Hello, this is Doug with Air Purification Education and today I'm going to review the Austin Air Healthmate air purifier. I have been a Professional Air Purification Consultant for over 15 years and I have experience with over 100 different Air purification solutions.
here is a quick summary of my personal and professional experience with the Austin Air healthmate air purifier - I have a lot of first-hand experience with this unit. I have sold a couple thousand of these units over the past 15 years to hundreds of different customers all over the US. I sold the Austin Air Healthmate units to many Residential customers with homes and apartments, Business Office Environments and I also sold a ton of them to School classrooms, as well, a lot of different environments. So, I have a decent understanding of how effective this unit is for different applications - like Dust, allergies, Asthma, Smoke, chemical sensitivities, etc. Also, I actually own 2 of the Austin Air healthmate units in my own home - and I have had them for over 15 years - I run them 24 hours a day so these units literally have over 131,000 hours of runtime on them... here's the math 24 x 365 = 8760 hrs. x 15 years = 131,400 TOTAL HOURS of RUNTIME. Should you buy the Austin Air Healthmate?
I bought my 1st Austin air healthmate for my bedroom because I was gagging on the dust that was coming from our vents when we turned on the heat. This was waking me up at @3am in the morning and I had to go downstairs to get water for relief and it took me about 45 minutes to get back to sleep... after a couple of nights of this - I decided to look into an air purification solution - I had been in the air quality industry for about 1 year at this point in time so I knew Austin and IQAir were 2 of the best solutions on the market - And Even though I knew IQAir was supposed to filter better - I chose Austin because the filters lasted for 5 years and I felt like I'd save money on the cost of ownership. Also, The Healthmate was about $550 at that point in time and the IQAir HPP was about $900 so there was a pretty large difference in the initial investment for the actual units. The 1st night I ran the Austin in my bedroom it completely fixed my gagging and coughing problem and I didn't have that issue again for the past 16 or so years, so yeah - the health mate was a complete game changer for me for sleeping and I'd never even dream of not having it run when I sleep.
Where MANUFACTURED: In the USA in Buffalo, NY. - most of the parts come from the US - some components are manufactured in Canada. the cord does not come from the US - the manufacturer said the cords are 7 to 10 times more expensive to get in the US. Plus, they have multiple different motor suppliers that they deal with some in the US, Mexico and Asian countries. The carbon and steel always come from a US Supplier.
Austin has the largest air cleaner manufacturing facility in the world in Buffalo, NY.

I remove the filters and vacuum / blow them out from the inside out on the main filter, always outside and up wind using an electric leaf blower, its amazing how much dust and material blows out then I reinstall, its the same filter over 10 years, it appears to work the same as the day I bought it used for 200. I love the low tech features

Several years ago, I banged the IQAir prefilter on the concrete about 17 times and was amazed at all the dust continuously pouring out of it. Then when I put it back into the air purifier - on the same speed (5 or 6) - I could feel the air at about 8 inches away instead of the 2 inches b4 the concrete banging. It made a HUGE difference in the air flow. I'm fixin to make a video of the dust coming out of it when it is full... Your method sounds less "cavemanish", LOL! I just got a leaf blower last month and blew out my dryer vent... We thought something was dead in it... but maybe I'll try that on the IQAir prefilters, as well. I had a few folks say they used an air compressor to push out the dust from their filters... But hey, I now have a leaf blower so... we'll see - Thanks!👍

Yes, but I worry about recommending that unit as I've had several people through the years mention they smelled an odor coming from it after about 6 or so months. A musty odor. I haven't heard anyone complain in about 4 years on this issue but it prevented me from recommending it for a long time. I feel safer with the bedroom unit for MCS as I had not heard a complaint on it and some folks raved about its ability to help them. Thanks!

I have a 35 year old Austin air filter that I just replaced all of the filters on which I have done every year or two since I bought it. This time when I replaced the filters an flipped it back over, it would not turn back on. It sat upside down for three days waiting for the filters to arrive. Is there anything I can do to trouble shoot?

