They just might do it. After two sneaky wins over their Celtic cousins, Wales delivered a jam-soaked masterclass to put a record points total past England. So how did Wales do it, and where does this bizarre game leave England?
If you've enjoyed any of the channel's content, you can also support Squidge Rugby on Patreon by visiting / squidgerugby , so I can consider the two XXL pizzas I ate whilst pulling an all-nighter to finish this an investment.

Gonna be honest, I was outraged at the Biggar->Adams try at the weekend and was pissed off. But having seen this other angle, I am less annoyed at the refereeing decision and more annoyed at how slow it took the England backs to set after the huddle. I think these angles actually show the context alot better

I’ve been saying it all weekend. England did it in one of the World Cup warm up games vs Wales too. That one was worse because Biggar took the pen quick from his own 60 yard line and then after north got tackled he kicked it to Adams on the other wing and they scored. England hadn’t set for either of them. It’s a serious problem which England haven’t addressed. I don’t think there is a player in the world more accurate than Biggar with the cross field kick. Adams, Williams and North would beat 90% of wingers too. Haven’t seen LRZ to know how good he is. Surely if your Eddie Jones your telling your team to alway look for Biggar to do a cross field. I think it’s the reason he didn’t react much. He knows it’s an issue for England. I’d be very suprised now if France and Ireland don’t look to exploit it

It's a shame that it took so long, though, and for it to come out via a KZfaq poster (no disrespect to Squidge, who is superb). On the day, the Beeb focussed on 'how it would feel if it happened to you' over proper analysis at half-time, and at the end of the match showed a sequence that I thought showed quite a long period between Gauzere signalling time back on and then blowing his whistle. They did show the whole thing from one camera without any vision mixing or editing on Scrum V on Sunday, and I came away from that thinking that Gauzere had probably assumed that Wales would kick for goal, then had a bit of a panic after Biggar sauntered over and asked to be told when the clock was back on (whether he intended England to huddle with tea and sandwiches or not, that's what they've done, and Gauzere can't warn them that Biggar is planning a move, or allow them to completely reset because that wouldn't be fair on Wales as the side with the penalty, so he gave them a sort of warning then blew his whistle and then shouted 'time on' in case they hadn't got the hint). What that angle didn't show, though, was what England were doing during all of this as it was a telephoto shot of Biggar and Gauzere together. Farrell is also in shot then disappears to speak to his side, and there isn't a long time for him to (it is implied) call his team in and speak to them. You get the impression that the England left is covered when the kick is taken because May has been slow to come in, while cover on the right has run in at Farrell's summons, barely seconds before the ref has called play on. This new angle gives a far better understanding of what happened: England huddle while Farrell is being spoken to by the ref; Ford, not Farrell does the tactics talk and supervises the drinks break, and to his credit, Farrell's 'cut the daft penalties' speech is as short and to the point as you would expect it to be (the previous footage implies that he would barely have started speaking after summoning the drinks and gathering the team, which makes it look like Gauzere has waited for England to be at their most compact before screwing them over). It solves the question of why Farrell acted as if he thought he had been invited to take a time out (he didn't: Ford called the huddle and Farrell was as brief as you would expect him to be) and how England managed to get drinks onto the field in the (presumed) 10 seconds between Farrell being released by the ref to call his team in and speak to them and play restarting (as above: the drinks came on well before Farrell spoke to the referee, and England were under the posts for far longer than is implied). Interestingly, Farrell comes out of this better than he did in the previous interpretation (he doesn't initiate the tea party; he does have the brief word that you would expect him to have) and Ford worse (it's his assumption that Biggar will kick for goal that leaves England stranded, and while he does react faster than Watson, it's to cover his own mistake, not Farrell's). Gauzere also looks better when you see it like this: On Scrum V it looks like he's erred in implying that Wales will have to kick at goal (so Farrell will be fine calling the team in) then when Biggar comes over looking for the quick move, he panics because there's no way he can tell Biggar no, or warn England, without penalising Wales, and so choses the lesser evil of screwing England over rather than Wales (because England infringed). Here, it looks perfectly reasonable. Ford calls them in while Farrell speak to the ref (mistake, but recoverable if England are on their toes or if any of them spots that Biggar is up to something). Farrell relays a sensibly brief instruction, England do break up before time goes back on, and the referee gives Farrell time to do what he asked him to do and then get back into position provided they are sharp like May rather than slow like Watson.

I KNEW you were going to talk about Biggar talking to the ref, Squidge! Called it when watching the replay at half time. As an England fan, I think it's a clever little psychological move from Biggar to manufacture the try. He could've waited there silently but he calmly asks him to tell him when time is back on and subconsciously makes Gauzere blow his whistle earlier than he perhaps would've done otherwise and thus creates the try. Really clever.

My main fear is that this is a false dawn for Wales. The only games they had won before this six nations under Pivac were against Italy and Georgia. They have won games this championship but no one can deny they have had some luck along the way. I'm still not certain atm if Pivac will be doing Wales many favours before the next World Cup. If they stay where they are now then their performance this championship speaks for itself but if not then it will be telling. Half Irish and Welsh fan btw.

