As a Flames fan I can say that you're getting a competent, if not amazing GM. Decent at drafts and trades, can usually negotiate good contracts (unless the players don't want to be there to begin with) and he seems like an all around good guy. UFA signings are a bit of a yikes and be prepared for a lot of press conferences where he says a lot of words but provides very little actual information.

@agre224 11 ай бұрын
@Judson Wright What are you talking about? The Lindholm, Andersson, Mangiapane, and Gaudreau contracts are/were absolute steals. Kadri's and Huberdeaus contracts are FAR from the worst in the league, especially after only one year and the cap being projected to go up significantly after next year.
@taskdon769
@taskdon769 11 ай бұрын
@@agre224 Lindholm wasn't a steal, it was a trade from Dougie Hamilton which was traded for a 1st and two 2nd. Basically Flames traded a 1st round, two 2nd rounds, Michael Ferland, and Adam Fox for Lindholm and Hanifin. Treliving also traded a 1st and two 2nd for Hamonic too. Treliving short changed Tkachuk because he used Frolik as an excuse but then he traded Frolik away soon after.

If the Leafs decide to get a new coach, I hope they get Bruce Boudreau for no other reason than that I like him and I think he'd resonate well with the younger players in Toronto. He also got plenty of playoff experience and could hopefully do a good job come April.

Bruce Boudreau was also one of my favourite Leafs players back in his playing days...he'd bring a bit of perspective that they need. And he'd probably stop letting Matthews off the hook to kill penalties. Boggles my mind that he NEVER does that, yet still is considered a solid two-way player and even MVP. WTAF??? He's half a player. He COULD be more than that, if someone challenged him to be.

I think Boudreau dream would be to coach the Leafs. He was drafted by them and played most of his NHL player career as a Leaf. His playoff coaching career is a bit questionable, but he brings a lot of passion as a coach and he tries to get the most out of his players. Personally I think Keefe is too soft of a coach and does instill emotion in his players. It would be fitting if Boudreau got his last coaching job as a Leaf.

As an Oiler fan watching a rival's GM make moves over the past couple of years I'd say Treliving is pretty good at his job. He can identify what a team needs and go after it. I feel he was backed into a corner with Sutter and Tkachuk, one he couldn't move and one he didn't want to. Everyone raved at first about the return he got for Tkachuk, and if Huberdeau turns things around under a different coach it will still be seen as the best trade Treliving could've made. I dunno, I think the Leafs are going to be fine.

Dubas should have never been hired hence Shanny should get the boot also as the Leafs are playoff flops during Brendan’s tenure. Would a Nylander or Marner trade be won on paper? Probably not. However, I don't see Nylander producing nearly as well on another team. I know people will say oh he doesn't have heart or go to the hard area which may be true. There are roles on every team that need to be filled by players who possess certain attributes to fillthose roles effectively. Nylander's attributes don't neccessarily fit those demands. I will say Nylander's contract is decent when compared to the other members of the core four. I say, on different teams, Marner would produce much better than Nylander. That being said, I say Nylander has shown that when things are going rough for the core four, he seems to be the guy who comes out with the most points or goals over a short period of time. Must be a knack for being in the right place at the right time? Not a bad player at all and not the problem with the leafs. I'm a Devils fan but live in Ontario so it's Leafs country. I'm always interested in what the Leafs are up to.

Where’s the part where Dubas used his family as a “scapegoat” for what he really wanted. He had already agreed in principle to a contract extension. Then said he needed time to think about coming back and talk to his family who was under so much stress. To then say he was coming back to Shanny and got his agent to present. A new contract with a 50 percent raise per season. Where in the world does Dubas think he is worth 7 mil per season with one playoff round win. Give me a break! He's performed reasonably well when his hands were tied and I think he did quite well in Calgary with the Tkachuk trade with Florida. He was dealing in a position of no leverage and still managed to get two quality players back AND signed them to 8 year deals. He was then able to get Kadri for 7 years. One may argue those deals may not age well towards the end, but all things considered, I think he did pretty good there.
@craigharrison5406

He did really well. The problem is star American players like Gaudreau and Tkachuk don't want to live in Calgary Alberta. Tkachuk wants to hang out at the beach not go snowshoeing in the rockies. Treliving was a victim of location.