Please contact Austin Air at the following and I think they can help you. I talked with them a few months ago and they said after the warranty is up (5 years) they will fix your unit for $90 dollars if it needs a new motor or fan or whatever so if your unit konks out in year 8 outside of your warranty - for $90 plus shipping- Austin will fix your unit like new which I think is amazing. But maybe they can help you troubleshoot it first: austinair.com/contact/ BTW, 35 years is CRAZY!! Ain't nothing last 35 years, these days👍😄

1) Can you please tell me what level of MCS you are dealing with? When you smell perfume or cologne does it bother you a little, or do you need to get away from the perfume/cologne because you really dislike it... or do you immediately get migraines? 2) Where would you rate your MCS level on a 1 to 10 continuum? 1 the least and 10 the most/worst? Thanks!

hey, Thanks for the reply and the quick response 1. It was never really diagnosed by a doctor (I live in a country with zero awareness of the subject), but I'm sure the level is high. If I smell a perfume I just can't be in the same room with the same person, I have to go out at that moment, it stresses my whole body. No migraines from it. The same with scent diffusers of various kinds or a room that has been washed with standard cleaning agents (I can be in the same room for a minute or two at most, and that too in terrible suffering and with difficulty breathing), people who are in the same room with me and use scented laundry soap/conditioner or scented creams, same story as above, etc. '.. If there's a burning smell outside (happens a lot here), I just can't go outside and close all the windows. I would rate me somewhere around 8/9 I think. My house is completely free of odors (unless I temporarily rent an apartment that comes with various fragrant furniture, in which case I need an air purifier to remove these odors), but the main job of the air purifier is to clean the toxins and odors that enter the apartment from the outside, and also from everyday products that emit odors (like cartons, etc.).

Thank you for the very descriptive answer. OK, you are fairly Chemically Sensitive but the good news is if you get a good holistic doctor - they can change your diet and help you become much less chemically sensitive over time. In my experience, MCS people become more MCS as they get older so getting a good MCS holistic doctor to help reduce your symptoms would be a priority - to me. As the air purifier solution is more of a band aid - than a "solution" which fixes your problem. The best solutions for your needs that I have experience with (in no particular order as different MCS people will find different solutions work best for their particular needs) would include: 1) Austin Air Bedroom Unit - I know of some MCS people who've said they can't live without this unit. 2) AirPura - I'd contact them and tell them what you want the unit to do and they can tell you which one they think is the best for your needs (they are carbon experts, IMO) - and they make very good air purifiers (with a steel shell which shouldn't offgass and bother you: www.airpura.com/pages/contact-us 3) IQAir HealthPro Plus: I know of several MCS people who have used the HPP with a lot of success - I also know of some who couldn't co-exist with it (you don't know what will happen until the person has the unit in their possession). But I would want this solution to work as it filters the ultrafine particles the best, IMO. 4) IQAir GC Unit: IQAir, the manufacturer, will probably tell you to go with this unit as it has about 2.5 times more carbon than the HPP - but it does not filter the ultrafine particles as well as the HPP as the HPP has elite UF particle filtration capabilities, IMO. If you go with one solution but it bothers you then I would return it and try a different one - all MCS people are different. Hope this helps. - Good Luck!👍 @@user-yy4si5nv4s

Thank you for a very fair review. I am a big fan of the Austin HealthMate and it has greatly helped my asthma and my allergies to dogs and dust for the past 9 years. Cigarette smoke and odors are not a problem. I live in an area with onshore daily breezes/winds (central coast of California), which is experiencing more wildfires and smoke from fires further away. I am coming up on 9 years of use so I am exploring whether to buy another HealthMate filter or buy another machine. I am retired so something as costly as the IQAir Healthpro Plus and the Aeris are out of my price range. Since I already have an Austin HealthMate would you recommend simply buying my third HealthMate filter or is there a machine priced at or below $400-$500 that would be as good or better than my HealthMate. I picked that price range because new HealthMate filters are now up to almost $300. Or am I just overthinking the issue? Thanks. (P.S. I also use the top of my HealthMate as a place to temporarily pile stuff.

