My advice: buy the watch you want on the secondary market while also putting in for it at the AD. Maintain your relationship with the AD and when you get the watch you desire, sell the one you purchased from the grey market.

I went into an AD for the first time ever a few weeks ago, told them what I was looking for, and chatted up the Sales Associate. I got a call the very next week for the Datejust 41 with Rhodium dial that I wanted. She said she liked me, so she skipped a few people and called me first. Left them a 5 star review because they deserved it. They immediately asked if I wanted to get put on a list for a sports model. So now I'm patiently waiting for my Batman.

I have watched a ton of videos like this. I think that this one is spot on, for a smaller market. In NYC or LA, forget it, go grey. I would add that to be on their mind requires regular monthly follow up in a non-annoying way. Also, when writing your on-line review include a cool picture of your Rolex. I did this when I got my Sub and that photo has had over 50,000 views. When the store manager thanked me for my review I showed him how many views there were and he was blown away!

Hi Chris, Very enjoyable video as always and great advice 👍. I actually think it's good to have wait a few months or even a year or so providing you are genuinely climbing the list. It makes getting a rolex more special than if you could walk straight in and get one. Besides if you could just walk in and get one the average man would still only buy one every year or maybe two years anyway.

My AD told me they received more Rolex watches in 2021 than ever before…🤨 it’s still such BS how you have to kiss up to an AD to be deemed worth enough to spend your hard earned money. It is what it is but it sucks, especially for new enthusiasts. I guess the positive thing here is enjoying the chase/journey. It wouldn’t be nearly as fun if you could buy all the watches you wanted in one shot.

I recently went in to my AD for the first time and told him my story. No spend history but we connected very well. I told him what I was looking for. As I was leaving he told me a day and time that I should come in and that they might have something for me if I come in then. This sounds really good. A real mensch.

I bought my wife a vintage datejust last year. We brought it into the Rolex store in Santa Monica to get it sized. I inquired about getting on the waitlist for a Sub never expecting to get a call. 4 months later he called me saying he had one for me. Picked it up yesterday. I had no purchase history with them either. I think the fact that I went in with a vintage watch let him know I was not a flipper, so your advice in that regard is on the money.

All of those things actually do work. Proof is I only started building that relationship with my AD under 2 years ago (well into the start of the current Rolliemania). Happy to say I’ve since acquired from them a 39mm Explorer, the previous gen Explorer II as well as a the new sub just before the turn of the year. I had to go out of state to try and get the ones I wanted, and did so in May of last year. Got my first Rolex ever in July from one out of state AD after a 6 week wait, got my second one in October from a different out of state AD after a two month wait, and my third one in November from the same AD where I got my first after 4 month wait. The only things I ever bought from them are those watches. I found that doing the legwork, being a nice person and truly being interested in watches and talking watches goes a long way. I don't feel entitled to anything and I'm a pretty nice and friendly person who loves to talk watches, so I enjoy the process.

That's interesting to hear. I thought my AD was the only one not getting any Rolex's. My AD only saw two Rolex's in 2021. A sea dweller and a lady datejust. For the buyer that just walks into an AD and the sales person says, we just received this sea dweller in yesterday. The buyer must think they fell into the sugar bowl. My AD said they get calls from all over the world. The store takes no credit cards over the phone, no sales over the phone, if you fly in from out of state. You've wasted Your airfare. If your local and pop in once a month your the person that will get the watch. It may take a year. However, you'll get it. I asked my manager if he wanted to get a coffee one of these days? But let me pay for my own coffee. I don't want favouritism. The manager said no I'm buying. So there you go. Hope my GMT or SUB comes in this year.

Anybody thinking the grey market for sports watches is going to drop is dreaming. Rolex like it the way it is. The only word they care about is exclusivity and a reduction in the grey market does not sit well with that, no matter how daft the prices are. They just got away with a 10% price hike and no customer batted an eyelid. That is because they are selling a $10k watch that people perceive to be worth £20k. Remember, they sell 1 million watches a year, they don't flip one. They have people queueing at ADs for watches that were hard to sell 5 years ago.