Luck evens out eventually. Plus this Welsh team does something I've never seen a Welsh team do - they take every chance that comes their way. I'm confident that Wales are slowly building into a very decent team, with the biggest squad of potential players I've ever seen Wales enjoy. So we have depth, we have a half-decent pack, a line-out, a scrum, a beautifully balanced back-row - that will get even better when Ellis Jenkins is on one of the flanks - and, for the first time in the twenty first century, we have a replacement front row that is at least as good at scrummaging as the players they replace. We've two young, brilliant wingers, and I'd love to see Zammit at full-back eventually. His speed is such that a line-break would practically guarantee a try.

when watching the game live, I, and this hurts to say as a Scotsman, felt England got the worse of the ref in the first 30 mins. however, looking back, and with the aid of this wonderful breakdown, I can happily announce normal practice can resume. Apart from the kick *cough knock on cough* i dont feel like England were too unfairly treated. England have a problem i feel where at every opportunity (primarily at penalties when things are looking grim for them) they like to huddle up and talk about their issues. With the ref telling Farrell to talk to his team, they once again took this as permission to make the game wait for them to finish their conference. Wales got to punish this. When the ref tells a captain to talk to his team, he doesnt mean, time off take all the time you need. he means stop fouling the other team and have a quick word to tell them to stop it (ie, yell STOP IT across the pitch with some *calm it down* hand motions). England know wales have a penalty, Wales have the ball, Wales are on the 22, Wales are SET. At what point does this make England think that time off is for them to have a chat. Farrells job isnt to hand hold his team and have bi quarterly team meetings, he is in practice the teams voice to the ref, its his job to relay the refs message as efficiently and concisely as possible at a time when the game allows. Its Wales penalty, time is back on when THEY are ready to go, not England. Asking the ref when times on tells him, were good to go. oof this went on a bit. Wales are still jammy sods.

The issue is consistency. If this is what the referee felt, then he should've said something. The idea you can reasonably do something like this without giving the captain a warning that the huddles are taking too long is stupid.
@dooker15
@dooker15 3 жыл бұрын
@@Heardyousmile I feel you've missed the point, or I haven't said it very well. but as a side note, i believe this was their first huddle, so its not that the ref is punishing them for taking too long, or decided not to tell them. its not the refs job to manage a team. (there was a game italy vs england , where the italians where using a rule to deny england the right to ruck for the ball, i forget it exactly, but the english team didnt know what to do legally, and when asking the ref he said it wasnt his job to teach them the rules), similar to that here, its not the refs job to make them play the game, England are perfectly entitled to take a 40 minute huddle if they want, provided they arent holding up the game clock (ie not kicking off after a try is scored). its not the refs job to tell them "guys wales are about to take a tap and go, best get set". as squidge noted, other games and refs have actually given less time after telling captains to talk to their players before the other team took their penalty. As international (and i would expect club level players to know) taking a huddle in these circumstances wasnt the time or place. Furthermore, he didnt blow time on beacuse they were in a huddle, it was because there was no reason for time to be off any longer. no one was injured, receiving treatment, no substitutions were being made. Bigger asking for time to be back on shows that the ref was actually being kind giving them any time at all. time wasnt off for england to have a chat, it was off for the ref to reprimand the English captain. its then largely at wales discretion as to when the game resumes, at the will of the ref. England know this. taking a huddle infront of their try line while wales are setting up was actually stupid. Farrell complaining that the ref had to give them time to set is wrong, he doesnt, thats the point of a tap penalty and giving the carrier 10 metres before he can be tackled. hopefully ive said it better. but basically England shouldnt have been in a huddle, and its not the refs job to tell them not to be. (Also consistency in this try score wasn't an issue, consistency to what, time goes back on when theres no impedance to the game such as an injured player, and he started the game again when there was nothing stopping play from commencing, and as squidge noted other refs and games have given less time in the past)
@dooker15
@dooker15 3 жыл бұрын
I will however say as my personal opinion, or if I was a world class ref what I would have done, is that the ref in this particular instance perhaps should have given England a verbal warning to get set. There are only two reasons for this. The first is that when time was called of and the ref talked to Farrell he told him to talk to his team and then didn't immediately put time back on, however I feel this is a weak reason as ive detailed in my previous comments. The other reason, which I'd say is stronger, is that he should have called out for the water carriers to get off the pitch, then maybe less than 5 seconds later called time on. This is something refs do, they will call "water off" or even tell the water carriers bit come on the pitch at all, given that he allowed the water carriers on, he maybe should have warned England but only by telling the water carriers to get off. However I still stand by my above comments. It's not the refs job to manage England and tell them how to set up for a Welsh penalty.
@Heardyousmile
@Heardyousmile 3 жыл бұрын
@@dooker15 If there was no reason for ENG to have a huddle then there was no reason to stop the clock. Either the clock shouldn't have been stopped in the first place or the penalty shouldn't have been allowed without allowing ENG to set. Both are the responsibility of the referee. It's may not be the ref's job to manage the teams, but it is his job to manage the game and this inconsistency in his decision making is what caused the try. ENG had every right to expect to be told when time was back on and be given enough time to set before the kick. I also find it a little funny that your reference to a similar situation in ENG v ITA literally prompted a change to the offside rule because it wasn't in the spirit of the game.