If you have been happy with the Austin Air Healthmate unit then I think I would just buy the replacement filter as the units themselves seem to be able to last for over 20 years (mine are over 15 years old). I think the Coway Airmega 400 would be the sub $500 unit that would be my pick if you chose to go with a lesser expensive unit but I highly doubt it will last as long as the Austins and you may not like its filtering capabilities as much as the Austin. I think the Austin Air Healthmate is sealed better than the Coway 400 so, I'd probably just get the replacement filter. Thanks!👍

@@AirPurificationEducationThanks for the quick reply. I think I was seriously overthinking the issue and being seduced by all the bells and whistles on the newer units. I only started to think about the issue because the Winix 5500-2 was on sale for about a third less than the cost of replacing the HealthMate filter. The HealthMate has done well for the past 9 years in filtering out dust, pollen, etc. that aggravate my asthma and hay fever. BTW, I see that there is now a generic filter replacement for the HealthMate filter for about half the price. I’m sticking with the OEM but when you aren’t busy writing your detailed answers to questions and testing new units, you might want to take a look at it. If I follow your link to the Austin HealthMate units, will you still get some money if I then buy a HealthMate filter? 1) Yeah, the Winix 5500 pricing IS nice, for sure - but your Healthmate def. filters better and is a better overall investment in your long-term health, IMO. 2) "a generic filter replacement for the HealthMate filter for about half the price" I have talked to Austin about some of the generic filter replacements on the market and they said the American made replacement filters are pretty good but the ones from China are not very good. I actually talk a little bit about this in this video where I discuss the Chinese-made Filter Monster replacement for the Austin Air Healthmate at around 18:50 in the video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i9hmfZmb1q-pnY0.html&ab_channel=AirPurificationEducation - In summation: I would NOT buy it. 3) "If I follow your link to the Austin HealthMate units, will you still get some money if I then buy a HealthMate filter?" - No, but it's totally cool - thanks for thinking of me... 😄 4) The Thanks button... @@AirPurificationEducationPutting a thank you button on your video’s isn’t begging. It’s just a convenient way for your viewers to express their appreciation for all your hard work. Also, I just learned that Shark is making air purifiers. They have one that say you never have to change the HEPA filter, but it’s really a 5 year replacement. If they put in a motor comparable to their higher end vacuums, then it should be able to move a good amount of air.
@AirPurificationEducation
@AirPurificationEducation 2 ай бұрын
I will def. think about that button - thanks! 1) And I've briefly checked out some of the Shark purifiers recently at someone's request... but I would currently just consider them "also rans", at best... - def. not elite. They are trying to sell on "saving money" by not changing your filter... "The Shark NeverChange Air Purifier MAX"... I see this as just a marketing ploy to try to differentiate themselves in a very competitive market. 2) And this blurb, "Purify extra-large areas-up to 1400 sq. ft. in just one hour ^. Perfect for multiple rooms, large bedrooms and living rooms, basements, and more." - screams of not really caring about your customers... as they are basically touting a possible single air exchange in 1400 sq. ft. per hour which is honestly, ridiculous... As most everyone knows - you really want at least 3 air exchanges - even better 4 or 5 per hour with your solution... So, they are being "marketing Smart/Savvy" with their cost saving concept and supposed large square footage coverage ability of the solution - but in reality - it is not a good thing, at all, IMO. 3) The few videos I've seen on their site show people wiping off a dirty screen filter from the unit like they're the only purifier that has this filter screen. Odd but maybe they feel they can market it this way to sell it to their vacuum customer base. 4) "NEVERCHANGE™ FILTRATION: HEPA filtration that won’t need replacement+. Debris Defense filter protects HEPA layers, for up to 5 years" ---Great... the NeverChange filter that gets changed every 5 years... ya just can't make this stuff up. I'd be embarrassed to push this product with these kinds of tactics. 5) It says, " A HEPA filter captures 99.98% of particles." When in reality HEPA is 99.97% at .3 microns... so seems like they are indirectly saying they perform better then HEPA... which may impress some consumers who are not really filtration knowledgeable. 6) I think they have made vacuums and some other things for many years and decided to enter the air purifier market, as well, and the heads of some departments decided: 1) The unit must look different than most units on the market - must look unique. 2) We need to differentiate our offering = "NEVERCHANGE" filtration which they apparently trademarked.... so you'll save more money with our solution. "Shark NeverChange™ Air Purifier MAX, saves you $300 or more in filter replacement costs over 5 years*." 3) It can cover 1/2 your house all by itself. ***but they do not seem very interested in talking about how well the solution filters... which is pretty interesting. ***Also, they have many asterisks after many of their claims on the product page, but I don't see the additional information at the bottom of the page like most all other websites... I am losing more and more respect for the Shark brand the more I analyze their new purifiers on their website😠 These guys just want to sell product regardless of how much it actually improves air quality, IMO. @@JBass33

