For me this scene really highlights what being Feringi is all about. Everything that can and does happen, is a form of exchange. Thusly, it can be mediated in your favor. The Rules of Acquisition aren't about money. It's a whole system for living your life. Never hold so dear a possession or an idea that you can't part with it to gain the advantage. Even your own life can be exchanged for a high enough price.

Ah, but consider the impact of the spread of the rules of acquisition among the federation; It would likely lead to improved understanding of the ferengi frame of reference and possibly improved social relations. And there's a reason socio-economics is a term. He could 'give away' a copy of the rules, sure, because doing so is a price being paid for improved socio-economic relations between the ferengi and the federation, ergo; more business for him.

@@Qermaq This are my thoughts exactly. He got up, ready to go into lecture mode, and then when he discovered that his 'student' was missing major key points, decided to bring it back to a more personal level, thus sitting once again. Its something ive done quite a few times when the excitement of the moment drives you to stand to present your argument, before you realize its the wrong path to take, and instead dial it back down. It also shows just how frustrated, but determined to do everything he can to get his point across, making him look both anxious and frustrated with his continued pacing back and forth. Really this is brilliantly played textbook human interaction, with an incredible eye for detail on the many various layers of said interaction.

the thing is, what we call capitalism isn't really what the ferengi would call capitalism. The rules of acquisition are actually quite logical, mostly. A vulcan should come to the same conclusion that quark did. The faults of the ferengi are because they DON'T use logic and follow the rules, Quark by comparison, lives exactly by the rules and in his own backwards way, is quite logical when he's able to frame a problem as a cost benefit analysis

Quarks way of thinking is akin to how the humans were on the outside looking in and then became indirectly and unintentionally involved with the conflict between the Vulcans and Andorians. They ended up with the same situation Quark described here and ultimately it was Archer and Shran who de-escalated the conflicts together, especially since earth wasn’t ready for such a large scale conflict. Archer had no desire for enemies, and Shran figured out very quickly that the Captain wasn’t too fond of Vulcans himself, even if he trusted them, and even that was strained. Ultimately it was Archer who could convince Shran that, while they were prepared, albeit a bit paranoid , the Vulcans had good intentions, the Andorians and were also the same. Blessed are the peacemakers

This is one of my favorite scenes in DS9. I love this scene from the standpoint of a philosophy buff. You can have a logical position, one that you are certain of and not see things from a completely different perspective and once you change your perspective you change your mind. I love this scene for that. She was right from her own perspective, her own narrow view. Quark opens her mind to new possibilities and new premises that she had not even considered and thus draws a new valid conclusion that is also logical but completely different from her original stance. I love it.

The best way to beat a closed system is to introduce new components to expand those views and change the output of the system; in this case, she wanted to stock up weapons to escalate the situation, but when Quark helped her realize that since nobody's going to be getting weapons, a cease-fire was practically waiting with open arms for her to take

My main disagreement is when you said that she looks away ‘to consider’ his logic. In my experience , the habit of looking away from the person you’re debating with is more commonly done because the person has just been confronted with something that goes directly against their position and/or beliefs (such as here) and is trying to deny the point. It is a way of disengaging with your opponent so that you can ignore the point. Fortunately, Quark is able to push past her recalcitrance and drive his points home, allowing her logic to overcome her bias.

Depends on the length and scale of war. Short and small is good as that increases the need for weapons and ships while not affecting over all trade. Long wars ruin all trade routes, their expensive because you need to defend your ships as pirates are free to raid as they please, and everyone thinks a merchant is a spy.

That certainly plays a part, true. The point of having the two rules, especially right next to each other, from the perspective of a Ferengi is that there is opportunity for profit in either, so there is no special need for seeking either, at least on “moral” or business grounds (same thing for a Ferengi).
@Xo-3130
@Xo-3130 4 жыл бұрын
There an old idea that war leads to technology and much like these rules it can lead to profits but the thing to remember is that longer a war goes on the less this is true. At the start it sparks production and technological development but the longer it goes on the more it becomes an issie. A dumb of resources and more someone would desire quantity over quality.

Strangely I find the dynamic much more personal and realistic between these two characters than others involving Ferengi and other species... including supposed more romantic situations - which always felt completely forced and contrived or farcical. Very memorable and first rate acting from them both... especially her.

I think the change between sitting next to her and talking at her from the standing position differentiates Quark's role. He changes from a personal (sitting) to an impersonal (standing) approach to explaining his position. When he sits with her, he explains his philosophy and how it applies to the situation - like a tutor explaining the context of a problem. When he stands in front of her, he states facts about the situation - like a teacher stating facts.

The 'sit-down-now-its-awkward' actually serves a purpose. Notice that the Vulcan maintains her posture; her upper body and legs are away from Quark. Quark has his upper body facing the Vulcan. He is open, she is closed. Her body language is clear at this point; I don't agree with Quark. Around the 3:00 mark, it's obvious. She looks at him occasionally, but when his point hits home, she looks away. Not just thinking, but stung! She literally can't face Quarks truth! Like a pouting child, she can't meet her parents gaze! The cuts where we see the Vulcan, but hear Quark, we are encouraged to look for reactions on her face; she says emotions aren't relevant, but that's just her training talking. We know how hot-blooded Vulcan's really are...

