This video contains the story behind 3 landscape images taken in Banf National Park, Canada. The 1st image, which sees us all struggle in deep snow is my least favourite of the 3. I was so restricted with my movements that I could not frame the composition as I would have liked. I am much happier with the 2nd photograph, which has an interesting foreground leading up to a pristine winter landscape. The 3rd image, which is a panorama is probably my favourite of the 3 photographs. It is balanced, has lots of different areas of interest and is rather subdued in nature.

You make a good point, "always keep your head an a swivel." The mountain may look "lit up", but the composition, from where he's siting, looks kinda blah. That hill in the foreground doesn't appeal to me, it's really just an obstruction.
@davidsargent2544
@davidsargent2544 5 жыл бұрын
@@EdAb Looks like there may have been reflection potential with a shift to the right a hundred feet or so. It'd have at least been worth a try with that gorgeous light. Even an intimate closeup may have been appropriate with that mountain face. Though the image he chose to go for there worked out beautifully too.
@EdAb

@@davidsargent2544 You could be right, but we can't know, because we weren't there. I think everyone should remember, that when Thomas misses a possible shot because he's talking into the camera, he's doing it as a sacrifice for us viewers, not because he's being lazy, or unobservant.

2 minutes in you got stuck in the snow, and I'm a friendly Canadian here to help you avoid this in the future. If you EVER get stuck like this, don't try to stand up, that's pointless. If you fail once, you'll fail 100 times. Roll onto your stomach and push up to your hands and knees. Bring your dominate foot forward (If you dont know which one that is, imagine running and sliding on ice. Which ever foot is forward, that's your dominate foot) and once you have your foot flat and on one knee, pray for a moment. Think of your wife. And stand up in one smooth motion. This displaces your weight amongst a larger area, and lets you stand up.

You can't beat walking in deep snow for great cardio. I get to do it at least a few times each winter here in western New York. I'm a big boy and when you go down it is hard to get back up. You've got to just roll out of it. I love the silence of snow and the soft muffled sounds when it is actually coming down is even better. It certainly has a restorative effect on the soul. You looked like a new man. Love Canada, the true North!

People who haven't slogged through snow like you did in the first scene don't understand how tough that is. I can hike all day with my backpack and have no problems. But... Put me in calf-deep or deeper snow, especially on an incline, and I'm having a heart attack after about 75 yards. I know it heated you up too, judging by all the snow you were devouring. Congratulations on continuing! (Cold is easy, compared to that.) I think the shots were well worth the effort!

When I see one of those survival stories, where a plane crashes in the mountains, with maybe 10 feet or more of snow, and the people manage to walk 50 miles (injured!) to rescue, it's just beyond me. I live in Alaska, and a few years ago, we had a record snow fall, and being an avid hiker, I went out to do some night photography. I was walking along the edge of a lake, and although the snow itself was pretty flat-looking, this was due to the wind, and the terrain under it was NOT flat. I sank in up to my waist, and seriously thought I might not make it out... no more than 100 yards away from civilization. It's a good idea to always travel with a buddy or two in these situations!

What I am finding fascinating is having a clique of photographers in the one location and comparing what they come up with. Nick Page was a little more to the left at the first location and managed to move the annoying tree to the right of the creek. The image had a completely different feel with the creek becoming the hero of the image. So jealous, would love to be able to get to locations like that.
