So the SONY a7rIV (a7r mark 4) was just announced. Even though I really wanted the Sony a7riii, I skipped out on it and have been eagerly waiting on the a7rIV to arrive. And now that it’s finally here, I gotta say it looks IN-CRED-IBLE.

I don’t know how Sony keeps cramming more and more tech into their cameras, but they do and I’m definitely not complaining about it. One of the biggest things that stuck out in my mind about the camera was its 61 megapixel sensor. That’s almost a 50% increase from the a7riii and is approaching medium format territory, and in some cases is well into medium format territory in terms of megapixels. Comparing the Hasselblad X1D at 50 megapixels, for example.
So it seems like a no-brainer that Sony would market this camera as a direct competitor to the larger, more expensive medium format cameras, just with a much smaller price tag. Which they are indeed doing.
And that’s kind of what I wanted to talk about in this video: is the Sony a7rIV the beginning of the end for medium format? Because, if you can get more or less the same quality of image with a full frame camera, why pay the extra thousands or tens of thousands of dollars for medium format which is going to be much larger and much slower?
Which leads us to the crux of this video: (in my opinion) if the Sony a7rIV can beat the cons of medium format, match or exceed the pros of medium format AND keep its lower price tag, then it may signal the beginning of the end for those types of cameras. What are the pros of medium format? Let’s get into them.