The question is...how does a 24 year old Tkachuck have "all the leverage" and DEMAND a trade out of Calgary...But up the Highway in Edmonton, the much maligned Chiarrelli managed to sign AND extend McDavid and Draisaitl.... He lost Johnny and got nothing back. Calgary will be paying Markstrom $6 Million a year until 38,....Kadri $7 Million a year until 38 and Huberdeau $10 Million a year for years to come.... .At least he got Calgary to the second round? Toronto just did that with Dubas.....the upside. Treliving is a veteran. Not particularly flashy, and may be more open to "outside suggestion's" making trades..... Maybe THAT is what Shanahan was really looking for? A mild mannered YESman that won't cause waves as Shanny takes a much more active role?.....His shelf life is being questioned as well. The heat is on.

Steve, pretty sure a July 1 no move clause means they cant trade Matthews during the month of July. Did you mean June perhaps?
@greggburke7796
@greggburke7796 11 ай бұрын
The formula is simple. Toronto needs to move Marner for a franchise defenseman and use the created cap space to upgrade between the pipes. Buffalo would be an IDEAL trading partner if they weren't in the division. They have Dahlin AND Owen Power. Detroit, also a division opponent, has Moritz Seider, who could be part of a package for Mitch. Dallas has Miro Heiskanen, an intriguing piece. But the reality is Matthews is getting impatient & Tavares is getting old. Toronto is likely going to lose the trade on paper, but they can win the trade if it brings them a cup. I propose a complex 3 team trade where Toronto trades Marner & Rielly while adding Roman Jossi, Martin Neccas, & Hurricanes 1st Rd pick. Nashville trades Roman Jossi and Philip Tomasino + their 15th overall pick while adding Mitch Marner, Brett Pesce & Carolina's 1st. Carolina trades Pesce, Necas & their 1st while Adding Morgan Rielly & Philip Tomasino. This trade creates 6.4 million in cap space for the Leafs bringing in players who can contribute right away, give them a TRUE franchise defenseman, AND gives them a mid 1st rounder in a VERY deep draft. Analyzing it from Nashville's perspective, they trade their aging franchise defenseman, a prospect & move down in the draft 15 spots, but add a superstar forward in Marner, and a solid younger defenseman in Pesce whom they have the cap space to sign long-term while maintaining a 1st rd pick in a good draft. Carolina gets to add a high scoring puck moving defender in Morgan Rielly (something they lack) and a solid forward prospect with good upside and some NHL experience in Tomasino. I see this trade as helping everyone involved.

Let's be honest - you never know how things will turn out when you hire a GM. Leafs have gone with expierenced GMs that have won cups in the past like Burke and Lou; however the same success was not duplicated during their time in Toronto. They have gone with Dubas who had no experience but did a fairly good job; however we only got out of the 1st round of the playoffs once and he made some mistakes as well - Nylander negotiations, signing Mrazek, Matt Murray, Nick Ritch etc - but did draft pretty well and found good bargain signings in a flat cap era. Lets give Treliving a chance and see how it turns out.

I find it ludicrous to think that a newly hired GM, one that was actually fired and not resigned from his former team, is told that under a condition of new employment that he cannot contribute to the draft. the Flames FIRED him. Who is going to check this ? Are they the same NHL enforcers that prevent Free Agent tampering when Teams are not supposed to be able to talk to players until July 1st at 12am , and then actually sign them at 12:05am , and then file paperwork with the NHL at 12:10am? Like there was no tampering there. Trev may not be able to sit at the draft table, but i can tell you with 100% certainty, he is going to provide feedback regardless of whether the Flames want him to or not.