Thanks for your thorough reviews! Which would you recommend for second hand smoke? It’s coming from my neighbor (I live in a townhome) and it’s driving me nuts!!! I have a Coway and it helps some, but I can still smell the odor. I have a baby, so this is really important to me. Thanks!

Hey Maya - thank you for your question. Can you please tell me which Coway unit you currently have that is not able to help enough with the smoke issue? I am curious. Thanks! Smoke tends to be very difficult to take out of the air effectively by air purifiers - even 2nd hand smoke coming from a neighbor. Here is a list of units I am familiar with that should do the job - in order of best to less best. 1) Airpura T700 - amzn.to/3wcNiql - this unit will work even if someone is smoking in the same room as the unit. It is the newest smoke solution from Airpura and it has a more powerful fan than the older T600. But you may not need the additional CFMs... I'm not sure how large the room is you are putting it in. Could possibly be considered overkill for 2nd hand smoke coming from a neighbor. 2) Airpura T600 - amzn.to/4byYqhD - this is the older version of their smoke solution that has less CFMs but it is a beast for cigarette/cigar smoke. Again it will work even if someone is smoking in the same room the unit resides in - which is extremely difficult for an air purifier to accomplish. This unit is $150 less than the newer T700 and I do think most folks don't really need to upgrade to the T700 - unless they are putting it in a very large room. Could possibly be considered overkill for 2nd hand smoke coming from a neighbor. 3) IQAir GC MultiGas - this unit is another very strong solution with a lot of carbon. amzn.to/4bEyf96 It is more expensive than the Airpura solutions but I don't know if it is superior in performance - I think they are similar in performance but this is a couple of hundred dollars more. Could possibly be considered overkill for 2nd hand smoke coming from a neighbor. *** the above 3 units are all considered very strong for cigarette/cigar smoke and can be used in the same room with a smoker - so they will definitely perform well if we are dealing with 2nd hand smoke from a neighbor**** They also could possibly be considered overkill for 2nd hand smoke coming from a neighbor... it depends on how much smoke is coming into your environment, how sensitive you are to it and the cubic footage of your space. 4) IQAir HealthPro Plus: amzn.to/3NIJ6Uq This unit has about 5 lbs. of carbon (the GC unit has 12 lbs. of carbon). So, I like this unit a lot for 2nd hand smoke as I think it has enough carbon to handle it but it is also elite at filtering for ultrafine particles (.1 to .003 microns) and they are the most dangerous to our health and the most plentiful in the air. UF particles make up 90% of the particles in the air we breathe. So, I like for people to use this machine, if possible, as I think it is the best solution for people's overall health. It filters ultrafine particles at 99.5% down to .003 microns which is elite, IMO. 5) Austin Air Healthmate Plus: amzn.to/3P5za9h American made with lots of carbon but it also has additives that help with cigarette smoke that the regular Healthmate does not. 6) Rabbit Air MINUSA2 - SPA-780A - choose the odor filter option. www.rabbitair.com/products/minusa2-air-purifier?variant=29446108413975 - I know of a casino that purchased 20 units for tobacco smoke and then purchased 20 more units 6 months later so it was making them happy. As of right now - these are 6 solutions I think should do a good job on 2nd hand smoke from a neighbor - there are other air purifiers that "may/may not" fix the problem as well... but then the list starts to get "iffy". Hope that helps - Good Luck!👍

@@AirPurificationEducationYou’re the best!! Thanks so much for taking the time out to provide these recommendations. I have the Coway Airmega Mighty Air purifier. As I mentioned, it does fairly well. But I’ll be digging into your list today!

