Continuing our experimenting with an airtight breathable building with the aim to use natural products and keep loss of internal floorspace minimal. Of course on a new dwelling the same approach would be three or four times the thickness, most likely panels built off site however it is great to be hands on with the materials on this smaller note basic build.

Love the build. Rigid and flexible woodfibre is what we use by default on all our builds both extensions and new build. Instead of the thermally broken mushroom fixings or the slab nail you can use a wide backed 120/160mm staple fired from a (very large) pneumatic staple gun. Much faster and a super tight hold.

I used the sheeps wool insulation while building "Green" teardrop trailers for a company I work for. Just for added security we went through and shot 1 1/4" staples through the osb into the wool to make sure it didn't shift down while driving. Sounds like yours won't have a problem, but if your worried about its just a little insurance

My first job after leaving school was working at Standard Fireworks and we had to wear wool overalls for fire protection. The summer of 76 which some will remember as the hottest summer ever was a nightmare in those overalls. My only concern was the wood fibre boards which you say should char up in a fire.

The whole building is made of wood. If a fire starts is going to burn. As long as it burns slowly it's okay. You only need enough time to get out. All buildings burn. It's just a question of how fast.

@@TheRestorationCouple This is the principle behind the VCL, you make it airtight from the inside. People say if you don't have one it badly compromises your real life insulation performance. Main losses are where wall meets floor, where an interior wall meets external wall, plus the soil stack has big losses. I think we are talking about pinhead sized penetrations but I heard a guy say they add up to having a window wide open. I can see why you might not want an oil based product in your house but they do seem to be effective from what I have read about them. I don't think they are incompatible with breathable walls when the gauge is lower, they are a control system not a total barrier.

Surprised you didn't go for flexible wood fibre for filling the walls. I found it great to work with for insulating our shed (for a tortoise habitat) and it doesn't get the rippling effect you saw with being slightly too wide in places. Its a lot more like a huge sponge and retains its shape whilst squishing. Definitely one to try out before you settle on plans for the rest of the farm.
