Didn’t agree with a lot of his choices but I don’t doubt that he believed he was building a winner. We also saw how much he cared when Tavares took a knew to the face, when Mikheyev’s arm got cut, how intense he was when they beat Tampa. He truly cared and I don’t think that should be overlooked. Good luck in the future, Dubas. Edit-there’s a lot of people shitting their diapers in the replies.

Not a great gm. The guy tried some NHL be a gm shit requiring cap gymnastics with the best current goalscorer in the league, top 10 playmaker in the league, William Nylander who is a top 15 winger in the league, and Morgan Reilly, a top 10 offensive d man in the league, because of some weird delusion that because an aging Tavares who had maple leafs sheets as a kid HAD TO BE SIGNED to an astronomical deal. Imagine you never brought Johnny in? Kadri becomes who he became, so many other players stay who became great on other teams, Reilly can get a big-minute stay-at-home RHD due to the amount of cap space they have left... wow. I mean Kyle Dubas was the GM. His job was to build, maintain and tweak a teams roster to eventually at least make the finals. He was GIVEN this team. He didn't build it. Marner, Nylander, Matthews, Reilly were already on the team and already developed. Why wouldn't you keep Kadri as 2nd line center rather than waste the money on Tavares? Kadri has a cup now lmao. Hyman is playing the best hockey of his life now in Edmonton. Etc. etc. Imagine the defense you could have if the money was spent on 2 middle line defensemen. Dubas did this team no favors.

This is a weird thought, but I'm kinda wondering if Dubas wasn't attempting a power play here. Everyone knows the Leafs are stuck between a rock and hard place rn. Trying to find a new GM is only going to complicate an already very complicated and time sensitive situation. With Dubas being so public about maybe not wanting to come back, I wonder if he was trying to catch the Leafs in a desperate moment by asking for the raise. Plus, Shanahan mentioning the email Dubas sent so deliberately makes me wonder what was written.

Same goes for when they named him GM. It was horrifically bad timing to give a child GM his on the job training right as the team had to start cementing the foundation of a Stanley Cup contender. And he screwed up royally. The Tavares signing specifically. It raised the cost of all 3 upcoming FAs. Then Dubas got in his feelings about his “core 4”, announced to the world (including player agents) that he would sign everyone, and the snowball began rolling downhill.

Dubas was on the right track and a Stanley Cup is within reach. They were so close. Problem was they hit a wall with Florida super goalie averaging 97% saves. Leafs goalie didn't do bad with 93% saves but that 4% goaltending superiority meant 4 out of 5 games Leafs lost by one friggin goal! Yes the core 4 couldn't muster much and that's a problem but rest of the Leafs team and goalie played great. What happened to Leafs is happening to Florida as their goalie is a beast. Hurricanes won't even get one game and with Vegas sweeping Stars who's goalie is averaging 94% it's clear who will win the Stanley cup. Florida will take it in 6 games. So Dubas isn't wrong. He has a winning team but needs to get a better goalie and get more production from core 4 in playoffs. A shrink should help with that.

@@chrisg1556 Dubas proved what a spoiled, entitled child he really is with this clown show... I can sympathise with how hard being in any position on a pro team can be on family life; long hours, travelling half or more of the year, the constant threat of a sudden change of address or even country. And THEN you add in factors like a very passionate & success starved fanbase who constantly let emotions get the better of them?! But the way Dubious handled all this? Wow, just wow... 1. He should NEVER have made that presser on locker clean out day. Front of office staff can hold their pressers afterwards. Clean out day is for the players & coaches, not the GM's office. 2. While holding the presser was bad, to then turn around and say, "I want to stay but I need time to..." AFTER you've supposedly already asserted to your boss that you're committed to seeing the job through, is nuclear levels of unprofessionalism. 3. Sending in your agent with what can only at this point be seen by your bosses as a ransom demand to retain your services? I thought this guy was supposed to be intelligent?! 4. After blindsiding your bosses with your agent, you then send an email to reassure that you're really wanting to stay on as GM and see this thing through? At the very least that should have been an actual phone call. If you really are an actual professional, it should have been a phone call to say, "we need to meet and discuss this situation in person immediately - can we please make that happen ASAP?" I mean, that's how an adult would act. Instead, Dubious went and seemingly pulled the same childish antics his young superstars have pulled, and now is sitting with a surprised Pikachu face. No wonder this core come off as a bunch of unaccountable & entitled brats.

