WH is not just a spot for drunks. You get the whole strata of society truckers, nurses, students, retail workers professionals, senior citizens families et al. The food is amazing. They even have a weather monitoring system that the U.S. federal emergency management agency monitors to gauge the severity of extreme weather events and their effect on the intrrstate highway system. The majority of WH locations are on the interstate highway system exit and entry ramps.

Very true, and I occasionally stopped for a bite on the way home from my night shift. That said, it's still a truism that WH is for drunks, same as Taco Bell for stoners. They've said it many times and it bears repeating: It's not like they don't have many of these ingredients in the UK, but the fact that it simply isn't common to prepare them in these ways or with these spices and flavors. It can be mind-blowing to many people whose palettes are not accustomed to the variety of clashing and complimenting flavors coming in at the same time.

Exactly! And from what I've gathered, UK folks think American desserts/sweets are *too* sweet. So when they do try to replicate our recipes, they lower the sugar and it doesn't quite come out the same. The same goes the other way around - I tried replicating a British Citrus Drizzle Cake and it didn't taste like cake to me, it tasted like citrusy bread. A whole society's palate can be so different, it's fascinating!

There's an Apple Butter Festival a couple of hours away in West Virginia every fall. The big competition is for best apple butter, and essentially the trophy goes back and forth every year between a couple of teams from the local senior citizens home. All of these people have been making the stuff, by hand over an open fire, for decades. After the competition people will line up for blocks to buy the teams apple butter, some by the case, and some so picky that they won't get it if it's not still warm.

Yes many Europeans don't actually understand the vast distances we sometimes travel here in the U.S. Years back while I was in Europe a 4 hour drive could easily take me through 2 or 3 countries, while that drive here might leave me still in my home state (depending upon the direction I travel). Heck twice a years I drive 6 and 1/2 hours so my wife can visit her sisters a couple of states away (we go to them twice and they come to us twice) so everyone can stay in touch. One time I even went with my best friend to see his aunt it was a 22 hour drive (so we traded off driving).

I would say that the closest to A Waffle House would have been the Chick-fil-a Dwarf House down on the southside, the very first Chick-fil-a restaurant ever! Open 24/7 in Hapeville, Ga., built to service Ford workers and Delta Airlines personnel, one side of the restaurant was standard Chick-fil-A take out service, BUT the other side was a "cook to order" Diner. They had the same decor, the same food, the same kind of customer, always jam packed at 3:30 in the morning, 24 hours every day of the week except Sundays...plus they made better waffles. but recently they broke it all down and put in this new factory fresh store...Waffle House became my goto only after they did away with the old way there, that one was the King!...

the simplest (not entirely accurate) explanation of *_APPLE BUTTER :_* get yourself some apple sauce. start cooking it. add cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, mace, ginger, or other spices that you might like. cook it down to a thick paste that is the texture of slightly warm (not melted) butter. whip it even smoother in a food processor. strain it through a very fine sieve. enjoy it on toast, pancakes, waffle, roast pork, or damn near anything else. sometimes i will just eat a spoon or two out of the jar.

Wife of the South African here. (As you could probably guess from the last name.) We live in the heart of Waffle House country. In the US, neither waffles or pancakes are sweets. They are breakfast items. If you want them sweet, you add syrup. If you don't want them sweet, then you leave the syrup off. And Waffle House is not a place for sweets. Nor for that matter is the international house of pancakes aka IHOP. It's a place where you can go and get diner food, like all day breakfasts, hamburgers, grilled cheese, etc. It's open 24 hours, and they are ubiquitous off American highways. So if you're traveling overnight, they are absolute heaven. But the other crowd that tends to be there are drunks. And college kids. A surprising amount of kids from universities. My husband swears that there are no better hash browns around than the ones at Waffle House. You can get them a variety of ways. My husband usually tries a different way each time. He's never complained about any of them. So if you're in the US, especially if you're out late at night, it might be worth a stop. Now personally, I prefer either Denny's or IHOP, which you can often find also off highways and open 24 hours. (IHOP is a lot less likely to be 24 hours since COVID, but you can still find it on weekends.) To me Waffle House is okay but kind of greasy. Now if it's during the day, stop at Cracker Barrel hands down. Better food. Better prices. And a much better clientele.

Don't let the names of the restaurants make your decision.....always take a look at the menu and you can move on to the next place if you don't see what you want. IHOP (International House of Pancakes), Village Inn, Waffle House, Perkins, and other places known for breakfast, all have menus for around the clock. Usually the draw for them is that you can get breakfast at any time of the day or night. I live in a village in bush Alaska where our only restaurant is a pizza place. So when my family picks me up from the airport after I've been flying for 24 hours to go visit them, they know our first stop has to be one of these restaurants. The first thing I want when I arrive, regardless of the time, is a full breakfast with basically everything these guys just ate. LOL But my best tip for traveling (I travel a lot and have visited nearly every state, Canada, Japan, & Mexico) is to not go to the chain restaurants unless it's one you just have to try. I like to go to small little towns, especially when I'm traveling in rural America, where I can meet local people, get their advice on the best hole-in-the-wall, ma & pa kind of restaurants. Then ask the locals or the waitress what they recommend, or what they are known for. In the south you'll nearly always find a BBQ/TexMex place that has a specialty. On the great plains they have the most amazing steak you'll ever eat in your life (grass fed). In the northeast they have their seafood....but lobster to die for. I don't know much about the southern west coast as I usually avoid travel to California...lol. When I have gone it's been to the city, rather than the rural areas, and you can get basically any kind of food you can imagine. You can still find the ma & pa restaurants but they are more specialized...but it's a great opportunity to try Korean BBQ, Indian, Ethiopian, German....you can find it all there.

