I don't own any of the vehicles in your videos, but I have been watching quite a few of them recently because I admire the good work you do by testing and not just replacing parts. I work for an autoparts store and it's really upsetting how people just come in and spend a ton of money on parts, to eventually find out that there was a simple burned connector or broken wire. I also really enjoy seeing how a good, honest, hardworking guy like yourself gets to work alongside his family, making it by. On top of all that, you are sharing these diagnostic results and repairs with the world in hopes to help a random stranger watching them. I gotta say man, you are an amazing person.

As always, great video. It cracked me up when the always reserved Mrs O sprayed her keyboard w/ vegies! I just replaced 3 door actuators on my sis-in-law's '06 Camry. I picked up some rebuilt units from an Ebayer (Actuatorsplus) for $45 ea vs nearly $300 for OEM new.

Just saw a video of Musti and his Toyota Landcruiser. Unthinkable that a car like that rusts like that in Europe. True, i am sorry to say that US cars are not seen as quality products here. It is a thin balance between profit and the ever higher demand for more technical systems. Those cost money but we aren't prepaired to pay more. In addition to that fewer petrolheads are born, we are a dying breed. Young people just want to use a car, they are not Interested in brands or proud ownership. Fixed monthly payments for the use of a car.. That's all they care about. Preferably environmental friendly. For me it is the reason I like to watch your channel, you are able to think and work towards a solution. The manufactureres and most mechanics just change out parts. Half the time I can not follow what you can do on your scope, but this way you are sure that your customer does not overpay On his maintenance. That is why other garages are forwarding clients to you. Keep doing it, and be nice to Mrs O and your princess.

Smoker here. I know this is a 3 year old video, but you're correct... Many smokers vent their windows about an inch to draw out the smoke at speed; unfortunately, it seems the rain always aggregates over the switch module and drips directly onto the switches (2012 Altima in my case). Same thing on my 2005 F-150. Water lands RIGHT on the power window switches unless you have vent-visors on the car. You can apply force, so they're in "hard mode," but this is super common. That being said, I'd bet the unlock failure at the switch was just a time-out for anti-theft purposes, as it triggers a module to perform the unlocking. Keep up the great work!

GM switches are junk. We can't get our dealer to sell us the individual switches out of the master switch, we have to by the complete unit. We repair the door harnesses at least once a week or so. I have to switch to buying the rubberized shrink tubing as I have found the normal king seems to harden to much and re- break. I'm with you if there is mo than 3 wires broke I just get a complete harness. An SMA video is a perfect way to start my weekend. God Bless you and the Family Brother.

I was a crew chief in the AF, when smoking was banned on our aircraft. Our aircraft started having less repairs. The tar was building up on the electronics, causing them to overheat. It also caused the pressurization outflow valves to stick closed.

I resolved all the problems in my Chevrolet HHR switches in 5 minutes I did not have to replace or disassemble. All I did was spray all the switches with electronic contact cleaner. Now it works like new. Sometimes mechanics over study an issue. None of the switches needed to be replaced just a little electronic contact cleaner was all that was needed.

I had an 08 Sierra 1500 with the same problem and the dealer replaced all the switches including the master on the drivers door under manufacturer warranty 2 times. I agree with you when you say cheap plastic parts on a vehicle that is so expensive. As far as the speakers are concerned, I replaced all of them in about 1 year because they sounded like crap. Keep on with your awesome videos. 👍👍

For anybody watching this with bad window switches, they don't necessarily NEED to be replaced. They're mechanical and the copper contacts get dirty/corroded. You can unclip the switch and lift up a flat rubber piece that holds contacts and simply clean them.

After the third or fourth time replacing mine I started repairing them , only cause they were laying all over the shop ..I replaced them that many times ..I lost track now ..all I can find is junk subpar parts .. I started buying whole smashed trucks , just for the certain part I wanted ..that don't work either , it all wears out at the same intervals of use , and the supplier has that down to a science ..I cannot divulge how I know this , on grounds of incriminating..

Nice diagnosis as usual. I'm a Chevy man have been my entire life. I've owned 2 new "SS" trucks, Avalanche & Traverse keep them for 10 yrs and then trade them in with @200K+ miles on them and the only part I've ever put in them is a CMP sensor & PCM under warranty in my 06 Silverado SS other than routine maintenance with all synthetics. I'll keep my 06 "Silverado SS" for a long time 200K and still going strong and they don't make them anymore plus in GA it has absolutely no rust. I work on every model & they all have issues but I am glad b/c they keep me busy. I did take my wife's Traverse in this week for a Service Campaign for intermittent seat air bag light & DTCs for "OD" high resistance where they have to solder the crimped female terminals. The service writer told me they were going to reprogram the computer to fix the 5 ohm resistance in the circuit and I told her the bulletin was to solder eliminating the extra 2 ohms resistance and she said no it'll be fixed with a reprogram. Luckily one of the mechancs I knew came over and corrected her...I hate going to service departments & listen to people tell customers a line of crap and they buy it literally! One master switch, a window switch panel, 2 door locks & 2 speakers is going to cost a pretty penny...may be worth a trip to the salvage yard!

