I'm glad to hear that it's still your favorite.... but wait, there's more... Plans and designs for the next axe in the premium Wood-Craft line for Council are taking shape... We hope that it will be on the market sometime soon, following the new Velvicut 1.25 lbs Hudson Bay Belt Hatchet.... Lots of designs and patterns slated to be released by Council covering a large range of axe work and needs... So, stay tuned!! Thanks again for your support! Peace, Rooster (Axe Junkies on FB)

I subscribed on the link, Rooster, not sure it took my email but I'm hoping so... So far my only Council Tool is a Jersey 36" with curved handle -- easily the nicest axe I've ever owned. But I use hatchets more often & I'd love to check out that Velvicut Hudson Bay...

Sounds like the small Hudson Bay Belt Hatchet will be released near the end of July, and the news letter from Whiskey River Trading will notify you when it will be for sale... stay tuned.... :)

That really is a quality system and axe. I'm amazed at the sharpness of it. how you can feather wood at will and how it cuts. Always a pleasure watching you work. // Good to see you out in the wood's again. Looks as if most of your snow has receded. Have a great day Dave.

Good Review Dave. I like seeing gear reviewed after some usage, that is the real key to how a product preformed. I want Thank You as always my Friend for adding a bit of instruction or teaching in your videos. This allowed me and my oldest Grandson to discuss your firelay and how you progressed in building the fire, We also discussed your stances while chopping. He thought it was pretty cool when used the axe with the ferro rod! Take care, Lee and the boys

Thank you for such a kind, encouraging comment, Lee! Its funny you mention your grandson because in doing my videos, I always try to conduct myself in a professional way. In the back of my mind, I think that "kids may be watching" so I like to try to show proper technique and use appropriate behavior for kid/family-friendliness. I love using a ferro rod with this axe! Very fun! Such a great design by Council Tool to harden and sharpen that top edge to make it a true bushcraft/woodcraft axe for guys like us! I appreciate you and your oldest grandson taking the time to watch and please say HI to both of the good boys for me! -Dave

@@HighCarbonSteelLove Hey Dave! I went ahead and bought the Council Tool Woodcraft Pack Axe, I like it a lot, can't wait to use it, I have a camping trip planned for the end of this month. I also bought the leather axe collar from Badgerclaw leatherworks like the one you have. I don't know if you had the same problem when you first got your axe, but I had a hell of a time getting the strap on the sheath to come over far enough to snap it in place. After wrestling with it for a few minutes I finally stretched it enough to snap it closed. I've been leaving it on and snapped for a few days now hoping it will stretch out enough to snap it normally. I have a question for you, did you treat your axe handle with linseed oil when you got it? I hear that's a good thing to do. Don't know if they gave it that treatment at the factory, they don't mention anything about it in the booklet that came in the box. Thanks again!
@HighCarbonSteelLove
@HighCarbonSteelLove 5 жыл бұрын
Thats great to hear, Jeff! You are going to love using that axe! Yes, the leather was a bit tight but i used some Sno Seal and a hair dryer to treat it and it made the leather much more pliable. The axe comes with 1 coat of boiled linseed oil and I added a few more light coats. Let me know how you are liking it, my friend, and congratulations on your purchase! -Dave

Thank you. I'm not much of a double-bit guy, even for throwing. I've got three Gransfors, a Wetterlings, H&B, Arvika and a couple Fsikars. My Wetterlings is the Les Stroud Bushman, I love it for my small axe, only thing is the head is such a wide chisel grind that it's not so great for fine work; whereas, it looks like the Council Woodcraft Pack Axe has a much finer grind so is better as an all rounder...your thoughts?

Thanks for the review! Really nice to see positive people giving reviews on KZfaq. You seem like an all around good guy and I trust your review judgment. My pocketbook is crying since I discovered that there are still high quality axes made right here in America! If anyone is comparing this to a Gransfors Bruks axe I can say this: I own multiples of each, and I can say that I prefer the Council tool velvicut axes over GB. They are both high quality axes, but you can't beat buying something made right here in America by an American Artisan. Thanks again for the great review! I look forward to hearing about great products and the very nice people who make them!

Spectacular videos, ALL of them. Please stay active with your generous knowledge based videos. Is there an advantage to a wood buck saw over a metal tube bow saw in your opinion? Sorry to get off topic, but would value your input.
@HighCarbonSteelLove
@HighCarbonSteelLove 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the very kind, encouraging words! I really appreciate that! I would say the saw all depends on the blade quality, the length and how much space you have to cut with (from the blade to the frame). I like making wood buck saws in the forest, as some of the larger metal tube bow saw frames get tricky to carry out in the woods. -Dave

Now that is a beautiful axe! And that shoulder sling is something else too! It's almost too beautiful to use, but it also looks like it does a fantastic job too. So where do you get such good handles? I have gone to several different stores and I usually find one good handle in 50 or worse. In fact, I've found substandard handles on axes costing $150+ like Wetterlings and Gransfors Bruks models.

