Damn. I searched for a video exactly like this. What i suspected beforehand is, the DW and the Gauger mount stayed truest to the free floating tone of the drum. What i did not suspect is that the RIMS mount and the Gauger mount had so much difference in sustain even though they're almost the same construction. What a difference one single contact point can make. What i also not suspected was that the Optimount affected the drum tone so much. The Pearl website says that the aluminium Optimount "provides ultimate stability and resonance", but apparently for 129€ it doesn't do more than a 20€ RIMS mount. Seems like i know the reason why my Tama 10" hyperdrive tom sounds choked at some tunings: heavy hardware. The Snare stand also surprised me. It had a lot more sustain than i remembered from when i put my 14" floor tom in a snare stand. Floor tom legs. That's an inferno. The soft rubber legs did a lot to let the drum sustain, but it sounded like it still hasn't reached the full potential. I use the TnR Booty Shakers on my 16" Tom to maximize Sustain. My 14" is tensioned a little higher, so it sustains good enough. One thing that i also noticed is the angle that the drum is placed at. The Pearl ISS mounts (metal to metal hoop contact) works fine in most tunings when the drum is nearly flat. But as soon as you tilt it like 10 degrees downwards, which you will have to do if you mount a deeper tom over a Bass drum, suddenly all the sustain is gone and you're looking at a mess of overtones. Do you have any experience in that with the Gauger and the DW mount? I want to know because my next drumset will be a custom build with a 15x12 tom over a 26" bass drum. It would be greatly appreciated if you could tell me or maybe even do a video regarding tom angles and change of tone. Conclusion for me: Great comparison. My next drumset will either have the DW or the Gauger mounts.

Hi there thanks for your interesting comment. As far as your Superstar tom I think that their mount works pretty good, but being the star mount attached to the top hoop it may take off some sustain from the drum, the same thing happen when you hold the drum from the hoop with you hand. The optimount holds the tom on 4 point (tension rods) so it may affect the top and the bottom rims, moreover the weight is crucial in that case, as an heavy drum will weight way more on the mount enabling the "floating effect". As far as your custom kit I'd be using a snare stand to hold that monster of 15x12 tom, you can use the flex frame from @GaugerPercussion if you want to have the "fullest" note out of your tom. A 15x12 is supposed to be pretty heavy on the stand, so if you don't want to use a basket stand I think that a Gauger rim with 3 contact points might do the job. Tilting is something to look as well, in you case the drum will be heavy and deep, so it will leverage more on the mount. I've had a DW 12" tom that had been out on tour for 7/8 years, the mount was a bit crooked so it wasn't floating as it was supposed to. As result the sound was chocked compared to other DW toms (even older than that one!) The sound worked under the mic but there wasn't the "usual" DW tone. Moreover when tilted the sustain was shorter as the mount wasn't free to move and leave the drum floating. Dave

Great video , mi sonor aq2 sounds 3 secons resonance and my tama Silvestar sound 4 secons ressonance,.. the tom mount afects this resonance.....That is true... Thanks for this video...

Per quanto riguarda l'utilizzo del Reggirullante, ho visto e provato che se si incastra la parte di cerchio che non tocca niente (quella più alta, guardando la pelle battente), nella scanalatura per intenderci, il fusto è molto più libero. Ho provato anche avendo il cesto completamente aperto e la differenza si presenta comunque, nel caso non lo sapessi c'è anche questa variante ( ;

Hi there! Each mount behaves differently and absorbs different frequencies, so I tried to locate the spot(s) where it was most noticeable (to be easily heard on a KZfaq video) and tuned the drum accordingly.

Ciao, qualsiasi detergente purché non contenga alcol, altrimenti esplode il fusto.

Grazie per il video. Ho visto che hai utilizzato anche la Mapex e che hai armeggiato con il supporto, ma non ho capito cosa hai fatto... potresti spiegarmelo? Come già ci eravamo sentiti in merito al disastro che fanno i supporti Mapex, se ci fosse modo di migliorare l'ammazza armoniche sarebbe cosa strepitosa da fare subito.... Grazie mille

Ciao Luca, in questo caso ho allentato le 2 viti esagonali che tengono il supporto attaccato ai blocchetti, lo scopo era quello di allentare la tensione creata, ma il risultato non è migliorato di molto. L'unica soluzione è rimuovere il supporto e sostituirlo con un rims. Dave

