Saxon tends to be a groovy, barrel-house band. Hook, chorus, solo, and out the door. They are a fun band, and pretty easy for non-metalheads to tolerate if they come on at a party. They are in no way extreme in technical musicianship, but they can pull off the songs live, even to this day, and give a great show. It's easy to get a little spoiled when you are listening to the curated highlights of the best rock and metal bands in history. But we who are "in the scene" will sometimes need to take a break from the best of the best, because we've worn them thin over the years. The good, solid bands like Saxon come in at that point, or the lesser known but great bands that take a little digging to find.

Saxon is a more stripped-down to the basics style of metal from that NWOBHM movement. if you wanna progress to a "richer sound", try out some DIAMOND HEAD. they're one of the all time greats from that era of metal. i recommend any song from the "Lightning to the Nations" album from 1980. just pick any song off there and you'll see what i mean.

I bought a compilation of songs by Diamond Head and they all sounded like potentially great songs, if only they were played by a band with 2 guitarists and a singer whose vocals actally fit the music.... like Metallica! I think this was and is a band to study if you have your own band. They laid the groundwork for Thrash metal, to be sure, but I don't really enjoy listening to them.

I believe it comes down to production values. The most popular groups were usually lucky enough to have a major label budget, and more studio time to made a better souding product. Meanwhile there's groups that could have been timeless, who built a live following in their day with great playing and songs, but have a recorded output that sounds like it was recorded in one afternoon in a basement somewhere.

I was born in ‘69 a long haired tattooed white boy in Canada. This album is one of my firsts and I holds special place in my heart. I love Saxon for that reason. What ever you liked at 14 you like forever. Music , women , etc. Try some Manowar, they’re super cheesy and wonderful. Love Saxon. And Manowar, ... ‘other bands play, Manowar kills!’

Great analysis. Good job, guys! Please give Iron Maiden another chance. Maybe try Wasted Years. It's more recent material (in the context of how long they've been around) and is very "approachable" for a mainstream audience. Also, you have to remember that Bruce Dickinson is a classically trained Opera singer. Dude is amazing.. And, he flies the band around in his own passenger jet. Like a Boss.. 😜

@@irrlicht5836 you may be right. I just think Bruce is a better singer. this is the best thing Lemmy ever wrote. Shit, this song should be teached in shools. It is such a simple, crude, almost animalistic approach to poetry, yet the depth, agression and resonance is unparalleled; and the ever pounding bass line works as the perfect frame. Such a great song.

Oh sorry, english isnt my native language ( i guess u saw it xd ) . So yes i could misread it. But hey, phantom of the opera is surely not operatic heavy metal to me. I rly think they can love this song, but im agree with Dickinson, they will not like him anymore. But btw i discover metal in 2003 ( i was something like 10 ) and it was iron maiden, metallica, type o negative, slayer etc.. and i had no nostalgia at all too obviously. For exemple: if i want to discover rap ( wich i already did years ago) i will surely not begin by the new bands but by wu tang clan, NWA, tupac, dre, dmx etc etc and the list goes on for every genre in music

In its day , this song was a breath of fresh air to a lot of plodding heavy rock / metal that was around in the mid 70's and in the 30 odd years since it has been superseded by others but it holds up quite well and Saxon were an inspiration to Metallica Megadeth and a host of other thrashers.

Listen to Yes-Roundabout. Classic prog. Steve Howe was the first guitarist inducted into Guitar Player Magazine's Gallery of Greats as the best overall guitarist! The rest of the musicians in the ban are equally recognized as the top players of their instruments. Rush and many prog metal bands list them as main influences.