Say Heah, Yup, I brought my 24" Council Wood Craft Pack Axe with the heavy duty sheath and sling, my Agawa Canyon 21 Boreal Saw with the Crazy Horse Scabbard with a extra aggressive saw blade in the Scabbard. My new W. C. Custom's my Cold Steel Ultimate Hunter Folder in the Carpenter CTS-XHP and my Gerber Multi Tool. Ofcource I only pick and choose from this list when I leave our base camp for instance to scout a new area out. But our biggest problem is the Arctic Front that followed us down. Man, like right now, 12:49 a.m. Mon. 1st of Jan. 2018, it's - zero, too cold for this boy, hmmmmm mmmm mmmmmm, sure we sneak out for a little in front of where we're staying, a beautiful area, but only for a very short time. But inside we have everything needed to start off our New Year, too bad it's this cold. Oh, I brought some Delish Drew Estate Acid Legends, a Ammerato/Hazelnut a box of infused cigars, plus a few other cigars, all the steak, lobster, plus other eye candy food and drink. But only "IF" ("half of life") Oh well maybe next year, just joking, springs not too far in the distance, Dilly Dilly, Right.,,.p

I do prefer the Woodcraft Pack axe, however, it's about $80-$100 more than the 17-inch Hudson Bay axe. I would say for the money, the Hudson Bay axe is very tough to beat. I love that axe! Thank you for watching and leaving your awesome question! -Dave

I just bought a Cold Steel Trail Boss budget axe. I'm waiting for it, as we speak. I like Council Tool, never personally owned one of their axes. What I like is the specs of the Trail Boss, decent 1055 carbon steel, 2 lb 9 oz axe head and 26'' inch hickory handle. I think it will be a decent kindling axe. Not to mention the price of $32 with rave reviews. I split two - three full face cord of wood a year for campfires with my Plumb Victory double bit and 3 1/2 lb single bit ironically made in Taiwan like the Trail Boss. I prefer American, Swedish, Canadian, German or Japanese made products. I'm just very carious about the Cold Steel Trail Boss.

Dave, yes I have used it three times. Really put it to the test. I split a lot of 10- 12'' rounds of semi- frozen balsam fir. Much larger than what that axe is intended for. It good to know what any axe will do in a pinch. I'm going to use it to split small rounds and kindling. I would highly recommend it. The Greenland pattern is beautiful, the grain orientation isn't good, but its solid, so far. There's drip marks on the axe head from the black enamel. The axe head is perfectly in line with the handle. Great fit, no gaps. Two circular steel wedges instead of one, which the older Trail Boss' had. The edge wasn't sharp, I just did some light filing to it. Great budget axe, thus far. I'm so pleased with it I ordered two more for my best friends.

Why the 24 inch handle vs. the 19 inch handle for a pack axe? I am on the line. why should I go for the 24 inch?
@kenroohr
@kenroohr 4 жыл бұрын
The 24" handle is better for two arm use. More power in each swing. The 5" of extra handle doesn't weigh much and is worth carrying if you use your axe a lot.

I am looking at this axe and a few others in the same mold. So many reviews and videos have people felling, bucking and splitting soft woods. I have a lot of downed and dry pin oak, hickory and sycamore in my area. I expect them all to cut fairly evenly but I am lost on which will split the best on these hardwoods. I am looking at the woodcraft axe, husky forest axe, council tool velvicut hudson bay and bad axe boys axe and of course the scandinavian forest axe. Any comments for me?
@HighCarbonSteelLove
@HighCarbonSteelLove 6 жыл бұрын
When I am in the forest, I tend to seek soft wood and my axes that I take into the woods work really well. Ligher weight, pack axes. However, at the homestead, when chopping and splitting good clean hardwood for the wood burning stove, I use different axes. My home axes are the Fiskars x27 splitting axe and the Council Tool Boys Axe. Excellent hardwood axes. Of the axes you mentioned, I think the Velvicut Bad Boys Axe would serve you well for your described tasks. Also, Council Tool sells and excellent splitting maul. Thank you for taking the time to stop by! -Dave

Dave, I have really enjoyed your channel for over a year. Gotta ask you one question that continues to perplex me... Why do I see so many of your axe videos where you are chopping fairly small diameter dead trees while they are on the dirt and then a moment later you edit in some bucking and splitting video where you have a large nearby log at your campsite which you film chopping and splitting against? Thanks.
@HighCarbonSteelLove
@HighCarbonSteelLove 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the kind words, David! I don't necessarily cut into the dirt, it's just some good bucking on the far side of the wood. It's mostly to mix it up and keep it entertaining. Shooting video of straight wood chopping isn't very exciting, IMHO, so I try to keep things moving and change up the pace. I appreciate you taking the time to stop by, my friend! -Dave

The Fiskar X-Series axes are amazing cutters & slitters with a lifetime free axe replacement if it breaks. But the Council Tool Woodcraft Pack Axe looks good for a longer lasting axe head & edge but come with the disadvantages the Fiskars was design to beat: - handle breakage - heavier axe due to wood handle - wood is not weatherproof like polymer - higher price these "traditional" axes *Tough chioice*