Yeah, I have a totally different take on the Shanahan press conference. Sports are a brutal business and Shanahan has been in it a long time. He has felt the pressure as a player who was constantly questioned whether or not he had what it took and the leadership ability to win a Cup. Then he finally did after 10 or 11 years. He has experienced the pressure and is now the head of the Leafs where there is constant pressure on everyone in that organization to win. He saw Kyle's press conference and he loses confidence that he wants to even be the GM for the Leafs going forward. You can't put that kind of doubt in someone like Shanahan's mind. I don't think that Shanahan press conference was mean spirited or him taking a knife to Kyle at all. He gave, to the best of his ability, the timeline of what happened leading up to his decision not to extend Kyle's contract. He even went back to make sure that he mentioned that Kyle, in previous conversations had expressed the toll this season had taken on his family. I don't think people would be happy no matter what Shanahan had said but I think the best thing for him to do was to be honest and say exactly what happened and what he was thinking. Kyle is relatively young and I am certain he will learn from this. Almost everyone had the same reaction to Kyle's press conference and many people thought he shouldn't have said anything period, but he did. I also don't get the question you asked as to why Shanahan gets to fire him since he hired him and is responsible for the results. The results have been pretty good, minus the postseason and Kyle wasn't fired because of the work he did. He lost his job because he caused his boss to doubt his commitment to the organization. I think you guys even said on your podcast that you aren't sure how Kyle keeps his job after that press conference. Seems odd that you are now wondering why Shanahan did it and why he is the one doing it. Anyway, love your videos. I hope the Leafs are able to build upon the steps they took this year going forward into next year. I think what happened was that Dubas tried to use the media to create a sense of panic by eluding to the fact that maybe he wasn’t going to be interested in staying in hopes of using all that panic for bargaining power. Problem was that Dubas didn’t realize that from Shannys perspective it just looked like Dubas was doing just what Shanny said when he spoke to the media, which is that, Dubas wants more money while at the same time stating that he wasn’t sure he wanted to stay. So from Shannys perspective, firing Dubas would have been a no brainer. Stating it all in the media, imo, was done because Dubas had tried to use the media to gain a bargaining advantage. So now it was Shannys turn to use the media - I feel - as a sort of tit for tat.

However Steve, I disagree. This organization never talks about stuff from behind the scenes and tbh this is a good sign. They’ve never been open like this before and now Brendan put his foot down to say that we need to change and I wouldn’t be suprised if a bunch of the staff is either gone or leaves due to this move that was necessary. I have a feeling that the next management crew will be more tough when it comes to the core 4 and the new deals they will offer to them. For a franchise who has been rudderless for decades, at least Kyle brought a direction and stability. The team, year over year, improved under Kyle. All more relaxed and fun having organizations that don’t have overbearing mothers scolding them left and right. No wonder the team fails every year

I agree with you completely on Shanahan needing to be let go, but I also think Dubas overplayed his hand by making a statement on Monday throwing doubt about his interest to continue to be the GM and by using his family as an excuse to consider his future with the team. Dubas speaking to the media was not advised by Shanny, but he did it anyway (this was noted in the full version of Brendan's press meeting). So, having Dubas' agent come to the Leafs saying he'll stay for more money just 3 days later was the final nail in his coffin. Did money really settle all the doubts in his mind and in his family? Dubas bluffed and made the situation untenable. What pro sport team would support a gm who wasn't sure they wanted the position? Not a winning one. You played yourself, Kyle, or your agent did. I don't think the Leafs had any real choice after this debacle.

I agree with you 100%. I watched Kyle Dubas' media interview and he looked like a guy who just did not want the Leafs GM job any more. How can you offer a guy a contract worth Millions of dollars for a job he does not seem to want? A winning team needs a GM who wants the job, is thrilled to be there and is willing to give it his all to try and help the team win. Kyle Dubas came across as a guy in his media interview who was in a fog and did not even know what he wanted to do. Using his family as an excuse was bad too. The Leafs could not offer Kyle Dubas a contract after that interview. That interview to me was strange and you are right a complete debacle.