Yes, I think the Mighty unit is a decent unit for the money for particles (I think it is one of the better units for particles for less than $250). However, I don't think it really has a lot of carbon and it may not be enough for the 2nd hand smoke in your environment. I will say this... if a Mighty can "sometimes solve the problem" in your environment... Then you could possibly be successful with the Coway Airmega 300: amzn.to/3OKKAz3 It has a lot more carbon than the Mighty which should work much better for the 2nd hand smoke. And it is considerably less expensive than the other 6 options I initially presented to you. I think it is kinda hit or miss with the 300 and smoke but if the Mighty did a pretty good job then the 300 is 2 steps up from it from a carbon standpoint and that would hopefully solve the issue. Of note: Also, many manufacturers will instruct users to run the units on medium speed at the most for smoke/odor issues so the carbon has a better chance of absorbing the odors. Thanks and Good Luck! 👍 @@mayabarnes5973

I just read the reviews on the Austin Air Healthmate Amazon listing that shows 29 reviews... And some customers are complaining about getting used units, or the units being damaged in shipping... The unit will arrive at your home upside down and sometimes there will be black carbon kinda scattered around... That happened to one of my 3 shipments. It can arrive kinda messy and I don't really blame folks for getting upset about it. Esp. if they don't expect it... I knew it was a possibility so it wasn't a big deal when it happened to me. But it was definitely the messiest air purifier I received out of about 10 shipments of different brands. One guy is complaining that the filter only lasted a few months and they only offered 40% off on the new filter. I've never had an Austin customer say their filter lasted "a few months" - so I don't know what is going on there... But, a few years ago, I did have a few folks say they smelled something musty coming from the Plus unit within 6-12 months... so I was very reluctant to recommend that unit. Plus, I had a few Austin Air Healthmates returned due to 2nd hand smoke from neighbors in apartments/townhomes - just like your situation - so I would not recommend the regular Healthmate for you. If you can go with the IQAir unit - that is just about the best solution you can get for Ultrafine particles, as well... so I always like to see people go with that unit - if they can. That said - ya know, maybe another Coway Mighty in your space would do the trick for you - as the least expensive option. So, there are many options. Thanks! @@mayabarnes5973

Is it true that carbon filters can release trapped gases over time? Does the Healthmate suffer from this as well? And how do I avoid it?

Hmmm - I've never heard this question before and unfortunately, I honestly don't know. I think anything is possible. It is VERY hard to judge which units have the best carbon solution amongst many of the more popular ones... I do think the IQAir GC and some of the AirPura models are some of the best for carbon. You may want to chat with some folks at www.airpura.com/ about your question as I think they know as much about carbon as any company I am familiar with. Thanks!

I live in the middle of wildfire country, you said this isn't good for wildfire smoke, yet many other reviews mention that this is a top contender in that category. Could you expand on why you don't recommend it for this wildfire smoke? Looking over what the filter is made of it seems perfect for it. What are some other units you would use instead?

I do think the Austin Air Healthmate can be decent for wildfire smoke but I've had some units returned for smoke issues in the past - and that has hurt my confidence in the solution for that application. But I do think it can do a decent job for the application. That said, these days you can get an Aeris 3 in 1 unit for the same price as an Austin Air Healthmate and that would provide the best particle filtration for a mass-produced unit that I am aware of. And it has better air circulation, as well. So, I currently rate the Aeris 3 in 1 as the best for wildfires and the IQAir HealthPro Plus as the 2nd best. I am in the process of making a video comparing the 2 units to each other head to head. I hope to have the video completed and uploaded in 4 days. Thank you!👍

OK, Curtis - here is how I would rate the units to the best of my knowledge for your asthmatic son and the fireplace: 1) Airpura V614: It has 18 lbs. of carbon (and they specialize in carbon) to go along with a Super Hepa filter that is supposed to perform better than HEPA and I tend to believe these guys as they are a hardcore air purification manufacturer. 2) IQAir HealthPro Plus: I think you may need to change your carbon filter out at sooner intervals with this option... 3) Aeris 3 in 1: Great filtration but I'm not sure the carbon is quite as strong as IQAir's HPP and if you have to replace the filter for more carbon - you'll have to replace the entire filter for @$200 or so... 4) I would not recommend the Austin Air units for your application as I've had a few returned just for 2nd hand smoke from neighbors so I never recommend them for smoke applications. Hope this helps - Please let me know if you have additional questions - thanks!

