaking. When a character is on stage alone they will talk to themselves so the audience knows what the hell is going on. In Saw V, he probably isn't really speaking out loud, he may be acting out his thoughts for the benefit of the audience. I don't think it's over the top. He's working alone and has nobody else to discuss things with. If he doesn't talk to himself in those scenes, we don't get those scenes and it doesn't lay out the story for the audience.

I always sorta liked how the primary trap gauntlet in this did a slight spin from "survival of the fittest" to (poorly) making everyone have to work along each other without realizing they had to Made the end really interesting but maaaaan was the ball spiked on this one. Usually John likes his riddles but at least you can sorta discern what he means if you listen enough In this he didnt really do that. Brings it down a bit for me but overall, i didnt mind it too much

I've slightly come around on Saw V over the years from a production standpoint. Hackl takes his time with the pacing and direction compared to Bousman's quicker direction of Saw II-IV (much as I enjoy III). Plus, Hoffman's first meeting with Jigsaw was a great face-off. Like you said, Saw V still doesn't rank high for me, but there are major elements I enjoy.

As much as it was such a brutal and I dare say fun way to end the chase between Hoffman and Strahm, having him die in the Glass Coffin felt incredibly frustrating because he survived the Water Cube. Granted it was by chance he had a pen on him but to then act on impulse after seeing how far impulse gets you in games and not figure out how to best proceed was just a kick in gut.

The whole "unrated edition" stuff is just American jargon. In the U.S. unlike other countries, the movie rating system is voluntary. The only reason most movies get certified, is because theater chains only carry certain content. The "unrated" version is literally just an extended version, that they just didnt bother sending in for re-rating because it was already on home release. Its used for marketing, not content warning

I honestly was always upset about Strahm’s death in 5,, I would’ve loved to have seen him in 6. It felt like such a punch to the gut when he died after surviving the water cube trap. I think he should’ve made it to at least 1 more movie, maybe kill him off in 6 in the same way Then again he’s one of my favourite characters, maybe that’s why I’m still salty 😂 But I adore this franchise!! I adore this fandom and hearing other people’s opinions on the movies / characters

I've grown to appreciate Saw V a lot more over the years as well, though it's not up there with I, II, and VI. It's somewhere in the middle. The concept of tests involving teamwork that get more grueling the more casualties there are was really good, just not executed very well. The characters were really stupid for not working together from the start, especially that foureyed dumbass Charles who kept antagonizing everyone with shit he knew about them and making himself out to be suspicious. Like, really? You're life and the lives of others are at stake and you think being a dick is going to help your situation? He wears glasses for fuck's sake, he should have been smarter than this. The Pints of Sacrifice trap was brutal, up there with The Rack and Silence Circle as tests that go right through me. So yeah, Saw V was fairly decent.

The plot of the Fatal Five in my opinion was the laziest, absolute worst writing in the whole series. The thin explanation at the end as to why they were all in it was terrible and that "twist" if you even want to call it that, was hamfisted in at the end to justify the game. NONE, count them, NONE of the characters' names in that game were ever revealed in the movie, so why were we as the audience supposed to care about them at all? This is the 2nd worst movie in my opinion as a result of this (also this movie feels like it existed just to kill Strahm off)
