People have the term Latino all wrong. Latino refers to the languages that derive from Latin. Which are Spanish, French, Portuguese and Italian. So Spanish speakers, also ppl who speak creole (which comes from french) such as Haiti. And also portuense speaking countries in America such as brazil. So DR and PR are both Latinos because they speak a Latin derived language, but they are also Hispanic because it refers to spanish speaking countries and they are also Caribbeans geographically speaking. Now you can be hispanic and Latino at the same time, but you can also be a Latino and not a Hispanic (such as Haiti and Brazil) which are both Latinos because their language comes from Latin.

Is a very interesting conversation. I’m Puertorriqueño, and I have lived my whole life here in the island. To me being Hispanic has more to do with culture than race. Here in the island we have white, brown, black, and even Asian people and all of them are puertorriqueños. We do have a racism problem that stems from colonization, but I feel over the years with much education and celebration of each part of ourselves (native, black and whites Europeans from Spain) we have a somewhat unique culture that makes us… us. So I think Latino, Hispanic is more rooted to that. The culture. Mexicans, Centroamérica, South America have a multitude of different Latino cultures.

Since there are 33 countries in Latin America that are filled with various cultural, ethnic, and racial backgrounds I believe the term(s) is not an appropriate term to decribe people who live in or are of latin american decent. It's a geographic location. I do understand that Latinx/e was created to be more inclusive. Although it isn't a term(s) that I necessarily feel like I have to use or need. I appreciate what it was intended for and understand the need for it. It was a good step forward for inclusivity. What I've noticed is that the terms Latino/Hispanic often give white people a space to avoid owning their whiteness and the historical context as it relates to Latin America. They are able to use latindad as a way to avoid understanding their role in and how they benefit from white supremacy. As well as how they have and benefit from white privilege (as white people, not white passing people). I think latino is used by some because it is "simpler" when describing themselves to others who aren't. This was an interesting conversation. As a Black Dominican American I feel no need to use Latino/Hispanic outside of the way that I mentioned above that makes it "easier". I tend to identify as my race and nationality. My race comes first given the world we live in today. Often latindad doesn't understand that and as mentioned in the video Black people are often left out of latindad. I think everyone needs to choose a term that fits their identity (hispanic, latino or latinx) but they should be aware of the messages they send when using them.

I agree with Jose. Our fight for inclusivity and pushing back against oppression will not happen with Latinix as the vehicle. It happens with struggle and activism. And we can’t avoid gendered language since it is totally integrated into the Spanish language. This is not a straight argument. It’s about being practical.

Great discussion as always. For me i will never understand the logic behind people thinking or identifying latino/hispanic as a race. Latino for me ist just like Arab, Turkic, Slavic, Germanic, Bantu, Indo-Iranian or even how Africans would refer to others as "francophone". Its just a term used to generalise a group of people based on linguistic. The only thing truly seperating us from North Americans is that our countries were colonized by latin countries instead of germanic ones. I dont even think Latino can be referred to as a culture or ethnicity (although i would always argue that its an ethnicity and NOT a race lol) since all latin countries have a different culture, demographic (in terms of who represents a majority/minority and in terms of influence), history, cuisine etc. As someone who is half Brazilian and Puertorican ethnically speaking i dont find myself to have more in common with Argentinians, bolivians, Mexicans, Costa Ricans. I dont think "Latino" would even be a thing if it wasnt for white americans wanting to seperate themselves from white latinos whilst setting themselves as the standard for "white culture" in the Americas . Ask for who "counts" as latino. I think in ppl of the "new world" often have a difficult time understanding the difference between nationality, race and ethnicity. What language some does or does not speak has no influence on and has nothing to do with their ethnicity lol. By that logic, lets call everyone who speaks english Germanic Just imo, latinos who never had to think of race or how to identify usually never had to because they represent or look like the majority in their country. E.g. in Brazil nobody who is white or looks mixed identifies with their actual race, they'll just say they are brazilian but black people are always "afro-" or Black and natives will always be specific about what the are. Jamaica (not latin but as an example) Black people are the majority so they dont have to think about their race, they are just jamaican. However those who are mixed with Indian or chinese, or those who are just indian etc all have specific racial terms.

Hola! I can totally appreciate this entire conversation and I feel that we need to continue to have more conversations in a very informative way. I can appreciate everyone on this panel and all of your views and contributions to this topic. However, I do have an issue with the way the conversation was framed with "LATINOENOUGH." We can certainly acknowledge that this was a trending phrase on social media that influenced this episode however, we also have the opportunity to rephrase and recorrect to drive the conversation towards the root of Latinidad rather than to feed into the toxic intension behind "LATINOENOUGH." Again, I love that these conversations are being had and that we are literally experiencing all of the ways in which Latinos are so extremely diverse. It's beautiful! ❤

It depends on how you define Latin are you using it as a geographical nomenclature or language root nomenclature? With the term Hispanic it literally refers to anyone from a region or land colonized by spain. It’s so weird how people try to skew and shrink the qualifications just to cut people out. A lot of black Latinos/Hispanics are pushed out of the culture simply because of how they present especially when they’re “mixed” but it’s not the accepted version of being “mixed” such as black Haitian + black boricua or black Cuban + black American or black Colombian +black Canadian which is unfortunate.

I think a lot of people need to learn that google and research is a thing because latino was coined by the french when they colonised parts of south and central america (including the islands around) and it referred to the countries that now spoke the “romance languages” or in other words the latin based languages of french, spanish and portuguese. This makes guadeloupéens, Martinique’s and haitians latino. (There are some others but I forgot). My dudes it’s a simple google search away.

What would have made this even more inclusive and interesting is if you had a Haitian and a Brazilian on the panel. Since they're not hispanic, these two groups typically get left out of the latino conversation entirely. Being latino is not only about the geographical regions, but also about the fact that your colonial language is derived from the latin language. @letemknowzo actually made a video about it. Still, great episode.

No one can take your ethnicity away from you. If you don't speak Spanish again you are still Latino, but you will need to do your homework...lol Being Latino today has no color, Cultural Identity defines you. If you are indigenous, you can not be Latino. Speaking Spanish or Living in the Americas does not make you Latino. It makes you American.