@AirPurificationEducation 4 ай бұрын
Thank you for your question. I purchased one about 16 years ago because I was waking up in the middle of the night gagging from dust coming from my vents. I know it does a good job on some particle filtration as it immediately fixed my problem and I've dealt with many happy Austin Customers over the years. That said, ultrafine particles (.1 to .003 microns in size) are the most plentiful and dangerous to humans. And I think the IQAir Healtpro Plus and Aeris 3 in 1 are better for these than the Austin Air Healthmate. There are very few units on the market currently that do a good job of filtering UF Particles, IMO. I think the IQAir HPP and Aeris 3 in1 are two of the best for this... So you can get an Austin Air Healthmate replacement filter for about $300 which is a little less than a brand new Coway 300. I think the Austin Air units probably last longer than the Coway units and I think the Healthmate probably filters a little better for particles, as well + it has much more carbon so it is probably a lot better for odors. So, the only units I currently think are better than the Austin Air Healthmate are the IQAir HPP ($899) and the Aeris 3 in 1 (currently not available in the US - but may be available in Europe). I hope that helps you with your decision. Good Luck!👍@@jessejordan310

Honestly what makes this any different than any other purifier with the exact same specification filters? Frankly speaking the cost is seriously not justified with these purifiers other than where and how they are manufactured. Is it important? Sure. But is it a new innovative technology to air purification? ABSOLUTELY NOT. There are so many different new technologies coming out and frankly I hate to say it but Austin and iQAir even LOOK like they need to be more innovative. And no it's not "don't fix what's broken"... It's that there are FAR too many advancements (yes scientifically and data driven) that exists today. At the least the technology/feature these thousands of dollars have are can literally be made BY YOURSELF.

Most air purifiers that say "HEPA" don't actually perform at a HEPA level. Anyone can say they have a HEPA air purifier and the industry is not regulated to the point that anyone really knows if the units actually perform at a HEPA level or not. Years ago, they came out with the CADR ratings to bring some sort of "regulation" to the industry... but if you saw my video on the CADR ratings, you will know they are not to be trusted at all to determine which units are the best. IQAir and Austin are really good units that have been 3rd party tested and perform at a HEPA level. IQAir actually filters particles better than HEPA and some people need this additional filtration for their asthma, allergies or whatever ails them. Many air purifiers have HEPA-type filters but air escapes around the filter as they don't have a good seal around the filters and/or the units progressively filter worse and worse as the filters get clogged more and more with dust over time. Sure, there have been many 'new technologies' that have come out over the past 20 years but do any of them actually filter better than an IQAir HealthPro Plus? Not that I am aware of - or anyone else in the industry. Agreed, both the HealthPro Plus and Austin Air Healthmate units are rather 'dated' looking but IQAir looks like they have the 'next generation' version of the HPP called the Atem X... which looks like a larger and more powerful version of their Atem unit. So, they have 'Modernized' their offering, for sure. NO - you CANNOT make an air purification solution at home by yourself that purifies as well as the HPP... It provides ELITE, World Class levels of purification... IQAir and Aeris employ some serious engineers - the owner of Aeris has a master's degree in engineering from MIT... do you actually think just ANYBODY can strap a filter to a fan in their garage and equal the same level of filtration? Sure, we can all build a go-cart in our garage but none of us are gonna be able to challenge Ferrari. Thank you for your comments and please let me know if you have additional questions - thanks! 👍

@@laraleopaldi7255 Hey Lara, I had heard many folks through the years say the larger unit improved their environment and breathing (sometimes dramatically) but I don't really recall anyone ever telling me the Jr. unit did a good/great job for them. Not sure why... Also, the manufacturer initially came out and said it could cover about 750 sq ft. but over time... some folks in the industry felt like it only covered about 200/250 sq. ft. which is a big disparity... I think some feedback I received suggested it wasn't very good for odors... Also, I think there are other competing units in the market that can provide similar or maybe even better results for less money like the Winix 5500 or the Coway Mighty. So, I'm not a huge fan of the Jr. I do like the larger-sized unit much more and feel it is a strong investment in one's overall health... I just don't currently feel the same way about the Jr. unit.