This is a no brainer. Dubas told Shanahan that he and his agent would get in touch with him, the agent did and obviously asked for too much. Dubas didn't, he waited and sent an email to Shanahan when he was sitting down for dinner. When you have won one round in five years, blew over half the cap hit on four guys, and after telling the boss you will speak to him, YOU DON"T SEND A F'KIN EMAIL!!!!! He needed to get his ass into Shanny's office, discuss the amount, make a commitment and do it in person, we're talking millions here. An email may be good for a lot of things, but not this...sometimes old fashioned, proper, repsectful communication is needed.

Shanahan raised and treated Dubas like a son but instead of being a passionate loyal friend, Dubas stabbed him in the back with the pres conference fiasco and threatened Shanahan about whether he wants the job or not. That is betrayal. That is trying to leverage the knowledge MLSE wanted him back to get more money. If any hockey player did this, you’d question his loyalty and commitment to winning. The contracts, traded draft picks, coaching and signings choices from the ol' well of junior success, poor drafting (Lily pad is his best so far) and lack of success through those bad contract years is only going to show it's true ugliness in a couple years time. But hey, the wonder boy fan club will at least have a new face to blame, and wonder boy himself will land somewhere new, lessons in hand, and maybe find success. ...if he's learnt the lesson on being so damn hard headed... seriously, do we think everyone around him was like "Yes Kyle! Steve, I was a Dubas fan despite some mistakes and wanted him back. I did not want Keefe back as he got outcoached every playoffs, I did want a Marner or Mathews trade. But.... When I heard Dubas talk about his family and not being fully committed to the team I started to change my tune about the guy. Not only did he gaslight us about Keefe "adjusting well in the playoffs creating 2 on 1's" (puke) but the lack of commitment made me reconsider him being right for the team at this point. he also tried to "Manipulate" the whole Mathews contract situation about him being integral to that... which was a little scary. This is a big surprise but I am not as upset about it as I was a week ago. We need some culture change in this Organization before we end up with an era of Marner Mathews Nylander completely wasted. As least this means Keefe has to be gone for sure now right? I hope Mathews resigns but that is scary now too. Could you imagine getting a dynasty players and then losing him for nothing and not even one deep playoff run? :/

Classic Icarus flying too close to the sun mistake. All the poise of a dead ostrich to pull a public bait and switch in the presser, then wait 3 days to come back about the presented deal only to pull a "talk to my agent, it's him asking for more money not me" and impatiently followup by email to see if they bought it. Notice that Shanahan said he showed up in person to do the deed afterwards, and that no arm twisting or consultation was necessary - it was his call to make and he made it, without even consulting his agent! Ew. Icky as it would have been to negotiate the contract after that, it still seems stupid to fire Dubas when you could have sent your accountability message with Sheldon "I'm Tearing Up!" Keefe. Sheldon "Playing My Lovely Lady Hunch" Keefe. We have something like 3.5 franchise forwards and the pieces Dubas added at the deadline were our best guys at times. Sammy stole that first series from Tampa when we were getting savaged and suffocated out there by a better system and coach. Woll did as well as you could ever ask from a 3rd Stringer. How hard it must be to blow it against the Panthers after "finally defeating" an old and dying dynasty in Tampa Bay who are each about 2 shot blocks away from LTIR and still looked like they deserved to win that series not us. After all that, it's all aboard the stupid clown bus final destination back where we started. Unbeleafable results.

To be fair, the caps never made it out of the second round until that run in 2018 ten years on from ovi's first playoff appearance. Honestly, what i realized as a fan of those caps teams is that the only way to win a cup is to gather an elite core (which the leafs have done - playoff loses don't change that) and then just keep bashing your head against the wall tinkering with depth pieces until you finally win. Some teams win right away, other teams take a whole decade to make that breakthrough. Some age out of contention altogether before they can win - hope that doesn't happen to y'all. Just gotta wait and pray you finally get bounces unfortunately.