I love these scene analyzations so much. I love film and explanations of the process and they're very informative. And insightful. As for dealing with the oppressive CBS nonsense, the best I can advise is front-loading your channel with the content unlisted, dealing with the crap, and when you're cleared to go, then make them public. Most money is made in the first couple days, so you'd be past the hurdles and maximize monetization. Of course, you'd have to pack a lot of content in the que waiting for publication, so...delays. Otherwise, let's convince CBS to sell of the entire franchise to Seth MacFarlane who I believe would APPRECIATE channels like Lore Reloaded making content.

It's an investment. When you tell someone you're 'giving' them something, they often reach the conclusion that they owe you, which is good for you. Further, one could reasonably argue that the more people aware of, and following, the Rules of Acquisition, the better they work, which increases both efficiency and profit. Finally, since the Rules of Acquisition are likely available on most major centralized knowledge databases for free already, it isn't a product that others are willing to generally pay for, so there is no opportunity of acquisition to begin with.

Is there anything you can do to even out the audio levels? The show clips are extremely quite while your voiceover is booming. I find myself constantly adjusting my volume when listening to these videos. Just a suggestion. Not sure what your technical limits are in these situations.

I think it's kind of ironic. The Ferengi never really had internal strife outside of personal conflicts until they started to move away from their system of essentially pure capitalism. Fights amongst themselves was always a battle of wits and everything was settled based on how profitable the outcome would be. You even see the Ferengi accept their situation when they end up in a lose. With all their thoughts on how they can recover from that lose instead of dwelling on it. Internal war was unprofitable so they never did it. External war was only profitable up to a certain point. The Maquis completely spat in the face of settling conflicts through how much it could benefit themselves. All the Maquis thought about was how they could sacrifice themselves for their cause which was considered insulting to a Ferengi.

I don't know how you feel about suggestions about new content, but... can you do a video on Janeway and promotions (and lack there of.) Kim should've been an Lieutenant at the end of the series easily. In the novels he was promoted to that rank in 2378 when they returned and he's STILL a Lieutenant in 2382.

They certainly have great chemistry. It is nice to see him out-logic a vulcan. Not bad for a joke character from a joke species. Also, i really get the impression that they are friends, which is also good, because it shows him having a rounded personality, a circle of real friends who have nothing to do with the show. He's not just the whacky greedy bartender.

I think DS9 did away with the idea of a joke species. The ferengi were undoubtedly 2-dimentional when they first appeared in TNG, and it was painful to watch. In DS9 the ferengi are fleshed out and become one of the richest (no pun...) and most intricate cultures of the franchise

Just realized something. Ferengi are all about the profit, even to the point of selling small vials of their ashes after death. However, all of them seem to want to hand out the book that lists their Rules of Acquisition for free. Hmmmmm.

One thing about this scene is the tragedy in it. Not for this particular plot. For how little the showrunners ever figured out what to do with the Ferengi. TNG and DS9 had a golden opportunity to create a whole new perspective on the universe of Star Trek, but no one could figure out how to bring it out in the stories. This is one of the moments that show us what the Ferengi could have been, and likely will never be.
@martinbennett8752

That line of Quark's about 'remind me to give you a copy of the rules of acquisition you never know when they might come in handy' the writers missed a beat - they should have had quark say 'remind me to sell you a copy of the rules of acquisition, you never know when they might come in handy, so I'll throw in a discount." Ferengi never GIVE anything away - unless they expect a lot more in return - so thinking about it maybe Quark was bargaining a free copy of the rules for the outcome he was working towards? Any thoughts on that? Was it just a slip by the writers or a REALLY subtle piece of dialogue?

He's trying to buy peace. If the price is 'I give a copy of the RoA to this Vulcan'? I'd call that a bargain. (Sure, it's not the security of the entire alpha quadrant for the lives of one criminal, one Romulan senator and the self respect of on Starfleet captain, but legendary deals are legendary because they're rare.)

Voyager would have faired better in the Delta Quadrant if they had a Ferengi crewmember… Nog has a transporter duplicate accident (a la Riker) and the second version joins Voyager in order to give "himself" space. And just for laughs Garak was with him and Garak 2 is onboard as well - Voyager wouldn't get back because they would be running the Delta Federation, or they'd get back a _lot_ faster. Ferengi philosophy should be required reading in StarFleet, if only to provide a counter viewpoint. We don't see StarFleet much in Picard so far, but Ferenginar is now either part of the Federation or Federation adjacent (you will be assimilated - Eddington), especially female Ferengi looking for opportunities in a society with less misogynistic baggage. The addition of them along with the Cardassians would make the Federation far more pragmatic (although they didn't seem so in Picard - StarFleet was played, and how do you do that to a organisation that has Betazoid members?).

Since this appears to be about movie technique, and aspects of direction and production, I point out that you are overmodulating. Bring your mic levels down below 100% modulation, so there won't be a buzz to your voice, or sit further from the microphone. Nice analysis of the scene.
