Stafford Castle dates back to Norman times when a fort was first built there. Over the years it was developed until it was practically destroyed in the English Civil War. Following that there was a folly built on it that also gradually fell to ruin.
Now you can walk around the grounds and see the old earthworks and visit the ruined keep. There is a small shop / museum that serves drinks and a bathroom. Parking is decent and there is a good paved path up to the castle from the car park. Although walking through the earthworks or the forest walk is a fair bit rougher.
