Even 4 years later your series is still incredibly useful for learning how to make configs in steam input, particularly on the steam deck! I hope you know that your tutorials do not go unappreciated!

It's good to hear that a lot of this is still applicable to the new Deck UI. I heard things got changed up quite a bit with that.

@@criticalinput yeah the only thing that’s really changed is the UI. All of the feature of Big Picture Mode is still there, it’s just hard to find. Besides that, have a good day!

@@criticalinput Oh man thank you for breaking these things down. I have been playing with the Dualsense for over a year on PC and I've never touch these Steam input settings because they are so difficult to understand and overwhelming. I'm setting Gyro to work on Steam and every game, aiming is just a new experience now.

The biggest difference between button pad and DPad is that the button pad allows you to press two opposites simultaneously (A+Y or X+B) and allows triple or quadruple presses while the DPad only allows at most two adjacent button presses. But to be fair, these differences rarely come up relevant.

Nicolas Lessard Thanks for this. For some reason I never found anything to support this in my research but I tested it just how and you're right, Directional Pad doesn't allow for opposite simultaneous input.

Superb series of tutorials, with a good rhythm and made with a lot of pedagogy. For the mouse wheel function, generally I simply use the wheel U and D keys on a normal press with a turbo that i can reproduce many times if i want the wheeling to be faster. And the good thing in this is that i can easily mix this wheeling up or down with other controls on the same normal press of a same button. But for this to work properly, i must first of all cancel in game setting the possibility to select weapons with this same wheeling up or down (i prefer to use weapons shortcuts instead). Like this, it won't change weapons outside a menu or inventory, but only engage the other controls on the same normal press and in menus or inventory, it will only manage the wheeling up or down. Just an idea you guys probably already know.

Thanks for the encouraging and supportive words. I agree that the mouse wheel Input Style isn't great and using turbo on a button with the wheel action assigned is typically better. The only time that I use the mouse wheel style is for browsing web pages. I have it set to vertical swipes with a low friction and it feels a lot like scrolling through pages on a phone/tablet. But, as I'm sure you've guessed, this series is aimed at the basics so I stick to keeping things simple. Eventually, after I have covered every topic, I'd like to make some videos about advanced techniques such as using turbo for the mouse wheel, creating macros using fire start delays, and stuff like that. But I want to ensure that the audience has a firm grasp on the foundation before diving into the advanced stuff.

I completely understand. I can hardly imagine the amount of work and time it must take to synthesize the countless functions of this software. It seems that Valve itself did not have the energy to create this manual for its users. And I think this controller could have been much less enigmatic and so repulsive for the players if it had been accompanied from the beginning by such detailed instructions and of course a such detailed software.

Think scroll wheel setting could be used for driving games, flying, anything with throttle/steering but would have to choose only 1 if it works

Right now I’m currently playing Mortal Online 2 with a Ds4 controller, I’m having trouble trying to make it where I have a radial menu for key bindings 1-0 on my d-pad or right analog stick. Can you please help me figure this out!? PLEASEEEEEEEE

joystick camera (from trackpad to thumbstick) is really weird. touch horizontal position is 0, but left max and right max is scaled from touch position to left edge and right edge. same for vertical.

I stopped using both Steam Input and the Steam Controller about 3 years ago. I switched over to reWASD with the Flydigi Apex 2 and haven't looked back at all. For Steam Controller users, especially power users of the device, reWASD might be missing a couple of features but for 99% of situations it does everything I want it to do. The thing I miss most is overlay menus (Radial or Touch Menus in Steam) but those will be coming out soon -- my guess will be in the Summer update.