On the Biggar/Adams try: the point being missed by everyone is the law on kicking says "The intention to kick is signalled by the arrival of the kicking tee or sand, or when the player makes a mark on the ground." Once this is done, you are obliged to kick, and can't change your mind. You can clearly see Neil Jenkins make his way over to Dan Biggar to give him the kicking tee....at that point Biggar sends him away, but it's too late: the tee has already been brought to the kicker. The debate around time on/off should be irrelevant? Regardless, if you turn time off it's convention to wait for both sides to be evenly matched up/set before resuming gameplay. Regardless of how quickly or slowly that may be, conventionally they don't turn time back on until there's parity between both sides. 'Catching the opposition napping' is something that is the domain of when time is still running. No rule was technically broken at all, but long standing convention wasn't honoured. I also think there's a lot of hypocrisy around the way Farrell spoke to the ref. Go and look at how Gareth Thomas spoke to the referee after that infamous incident of "have we got time for a lineout" when the ref them blew to end the game after kicking to touch. Thomas' behaviour was 100x worse: chasing the referee off the pitch and waving his arms and hands inches from the referees face, but a lot of my fellow country are more than happy to justify that behaviour, simply because he was 'one of our boys'. I'm saying this as a Welshman-England played appallingly, and we can always do the 'ifs and buts'-a win is a win. The second half England lost the game completely for themselves. But by the same token I can't help but feel if you go down by 14 points that clearly shouldn't have stood in the first 20-30 minutes you're hardly going to just 'rise above it' and it completely changes your discipline and attitude for the rest of the game. Going in at half time 14-3 up without dodgy refereeing has a completely different impact on your mentality to going in 17-14 down due to poor refereeing. As a Welshman this feels like a hollow win; one that was decided by unjust calls that went our way within the first 30 minutes. I'd almost prefer to have a rematch and lose than sit with this one.

As an England fan I'm so frustrated at how we are constantly hindering ourselves with stuff that is well within our control to fix but we're not. 1) Jones picking off form players and refusing to look beyond the favourites. We have plenty of depth at 8, 9, 10 and reasonable alternatives at 12 and 15 but we wouldn't know as the favourites are undroppable and the other talent simply won't get a chance. 2) The endless fucking penalties. For the love of god just have ONE game where you don't get into the double figures! The stupid thing is it's not like they can't do it. When we cleaned up our act, we caught right up with Wales. Then we just went back to braindead mode. This is killing England more than anything else IMO 3) The players just switch off too easily and it's happened too often. Their psychology is completely messed up, there is no killer instinct and they completely go to sleep too frequently, more than any other team. As professional sportsmen who should have had it drummed into their heads repeatedly to never turn your back or switch off ever, it's staggering how often they do it.

This shows that that isn't true. I'd love to see Nige Owen's reaction to this angle, and whether he thinks England were in fact given time (I agree with Squidge that they were, but they didn't all use it; I suspect that Nigel Owens doesn't think that play should wait for England to be ready before it is restarted, just that they should have time to get ready).

I dont think it does at all. Dont be fooled by the fact that May got to his wing. Mays movement is irrelevant. What an individual player chooses to do is not relevant to the fact that, as time was off the ref should have treated both captains fairly by giving them both warning that time was soon to come back on and getting the nod from both that they have acknowledged his warning and are ready. That's how a kick off starts. Where is the rule that says when some players leave a huddle and go back to their positions the ref starts a count down in his head for time on? Courtesy and good game management dictate that he should have alerted the players still huddling, on both sides as Welsh players had their backs turned too, to prepare themselves. What the extra footage actually shows is how many welsh water carriers are on the pitch in positions that are deemed as interfering with play. At the very least the ref should have told both teams clearly to prepare for time to be back on so that the non playing personnel could leave the field.

The first two Welsh tries will be debated forever by some - there are certain England fans who would still claim they were robbed no matter what the score was or how much better the opposition were. Even if the two tries were disallowed, Wales would still have got another three for a kick in front of the posts instead of the kick to the corner. What goes around, comes around. I'm sure England weren't criticising the ref for not penalising the mid-air tackle on Biggar that led to their try last year... Regardless of the two disputed tries, Wales were the better side by a reasonable margin, not that it mattered as England were intent on self destruction through crass indiscipline, an amateur lack of awareness and surprising complacency. This was clear from the penalty count and also when they switched off yet again for Hardy's try. Wales were more street-smart, clinical and focused and thoroughly deserved the win. England were lucky not to see yellow on several occasions, especially the normally dependable Itoje and it could have been more if LRZ had got a kinder bounce after he'd gassed May. The result was more than fair, as was the case in Wales' two previous games - you can only play what's in front of you. Bring on Italy.
