A buddy of mine was at a train show in Montréal Canada recently and found this super bizarre HO scale Athearn Canadian Pacific DD40 diesel locomotive being sold for one Canadian dollar. He figured it would be something I'd want to add to my collection so he bought it. This locomotive clearly hasn't run in quite a long time since there was no motor and many drive components were missing. Today I try to see if we can make it run again.

Athearn sold these for a long time. Single motor and with two motors decorated for a number of railroads that never had them. Never had them because EMD never built the DD40. EMD did build the nearly identical DD35 for Union Pacific and the DD35 cabless booster for Union Pacific and Southern Pacific.

@@tommurphy4307 I personally haven't had many issues with Athearn locomotives aside from a couple of Ready to Roll products from the mid to late 2000s, but even then, it's mainly just the headlight bulb wires making contact with the drive shafts and causing some noise and binding issues when they go around curves. Haven't had any issues with the blue box and current Genesis models! Same goes with Scaletrains as well, both brands have performed exceedingly well!

Super. I 💙 double diesels. ALCOs C-855, GEs U-50 and U-50C, and EMDs DD-35, DD-40, and DD-40AX are right up there, but my favorite locomotive is the Lima (Baldwin) twin V-8 powered Tr-2500 center cab diesel transfer locomotive. After reading all 254 comments, some of which had good info, and some not so much, just so everyone knows, this is a DD-40, technically a DD-40 A (Cab) unit, a model EMD had plans for, but never managed to sell even one to any railroads at all. (I wonder who Athearn knew back then?) An interesting fact is the first DD-35 was a cabless unit, and not called a DD-35B until after the cab (DD-35A) unit was produced, and then only by modelers. It was designed to work between two GP-35s, and the locomotives were officially known as DD-35 and DD-35A units and sold to the UP and SP, but they apparently forgot that "B" meant cabless. For the rivet counters, and easy spotting for the rest of us, the DD-40 and DD-40AX units have three large cooling fans for each diesel engine, while the DD-35 has two large and one small cooling fan for each diesel engine. (Edit: Also a dynamic brake fan for each set of trucks.) After EMD upped the GP-40s V-16 diesel to make 3,300 horsepower and designed and installed a safety cab and Dash 2 electrical components for the double diesel, UP ordered a bunch, and the Union Pacific DD-40AX 6,600 horsepower double diesel safety cab "Centennials" were born, which meant that the DD-40 was history. I much prefer the DD-35B unit as the roofline still looks like two GP-35s stuck together, without the extra large hump over the radiators, like the DD-35A, DD-40, and DD-40AX have. As to the one versus two motor comments, this locomotive was offered with a choice of one or two motors. (I'm not sure if non-motor DD-40 dummy units were available + who would buy a non powered version of the largest road diesel available?) Trust me, one motor was adequate to pull almost any model railroads entire inventory of rolling stock quite easily, but two motors added more horsepower, probably satisfied some egos, and allowed the locomotive to be heavily weighted, allowing you to pull 100 car trains without stressing the motors as much. Thanks again, an excellent video, and hello from the Tracy Mountain Railway in Colorado. 💙 T.E.N.

$1 is a steal for one of those. Nice ones are more like $50 US. Looks like a super early example, the handrail stancions have the stamped ends with holes. Those go away somewhere in the late 60s. Athearn based these on some EMD drawings for proposed models, is why it's a model of an engine that didn't get made. The UP Centennial is close, but has the wide cab.

It's almost identical to the EMD DD35. The major difference being all the same size rooftop radiator fans in the middle of the long hood and the dynamic brake blisters. The EMD DD35 was two GP35 diesels back to back on a single frame with a common cab. It lacked the flaring at the middle roof line.

I am 99.999% sure that actually is a the DD35. I was recently buying a bunch of broken locomotives on ebay and there were two sellers selling non running a "DD40" Not really looking to much into it I decided to throw an offer towards both sellers figuring one may accept my offer. Well both did so I wound up with what I thought would be two DD40s, however when I actually got both in hand I realized one is like an inch shorter than the other and the cabs were slightly different. Doing a bit a research I realized the slightly shorter one must actually be the DD35 which is identical body style wise to this one he just restored. on the DD40 there is no over hang over the windshield.
@williammcgeehan3424
@williammcgeehan3424 2 жыл бұрын
@@SpaceCowboyfromNJ It has two extra radiator fans on top that the DD35 didn't have. It's a concept model that EMD never built. They probably didn't build it because of the problems they had with the GP-35 and the DD35. The DD35 boosters were built before the DD35 with the cabs. The boosters didn't have the flared out radiator screens in the middle of the long hood and they were literally two GP-35s back to back on one frame with no cab.

As far as the motor, Athearn used the flywheels that were offered in the SW7 and S12 in both dual motor and single motor configurations with matching shafts to reach the worm gears. Also, the trucks are both the old and new style with the metal side frame truck being the old style.

