Cover Crop Cocktails for Deer Food Plots...I usually recommend planting a diverse mix of Cover Crop Food for summer food pltos. I planted a cover crop cocktail deer food plot in my QDMA research plot. The seed was donated by Don Higgins of Real World Wildlife Seed.
I am trying to get folks to start thinking about cover crop cocktails for deer food plots in summer and over the winter. Especially Destination food plots designed to feed the local deer herd and allow a landowner to actually manage the carrying capacity and health of the local herd.
Cover crop mixes offer a buffet of plants so that deer can find what they most need throughout the season. Also, these mixes build up soil health so that the food plot can produce nutrient rich forage every year without expensive inputs.
Cover crop mixes for summer food plots might include plants like cow pesa, vetch, sunflowers, sorghum, brassicas, clovers.

whats an alternate way to plant if i dont have a seed drill if i want to implement the buckwheat in june and have a late season plot for deer? Can i just plant buckwheat in june then mow and till it in in August, broadcast the winter wheat and brassicas into the tilled green manure? Give me youre thoughts. Thanks

my p and k is low and i have just implemented so new plots in timber that are going to be a first year planting on this soil so I thought this method would be the best way to approach things. Spray roundup then till, plant buckwheat in june, mow buckwheat before it flowers, till it in, broadcast wheat and brassicas, fertilize and boom thats it!:)

There is a lot to unravel here. I am going to assume you have a rotary tiller but no seed drill. First let me say that you should look for a rental drill or ask a farmer if he would plant for pay. If that doesn't work out, and you have a tiller, and the soil is not real stony, you can till, put the WW and brassicas on and drag it or go over it again in high gear and shallow to get the seeds underground a little then pack it or hope for good rain. Which is a long shot in late summer. I had a good stand of peas + brassicas last year in a site in NY by tilling, broadcast peas, till in, then put brassica on top and went over it with a cultipacker. I don't like mowing since you end up with a thick layer of duff on the right side of the mower deck and nothing can grow there. I would spray the summer cover and broadcast the fall/winter cover seeds heavy and go over it with a cultipacker or if you dont have one just let it die and lie down.

@@ChilcoteForestryServices what would you plant if i wanted to plant in a area that i wanted food and bedding in the same plot? i cut down a bunch of invasive species, honey suckle which equals around .5 acres and now i feel like i may have negatively affected deer bedding cover. Also could use some advice on in the timber plots, areas with minimal shade. I also have around an acre of soybeans i wanted to plant. Any ideas on how to implement them into a planting? could i mix them with something since i know my soybeans plot will be gone really quick. Right now i have 50lbs of buckwheat, egyptian wheat, sorghum, clover and chicory, corn and beans and brassicas

@@fueledtohunt2173 I can't read your entire message for some reason. but I would plant an upland bird mix. I will putting some in my QDMA demonstration plot. Sometimes, taking out invasives also takes out bedding cover. So, we have to replace it with native plants. See what comes up from seed in that area - you may get a perfectly good bedding cover back in a couple growing seasons.

Ok now I can see the rest. I have used a tiller to plant large seed. Till a couple passes, spread seeds, till in high gear to get the seed buried but not too deep, cultipack, put small seed on, cultipack again

This field was hit with glyphosate pre plant. There's foxtail in it but didnt take over. Since there are grasses in the mix you cant use a grass herbicide. Better to start with one type of crop for a couple years to get werds controlled. I.e. all legumes or all grass
