My best story? Once upon a time there was a dude with small collection of Amigas in need of love. The A500 had a torn jumper pad and needed a recap. The single owner CD32 needed a recap. The two battery-acid eaten A3000's of dubious heritage needed, well, a lot more. After binging on KZfaq retro repair videos, the dude thought he might attempt repairs himself if only he had the right equipment. What's the worst that could happen he thought. If he screws up or can't figure things out, there's always Dr. Chris as a backup. After all, the good Dr. would be able to fill another 80 hours of his schedule and gain content upload. It was a glorious plan.

Always good to get recommendations on tools people actually use rather than just advertising cos they got given free for a review.

Yeah Chris, I need one of these puppies. I'm just a hobbyist, but I have worn out two iron bulb solder suckers and two spring loaded button trigger suckers disassembling all sorts of electronics for salvage stock. Some of my favorites are UPSes. My wife doesn't even ask "what is that awful toxic burning smell?" anymore. I've gotten better at desoldering over the past couple of years with practice and somewhat better tools, but I still occasionally burn something up, which is annoying. I bought a cheap combo iron and heat gun station a while back that has worked amazingly well. The one annoying thing about it was no master power switch, maybe to ensure the heat gun cool down cycle wasn't interrupted? I installed a master power switch. Warrany? I don't need no steenkin' warrany! I have gotten good at using solder braid, but it's tedious on larger jobs. I have wanted a good solder sucker since I first saw one, but the past few years' economy and the necessary belt tightening makes it hard to justify the expenditure. I would really like to do a Re-Amiga or two and this unit would be a big help. Thanks for the review and all the great Amiga renovations you do!

Just got my wep 948d3. That thing is amazing. Probably the best desoldering work. I removed a 23pin dsub and it made it a lot easier to remove it. Thank you Chris for mentioning it!

Thanks for the vid and code Chris. I'm overdue for replacing my junk desoldering station that has plastic parts that keep breaking and it really doesn't seem all that motivated to suck. I mean it does suck. It really sucks, like taxes suck. Anyway, definitely going to order a new WePTools one. I also overdue for fume extractor so my brain doesn't melt away (like what happened to that dude in that Halt and Catch Fire TV series.) Brains good. Fumes bad.

That's the difference with you, Chris: you want to help everyone in the hobby and recommend the tools you use. A few years ago I asked a certain German KZfaqr also into Commodore, I won't mention his name, what brand of de-solder station he used, and I got an earful about how he reckoned he should get paid for that info or have affiliate links up. That exchange made me want to not see any of his content ever again.

Hi Chris, I could use one of these! I have a pile of retro stuff collected through the years needing repairs - an A1200, a Vectrex, and most of all, about a dozen old keyboards (Northgate, Focus, some old ADB Apples) that need lots of switches replaced. My trusty old plunger-style tool is fine for light work, but the thought of using it for this backlog just makes for procrastination 😂 Hope you can help!

I realized that my "story" isn't all that entertaining, so I'll see if I can't improve my chances with one that is. It isn't really related to this device, but it does involve working on a 1084 monitor. I had a small business running in Albany, NY, involving making graphics on Amigas, mostly for used car dealerships. I'd make something garish with lots of movement, and then overlay it over typical "BUY BUY BUY" cheapo used car ads. I'd walk my Amiga 500 and genlock into a local TV station, and run the graphics in real time over the crap video. This helped pay my college tuition and expenses. One day, I was asked to create a touch-screen kiosk for a client. I scratched enough pennies together to buy a touch screen kit, one that you could retrofit into a 1084. I didn't know much about hardware at this point, but I followed the terse instructions, and was in the process of installing a second power supply and the overlay screen over the tube. I powered the open frame monitor up for a smoke test, and it worked - but it needed a tweak. So I reached over the monitor to grab a tool... and the bottom of my arm brushed a cap. I had been doing this at my kitchen table. The voltage caused my arm to violently swing up and back with tremendous force. So much so that I woke up (blacked out for a sec) on my back, the chair having been knocked over with me in it. I brushed myself off, turned off the monitor, let it sit for a day, and then put it all together. It worked great. I've since continued my love of hardware to this day, but taking much better precautions. I'm happy to report that I haven't had another electrocution in the last 40-some-odd years.

it's a Hekko clone, the only thing that needs fixing is the felt filter in the gun they can be a pita, had a big duratool rework station for many years both the gun and the iron failed within a week of each other so I bit the bullet and got a Weller station with the WTP90 iron, not cheap but after 25 years of cheap stuff and plenty of Antex irons, I felt it about time

Just want to add a bit of caution. Sorry. I've had several versions of these Hakko clone desoldering stations over the last four or five years. I haven't had much bad to say about them, at least for the first few times I've used them. They worked great for the first month or two. But no matter my diligence in keeping the filter clean and the solder tube clear, I found that all of them began to lose suction power and started frequently plugging up between the tip and the tube. Temp setting didn't fix it. I'd spend nearly an hour drilling out the solid solder at the tube end of the handle. I'd replace the handle unit and have most of the suction power restored, but not all. It got to be a monumental pita every time I tried to use them. This is a newer version of the last one I had, so maybe Chris's experience will be different. I hope. Wouldn't it be wonderful if this version completely fixed that problem. Let us know how this station is working for you in a few months Chris. I'm now on my first experience with the Hakko FS301 and so far, yes it's bulky, but it sucks like a big dog and hasn't clogged on me once. I'd have gone with the Hakko table soldering station if I could have afforded it, but that price was nearly a heart attack all by itself.

Thanks for this. I have to do the obligatory ask. Did you then run the sucker 3 times after you had finished like mentioned in the instructions? Now to be fair, I have found the same thing the run the sucker 3 times does help but you still get clogging. The cheaper ones you just have to clean after each use even it is only once/casual use.

Well... a looong, looong time ago, and very far away... (mid to late 1990's) somewhere in darkest maryland, I was trying to troubleshoot a malfunctioning microwave. I did everything I could think to do with the thing, and some things I couldn't think of... NOTHING! And then MORE nothing! My curses reached the very pillars of heaven. At some point, amidst my tears and the crumbled remnants of my EGO and shattered psyche; I noticed that the thing had a blown glass fuse on the board. You know, around that general power ingress area of the entire technological conglomeration? Ah... live and learn. It ain't ALL rocket science it seems.