Hi Eric I thought I would share with you some info that might put some dollars in your pocket. I am a retired gm tech and advisor of 46 yrs working for Chevrolet. I have watched a lot of your videos and think your a very Honest and diligent technician. Fyi you can buy gm factory parts and ac delco stuff from Rock Auto and pass some savings on to your customers as well make yourself better money on labor. You are a genuine guy and you truly care for your customers. I have saved thousands of dollars on my chevy's by buying gm parts from Rock Auto. If you have used them I apologize. I have never seen you order from them. I know turn around time on certain Jobs dictates you buy from local dealers and advanced auto parts which is the worst parts company bar none. I also bought a 2008 Silverado 1500 new in 2007 (which I still have), and have had the same exact problems ( speakers, actuators and switches). Also power steering and transmission lines leaking, mouldings falling off, taillight and accessory fuses blowing for no apparent reasons. Along with a whole lot of really small things which are easily fixed but really annoying. I'm not sure I would ever buy another one.

Chrysler electrical diagnostics is junk. they have never been very good at reverse engineering ford products which usually beat them to market by 2-3 years. after working at dealerships for about 3 years, I was not longer able to facilitate their bad habits. recalls dating back 15+ years. the most recalls, the worst on gas and reliability. bail outs and buy outs. gov fines for not fixing very dangerous recalls even after 2-3 attempts. it was a good learning lesson however

Longevity mileage has been good with my Chevys. My '96 S10 has 318,000 miles, but the plastic parts.......well, that's a different matter. I recently replaced a gauge bulb in the instrument panel. I knew pulling apart 20 year old plastic would be a challenge. I've had the dash apart before, but that was many years ago when the truck was much newer. Taking every precaution known to man, including heating the interior prior to disassembly, I still broke/cracked two plastic parts that required creative repairs, thus setting back the installation a full day. What should have been an easy fix, turned into a day of custom fabrications. So for, the two plastic repairs have held up, without the typical "dash rattle" we all hate to hear.

I went to the back of the closet and am now wearing my 20 year old jeans, still look like new, back when they were made in the US. From appliances to electronics to clothing to cars, you name it, everything is designed for max. profit and min. longevity. We live in a disposable society. Everything we buy and use is crap. Remember when we used to say you get what you pay for? Today, you you entitled to get out the door and that's about it.

If the window/lock switch assemblies are similar to the 2004 impala I used to own, the switches can be disassembled and cleaned. GM parts to replace the impala switches were over $100, and there was a Dorman part available too, if one wants to risk that vendor.

I've got a 2012 GMC with the same switch panels. This one, with so many bad ones, seems like it probably got caught out in the rain with all the windows down and all those untis got soaked. I have taken older Chevy ones apart and cleaned the contacts under the buttons to fix them, but these look a wee bit more complicated.

I just came across this video. You mentioned you noticed window issues with smokers.... the reason is they crack the windows to get that crappy smelly smoke out. Up... down......Up ....... down... constantly. So, now you know the rest of the story. (three years... better late than never)

Yeah. Not a big fan of power stuff. Always seems to break about 5 years after the car was made. Crank windows and manual locks may seem downmarket and poor, but as long as you don't abuse them, they frickin work 10 years later. That old 06 Frontier I traded in - its windows and locks all worked just fine. I remember my Mom's car back in the 80s, that Crown Vic - the power stuff did the same sort of thing and about in the same # of years after it was made.

Great video. I only wish I'd seen this5 years ago for my 2008 Silverado ext. My only comment for your viewers is to get the door lo door actuators from GM. I learned the hard way trying to save a few bucks buy getting Chinese replacements. Within a year I had to replace the actuator. So, The firs actuator lasted about 5/6 years from OEM, the second from China lasted less than 1 year, the third one from GM is still working as of 10/2019.

Have to agree with you on the quality of the electrical parts now. More painful is knowing they are crap, and they charge HUGE BUCKS for replacements, which are ALSO crap.

I don’t smoke but can confirm the window switched being an issue. I took my switch apart, used a pencil eraser and cleaned the contacts, reassembled and all good. $0 spent. 😀

Eric you need to amazon these door switches. My daughters car switches went bad and I got three for 10 dollars. My wife's jeep back door lock switch went out and got a new one for half the price. I know it is not on you to look but you might let the customer know if he can wait. I got both next day with amazon prime.

You can also easily test any (cone) speaker- set scope to ohms, push cone up & down- should see smooth transition between (+) and (--) through entire range of travel.

I have an 01 Tahoe and I had similar issues with the master switch as some of the controls stopped working one day. I had gone to the lake and put my boat in the water. while on the ramp I used the emergency brake. On the way home I noticed I was having the control issues. After lots of web searching and scratching my head(had not tested anything yet) I took a look into the fuse panel. all fuses were good. More head scratching and a day later I noticed the main plug for the master switch was loose. The harness had somehow found its way under the emergency brake lever and pulled the plug.

The switches can be easily opened, just a few plastic snap pins and then the "logic board" can be seen. The Contact points can then be cleaned, that's how I solved my button issues for free.

Another problem I’ve had with my Silverado doors is filling up with water. The drains plug up and if you’re parked on any sort of downslope, I’ve had them almost fill all the way up in a heavy downpour. Back doors are the worst, and if you don’t open them often, you won’t notice it.

I have about 16 IP fuse boxes sitting around my took box in the shop atm. Reason being is the integrated relay built into the IP box for the Lock and unlock for the doors. Im surprised that it wasn't that in this video. It seems like going through scrap yards daily for them

Where's the "Welcome back to another........."? ;) I wonder if the Armor-All has gotten into the switches and messed them up? You did mention there was a lot of it. My '98 Windstar rear window wouldn't close. Turned out to be a dirty switch. Drivers window has been left open and water got in.