Ciao, ho un timpano da 18" che suona molto poco (dovuto anche al bearing edge full contact) mi diresti come si chiama il modello di gambe della Gibraltar con i gommini morbidi? Grazie

Ciao, questo tipo di piedini hanno il passo da 12,7 mm e si adattano a blocchetti con il medesimo passo (tipo DW e Gretsch) www.gibraltarhardware.com/product/sc-rtl/ Altrimenti se hai gambe standard puoi acquistare il kit di piedini Pearl anche questi funzionano bene nel mantenere il sustain. Prima però fai il test di sollevare il Floor Tom e sentire se cambia qualcosa suonandolo senza le gambe in appoggio.

@@yourdrumsound Pensi con un timpano C&C Player Date II potrebbero essere compatibili? Altri escamotage per aumentare il sustain?

@@monzprod Per capire se sono compatibili bisognerebbe vedere la dimensione delle gambe, non so che tipo di hardware monti C&C.

Ciao Dave hai avuto modo di provare il sistema maats che Randy May ha realizzato per mapex? Io ho provato a cercare le gambe del timpano le sas ma non li danno come spare mapexdesignlab.com/content/en/components_01.html mapexdesignlab.com/content/en/components_02.html

Ciao Angelo, ho provato le gambe per il Floor Tom ma non funzionano come le DW sebbene il design sia simile. Mapex non ha alleggerito il materiale sulle curve, quindi tolgono del sustain. Non ho avuto modo di provare il supporto, ma lo trovo veramente molto ingombrante e complicato, anche poco gradevole esteticamente se vogliamo includere anche questo aspetto. Inoltre devi avere per forza quel tipo di hardware e non puoi montare un supporto standard tipo Dixon o Gibraltar come si usa normalmente su DW o batterie con i rims.

@@yourdrumsound grazie Dave si lo trovo anch'io sgradevole a livello estetico ed enorme credo che escludendo questo forse l'unico sistema di "gate " regolabile valido resta il sonor che con la sua vite irrigidisce il supporto nonostante ho diversi amici endorser non ho mai avuto la possibilità di provarlo. Penso sempre a tutte ste cose poi guardo le gretsch personali di Colaiuta (ha i blocchetti direttamente sul fusto alla vecchia e hanno tolto tutte le parti in gomma ) e penso un po'

@@angelopetralia5251 personalmente penso che non bisogna fasciarsi troppo la testa su certi tecnicismi, e lo dico spesso nei miei video. Però d’altro canto bisogna essere a conoscenza da dove potrebbe venire un problema legato al suono, visto che spesso può capitare di perderci molto tempo impazzendo (pelli, accordatura…) mentre la soluzione è da tutt’altra parte. La Gretsch di Colaiuta è così perché è nata così, si tratta di un suo vecchio set che è stato riverniciato, quindi sono stati mantenuti tutti i “fittings“ originali.

@@yourdrumsound si Dave sono d'accordo con te ho lavorato in una fabbrica di batterie e per una ventina d'anni ho fatto il drum doctor anch'io a rifare bordi e a trovare spesso soluzioni e migliorie spesso anche su batterie appena acquistate dai clienti alcune anche pagate quasi decine di migliaia di euro sul set di Colaiuta come dici tu hanno riverniciato blu cobalto una vecchia sua signature. Per quanto riguarda invece quella che utilizza sempre in studio è un prototipo della sua signature ma con delle caratteristiche custom ho avuto la fortuna anni fa di averla tra le mani e poterla studiare attentamente una delle più belle batterie mai sentite Chris hauer ha fatto un lavoro incredibile su quella batteria per fortuna che i brand non fanno uscire di serie batterie così altrimenti i drum tech smettiamo di lavorare 😄

@@angelopetralia5251 Chris è sicuramente è un professionista, ma soprattutto qualcuno che mette molto impegno, passione e tempo in ricerca, quindi sa ciò che fa. I batteristi non hanno tempo di pensare ai vari tecnicismi dello strumento, quindi quando trovano qualcuno che sa cosa sta facendo (per i motivi di cui sopra) si rendono conto di ciò che il lavoro di questa persona aggiunge alla loro figura professionale, si fidano e si mettono nelle sue mani. Qua da noi la mentalità è differente, si lascia molto spesso la scelta al caso, si aprirebbe un discorso molto ampio su questo argomento, con il quale immagino avrai avuto a che fare.