Miami, Florida to Seattle, Washington flight time is 6 hours 40 minutes. With all the crap at the airport and showing up early for security and such, that's perhaps a 9 hour day. Driving from Miami to Seattle is 48 hours. That's without traffic or construction and without stopping. If you plan on stopping to eat, get gas, wander around a bit, and perhaps sleep, plan on a 4 day trip. For me to shop at any store besides Walmart, it's an hour and half to the big city, shopping, eating, and visiting with family... it's a whole-day affair. Up at 7am and home by 10pm. I usually do that once a month. If family's not available, I can get home by 5.

Technically waffles can be made sweet or savoury. A "basic" waffle is, at the most, mildly sweet and close to "neutral" so you can really pair it with anything. It's pretty common for many North American breakfast places (chains or independent) to offer plates that combine waffles with proteins (usually eggs, sausages, bacon and/or ham obviously) and some syrup on the side for you to add to your liking. Some people love the sweet-salty combo so they'll pour their syrup on the waffles and don't mind if it gets on their meats. Apple butter is pretty much a very cooked down apple compote/jam so it's super concentrated apple spread.

Being from south Texas I was raised on good food. There a lot of food eaten with your hands. Now I’m in West Virginia where the food is ok. Northern restaurants mislabel chicken fried steak as country fried steak. I was in a Cheddars and ordered a chicken fried steak. I was served a chicken patty instead of beef. I would love a Whataburger. The family sold the business to a Chicago company so it probably won’t be as good but would still beat the pants off of McDonalds or Wendys.

In America, If you start at a far north or south point on the east or west coast and drive diagonally to the other coast it would take roughly 50 hours of driving at speeds on average of 65-76mph(roughly 105-121kmh) without accounting for gas stops, rests, food stops or any sightseeing you may choose to do along the way. For context the drive from Latvia near the Russian boarder to the southwest coast of Portugal clear across the continent is roughly 44hrs of driving. Just be glad I didn't add travel to/through Hawaii or Alaska to the mix LOL. Alaska is a state that, by itself, is 1/6 the size of the entire continental Europe.

I wouldn't say that, I'm an old truck driver and I use to stop in on occasions especially if you could get a big rig in close by just to eat breakfast there.

Just a pro tip..... some of the best places to get things like hambugers, sandwiches, (etc.) are bowling alleys. That old greasy spoon type cheeseburger and fries or a patty melt.... great in some grills in bowling alleys. A few comments have already said it, but I will agree about skipping some of the chain restaurants. You'll find some if the best food in smaller mom and pop or family owned type spots. Waffle House does food like you saw in the video pretty good, and so does IHOP.

If ya go to Waffle House ya gotta try the breakfast sandwiches!!! They taste like homemade only better. And while this may sound a little weird you gotta get the Sausage egg and cheese sandwich with mayo and some grape jelly. It's a true southern breakfast sandwich, when we make em we're usually deer hunting and we make em out of biscuits.

A southern staple after the bar. I always get the Super Star special. Im in Florida and when we have a hurricane coming, we just call to see if the Waffle House is still open. If not, we hit I95 and go north. Waffle House never closes!

waffle house waffles are basically the flavor of butter. the syrup is like an afterthought to the buttery waffle in my opinion. my favorite thing about waffle house is its so god darn cheap. the food can just keep coming and when they get an order wrong, if you sit beside the back door where they go to clean dishes, they might just give you what they were going to throw away, free food. i got like 10 dishes for like 30$, it is always enjoyable when i go there

I used to run three Waffle Houses in Nashville, TN. and we'd have a blast hosting you and your mates for a late-night nosh after you got tuned up at a bar. Now that my family and I have moved up north, we miss the "hot food, fast" at Waffle House.

Customer service is a way of life in America, in the north, they do it for work but, in the south, its their genes. Even when southerners insult you, they are super nice about it.

Good service is an essential element in American restaurants. Much different than Europe. BTW, Crabs have Shacks. You might like waffles and fried chicken.

Waffle House was my go to place at 2-3 AM after a night out partying 40+ years ago. 2 eggs scrambled, grits, hash browns scattered and smothered, bacon AND sausage, toast with jelly and apple butter, and a decaf coffee. Perfect meal to soak up all the alcohol. It’s also my go to place for an after surgery meal. You haven’t eaten since before midnight the night before and you’re starving. Get a meal to go, eat and then crash to sleep off the anesthesia.

There's a joke about Waffle House always being open regardless of weather. The weather department and the highway department check with Waffle House about whether conditions are bad enough for things to close.

When they say Waffle House is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, that's no joke. NOAA has an unofficial Waffle House index to tell how bad the storm damage is in an area. The Waffle House Index has three levels based on the amount of service that the restaurant can provide right after a bad storm: GREEN: Full menu; the restaurant sustained little or no damage and has full power YELLOW: Limited menu; the restaurant is running out of food or has limited power RED: The Waffle House is closed due to severe flooding or damage
