Slick Tires on Mountain Bike

I used to take a single speed bike with the narrow 25mm tires to commute to work, but there of many times when parts of the trail are closed. I sold my single speed, and now I only own an euro bike and a mountain bike. I do not like to use the roads as during rush hours, drivers can be very aggressive, which is why stick to trails. The majority of the route consists of paved roads and some gravel-like trails. I did not want to wear down my knobby mountain bike tires, so I decided to look for some slick/road tires. I did not want skinny looking tires, which is why I purchased the Nimbus 2 Sport, 650B X 2.3 (27.5 X 2.3). The retail price is $29.00 each, but I got them on sale at Bike Barn for $24.95.
Since we are currently under rather rare situation, I have stayed away from group rides so my euro bike is gathering dust right now. I decided to go on a solo 46 ride on the trails on my MTB with the new fat slick tires. I will continue to use my MTB for training as it offers lots of resistance, I am sure my euro bike will feel light as a feather when I ride again. I think the fat slick tires look so cool, and I can tell they roll smoother than the knobby tires. For me, I noticed a 2/3 mile per hour increase.
Obviously these are road tires and are not intended for off road use as they are slick. They do well in light gravel, and offer great cushion on any paved surface.

I did the same thing when I bought my 2011 Cannondale F7. The Kenda Nevegal tires it came with had such an aggressive tread that made my bike difficult to ride because of the rolling resistance those tires had. I switched them out for Kenda Kiniption tires. The smoother tread made my bike so much easier to ride and since I never was going to go mountain biking on a $500 bike, I left them on and used it mainly for transportation around the city.

I basically ride a full suspension mountain bike not for trails, but urban commuting. I love the smooth ride it gives me, pot holes and uneven sidewalk slabs are a non event, I can just stay seated and pedal through it. I hate bikes where you can feel every little pebble and miniscule crack in the road, not my cup of tea.

A bit late to this thread, but I have been using Schwalbe Johnny Watts tyres on my MTB's. Run 27.5" x 2.6" on one, and 27.5" x 2.35" on another. Really good tyres, not the cheapest but good wear, not too heavy and have yet to get a puncture on any of them. They look good too, with a big knobby tread but the knobs are big and flat and roll well on pavement.

Very cool! ; I just got some Rubena V99 City Hopper Bicycle Tire with Anti-Puncture System and Reflective Sidewall (Black, 26x2.0-Inch) Tires, since my bontrager mtb tires just split down the Tread middle on the rear. I'm using my mtb as as a grocery haul and bike camping/ packing rig w both packing bags and or panniers pending feel and needs. . Any how, it's great to see there's other options out there, as I just looked for the highest rated and cheapest tire out there and landed on these Mitas tires; so fingers crossed works okay; as I'm a roadie at heart anyway. I chucked some Schwalbe Super Moto 29x2.4" on my Nukeproof Giga to help improve my fitness between trail rides. My usual Maxxis setup (F Assegai/R Minion) tyres are extremely aggressive and while they're great downhill they're a nightmare everywhere else. I wanted to get up bulk k's in between trail sessions to improve my climbs and the Super Moto are phenomenal tyres. Basically full slicks and I'm able to push out more k's for the same effort which makes the endurance training a lot more fun. Whereas I used to only do a couple of laps of my local area I can now ride all day. I got them on special for £22 (USD$28) each instead of the RRP £55 (USD$68) so if you keep your eye out you can pick up some at a bargain price too.

The picture is a bit deceiving - there is WAY less space in the center of the frame than it shows. The suspension connection takes up the entire thing. So I needed to attach my battery on the bottom of the frame and my controller on the top. Instructions for assembly were lacking but honestly it wasn't too hard to figure out even though I have very little bike knowledge. Watched some youtube videos on adjusting the disk brakes but that was it. Still, I am loving it and very happy with the purchase.

Twenty percent of my riding is on gravel roads. I am not in it for speed or for thrills and jumps. Just a 2 hour evening ride every other day. High speed happens though because of the rider, the bike and mountain hills. From my experience I am beginning to think that tire pressure and width has more to do with traction and stability than tread design; except in sand and mud. Slicks only being good for pure speed and light weight on dry and clean roads. I have not had problems off road without knobbies but I do avoid mud and sand. I am currently looking to try a deep groove tire with a solid center strip to provide low rolling resistance. The grooves to provide bite through the layer of sand at the intersections on some of our rural roads.

650b or 27.5 (same thing) is the diameter. The next number is how fat, or chunky the tire is. Road bike tires generally have smaller (narrow) tires, while MTB usually come with fat/chunky tires. I think you should be fine going from 2.2 to a 2.3, it's not a huge difference, and if it does not fit, most places will allow you to return within the return date, you can check the sales staff. I purchased them from Bike Barn, they had a sale at the time. I forgot to mention this in the video, but you can pump them up to 50 PSI.

What tires are these? How are they holding up now?
@saulfmoran

Specialized, they make them for their ebikes. Good so far, very comfortable and better less rolling resistance compared to the knobby tires that came on my bike.

I purchased them at Bike Barn a while back. They are Specialized, these tires are used on their Ebikes. There are other brads and styles you can find online or bike shop.

There are a few options and it depends on what you want. The slick tires I purchased from Bike Barn. I wanted slick tires that rolled smooth on pavement, but I did not want them to look "skinny". This is why I chose the Specialized Nimbus Sport. I also purchased the Continental Cubierta Double Fighter III (long name) from Amazon, but unfortunately they were lost in the transit. Decide what you are looking for, then do a search, i'm certain you can find something that meets your needs. Good luck.

I think your best bet is getting a pair of 29' wheels.. 2.3 - 2.4 tyres.. probably something more hybrid. I have a Roscoe too. But I've also got an old' mountain bike with continental speed kings on it.. which are XC tyres racing tyres slim 2.1 and pretty nobby. So neither bike is really fitted out for urban use at the moment. So my choice is to either get 29" wheels to swap out on the Roscoe when I wanna go urban. Or turn the other bike into something more hybrid. Thinking the later is the best and cheapest option because it'd only probably require a change of tyres. But if you just have the Roscoe I'd consider the set of 29" wheels. They'll be quicker and It'll be easier for you to change wheels for different purposes rather than to change tyres everytime you wanna go off road. I know it's a bit of an expensive option, but practical in the long run. If you insisted on just getting tyres, well we have 40 ml rims on the Roscoe.. So no idea what kind of hybrid or semi slick would work on plus size rims! . Love to hear what you've seen for it?

It's better than MTB tyres but you will not benefit as you should, cause i bet that they are heavy and with big contact area You should try 32mm or maximum 38mm tyres, with slick middle path

Well, technically there is no gender specific bike, if it fits it fits. I actually purchased this bike from a buddy of mine. My first road bike was a used bike, Liv by Giant. I didn’t know at the time, but the bike fit perfect