Harrison you seem to be taking the Vice Grip Garage approved method for dealing with problems ( though with model trains rather than cars) and do the right thing and pretend we didn't see that. On behalf of VGG Nation I'll dub you an honorary feller. I used to dismantle those old blue box Athearns and give them the Harrison treatment right out of the box with a proper lube and white grease treatment, run a file over the gear teeth faces to smooth and mold separation lines and solder wire to replace the pick up clip and I got those 30 dollar BB Athearn locos running as quiet and creep speeds on par with 100 120 dollar Stewart locos. Evergreen plastics makes styrene rod of various sizes and one of the reasons why when I build models keep the sprues ( at least a couple old model boxes full) as there was more than a couple times I either dug out some Evergreen or sprue segment, notched a key in the piece to match the keyway in the worm gear coupling and MacGyvered a new drive shift. Being a pack rat helps. Used to pick up washers and bits of junk for weighing down rail cars and picked up 3 of these huge honking washers figuring one day I might need to do a special car or something but never did. Two weeks ago I'm building my late wife's Enterprise A kit and in a bone head move epoxy the darn thing sideways to the way it supposed to fit to the base and is now nose heavy, after a D'OH!! that would make Homer Simpson proud and some extra choice spicy words I dimly remembered something about those washers, dug out my old train tool box and in a move that would have made Scotty proud saved the Enterprise by counter balancing the base with the washers. Never throw anything away like that. Yep an old Burlington DD40 by those catwhiskers on the nose.

As several here have already pointed out, this is probably one of Athearn's most famous "foobies" - a model of a locomotive that was never built. EMD did offer a DD35, which was basically two GP35's on a single frame, with 4-axle trucks, and designed only as a cabless unit to be mated up with cab locomotives. SP had three. UP ordered them and liked them so much they requested EMD create a cab version, and thus the DD35A was born. EMD considered a double diesel version of the GP40 and it would have looked similar to what Athearn built from the concept drawings, but nobody ever ordered them and they were never built. Instead EMD created 36 of the impressive DD40AX, with its distinctive wide-nose cab. The first units were delivered on time for the publicity events surrounding Union Pacific's centennial celebration in 1969, hence their nicknames as Centennials. Athearn offered their DD40 in several road names, including CB&Q. The presumption that the unit in the video started life in Q livery appears correct. Somebody totally trashed the unit in trying to convert it to a CP dummy unit. Getting it to run was near miraculous as it was pretty much good for nothing but parts. The motor is incorrect. The powered models were originally sold (if memory serves) with the option of one or two motors. Neither were flywheel equipped. A Google image search for "Athearn DD40 diagram" will yield hits showing the exploded view parts drawings of the models. Athearn products are now manufactured overseas and they ceased all marketing and support for the old "blue box" models a few years ago to focus on their RTR lines, so finding replacement parts may be near impossible.

Hard to believe this locomotive was designed to go around 18" curves with truck mounted couplers. I remember the originals models had no flywheels, but we're available with single or dual motors, and retailed for $19.98, single motor. That may sound ridiculously cheap, but my first Athearn F-7A was $10.98 ($2 more for "super-geared"), and my rubber band drive "Hustler" was $6.98. My local hobby shop had a DD-40 in Great Northern "Big Sky Blue." I never acquired it, but it looked great in those colors.

The axel set you mentioned is not necessarily broken off, it might have wheels from two different generations. Athearn never upgraded the DDs to inside bearings, so you might have an outside bearing wheel on one side and an inside bearing on the other. The peice you removed was a support for the long drive shaft that they used on the single motor models, basically the same as a band drive long shaft.

This is super cool to see you rebuild this thing I did stuff like this whenever I had mine unfortunately most of my HO scale locomotives were junk or extremely old and out of maintenance horribly I did not possess the skills at the time being very young to properly do maintenance and revive these things so the ones that didn't work or I did not take care of very well ended up failing I'm afraid and I ended up having to cannibalize some of them I actually made a locomotive with two drives at one point it was one of my favorites because it was basically a Frankenstein but it worked so good though I did an amazing job for the time at least I thought I did it was built out of basically a bunch of broken scrap parts on the outside it still looked all right but on the inside it was a total mess but it worked really good I'd love to see you install a second motor would be pretty cool

Hello Harrison enjoy the show; if you take a file and gently file the soldering tip, you can restore it just be careful you don't break the tip. By removing the old soldier residue the soldering gun will work better.

sandpaper or scotch-brite cookies won't break the tip like a brittle file can.

Use a damp sponge to wip excess solder off the tip.

Glad to see that you were able to get it running Harrison. However, I think you have it wired or setup backwards. If I'm correct, once you put it with another unit you will find that they will run in different directions. To correct this, rotate the trucks 180% or put the rear truck in the front and front in the rear.

There is a real locomotive of a DD40X and it was a Union Pacific locomotive and there is a good amount of history about this style of locomotive.

You can get higher wattage tips for the iron. I think the one with a little broader one works best for me. If the Heathkit Company was still around you could get great soldering experience putting some kits together. I even built a television from them.

Yes. If it is an Ungar brand, the actual tip unscrews from the handle and you can install several different tips all different wattages. If you work on sensitive electronic items the smaller the wattage is. If you will send me your email I will send you photos/ video of the one I have used for over 40 years.
