Great video that helped me do what was done in the video. I had replaced the speedo cable but my 1996 Tacoma continued to squeal from the speedometer when it was cold, speedo needle waving all over the place. Same story, old grease that was hardening. Cleaned it up, oiled the rotating parts with Slip 2000 gun oil and put graphite on the worm gears. Now it is smooth as silk.

Thanks man! Mine was reading way low with the needle well below the zero and making a TERRIBLE noise when it was cold. I took everything apart as shown here, cleaned the old dried up grease and lubed everything up with ATF. All is good now!

I'm having that exact problem with my speedometer

@MotoXYZ450f The Speed sensor is actually part of the gauge cluster, its the white plastic part the cable connects to. The speed sensor sends a signal to the ECU to tell the computer how fast the truck is moving. I would also suggest buying, or borrowing from a friend, a scan tool that can show live data. This will let you know if the computer is getting a speed signal or not and can really help pinpoint where in the system the problem is.

Nice video. My question is did you lubricate the speedometer cable when you had the cluster out? Mine makes noise when it's cold and I'm hoping I can just spray something down the inside of the cable from the top that will loosen it up again. Not sure what kind of lubricant I should use, something light viscosity like WD 40 or silicone, or something a bit more tacky that will stick to the inside of the cable sheath better? Also, did it look like there was enough space to spray something down the cable or is it sealed at the top? Thanks in advance! Mark
