The "wrongdoing" didn't end 10 generations ago. White supremacy is alive and well in the here and now. I'm a lot more concerned with addressing that concretely than I am with some ambiguous notion of "paying reparations". Short of abolishing oppressive social relations, what sort of payment could possibly be meaningful? And I have to admit that I'm not a fan of your proposed solutions, either. Job opportunities and improved educational resources may (or may not) improve the standing of some marginalized individuals, but if our aim is to end racism then those things miss the mark completely, I think. The volatility and uncertainty of self-reproduction and the class stratification engendered by capitalism can really only be solved by doing away with the system entirely. Even that doesn't guarantee that racism would be eradicated, but it's a necessary condition I think. And let's not forget that imperialism and colonialism factor into this as well. In a sense, I actually think native american reservations and poor black neighborhoods (for example) can be thought of as internal colonies. I can't really speak to the bit about education and race in the UK, but I wouldn't mind seeing some sources for it. @@benji4177

@@hook-line-and-anarchy4720 I believe in giving everyone equal opportunity to succeed, regardless of race. I don't deny that in certain impoverished communities (eg black and native american) there are undeniable issues in education ect. I think the lack of opportunities in these communities is why people turn to crime or alcoholism, i don't think this is from a systematic racsim , rather than a lack of resources. I'd be interested to hear how you would intend to " do away with the system" and what your stance is on far left extremism and communism which is running rampant on our college campuses.
@hook-line-and-anarchy47205 жыл бұрын
I believe in abolishing "success", which also implies its necessary counterpart "failure". The issues in education are symptoms of the problem, but they are not themselves the root issue. To even be able to talk about lack of "opportunity", we have to take for granted that we live in a society where people are not in control of their own means of existence, where they must sell their lives and labor to others in order to reproduce themselves, and where "freedom" is measured primarily in terms of consumption of commodities, all regulated by a system of impersonal, arbitrary rules backed ultimately by the threat of physical violence. The issues plaguing communities of color are not isolated or coincidental. Neighborhood segregation, school segregation, the school-to-prison pipeline, double standards and discrimination in the so-called criminal justice system, environmental racism, just to name a few examples, are very much systemic. The historical functions of whiteness and racism under capitalism have been to ensure division in the working class, and the creation and maintenance of a secondary labor market constituted by workers with inferior protections and bargaining power, so that they can be worked harder and paid lower wages, etc. The criminalization of immigrants serves the same purpose. My stance on "far left extremism and communism which is running rampant on our college campuses" is that I sincerely wish it was actually true. I'm not especially interested in elaborating specifically on how capitalism might be done away with here on some youtube comment. I can recommend some books and readings if you're interested. @@benji4177

This isn't weird or boring at all. This is a refreshing and much-needed breakdown of toxic reactionary talking points. Nicely done.

"Toxic" can be defined as "anything I don't like."
@adomaster1235 жыл бұрын
Zorro9129 no it really can’t. I don’t like Batman vs Superman, is it toxic. Toxic ideologies actively advocate or have the logical endpoint of causing harm to thousands or millions or people for the sake of imagined reward. Fundamentalist Islam is toxic. The alt-right is toxic. Toxic is defined.
@Zorro91295 жыл бұрын
@@adomaster123 Yet that is completely arbitrary based on ideology. I consider multiculturalism and so-called "diversity" toxic as it has caused harm to millions of Americans and Europeans. I consider Islam toxic but most Muslims do not and they consider it something that has benefitted millions rather than harmed them. Many progressives consider a stronger Christian traditionalism "toxic" yet do not comparatively view pro-Muslim politics and identitarianism as toxic. You can claim anything can cause harm to millions of people, like "toxic" video games. Logically backing that up is far harder.
@JDahl-sj5lk5 жыл бұрын
Adomaster123 Logical endpoint in causing harm to millions? Problem is that even with such a definition it's still way to vague. The Haber-Bosch method of making ammonia for fertiliser feeds the world; and is key to making ammunition on industrial scale. So with scientific inventions you very often have both harm and good depending on use. Cannot the same be said of many ideological reasons and ideas? Take Shaun, this channel as an example; He's good at arguing points and may cause some good, at the same time he comes of as a prick and may very well reinforce anti feminism in people even shifting them into alt right. I know that's a stretch, but the reason I see the "anti SJW" gateway so appealing to many is because of 2 main reasons; 1) the conservative or even racist arguments make sense on a very basic straightforward level 2) you find so much shit on the left (that the main left doesn't seem to be able to properly distance themselves from, I'm left btw), that a reaction to this can lead you away from the more sensible left I confess, most times I see the word "toxic" it immediately leave a bad taste in my mouth. It's been overused and misused. I've then seen an article labelled "toxic masculinity" where I immediately thought "here we go again..." but I read the article and in that instance toxic masculinity actually made sense. Although, I think it would have been far more influential if they had not used that wording. It's like; is the point to reach those who already agree or those who didn't know, disagree, or had no stance? Drifting a bit here. But I hope you get my point.
@sananguliyev49405 жыл бұрын
@@JDahl-sj5lk I understand what you mean, but I think your opponent is right on this one. We all have different understanding of good and bad. To a religious person piety is good, spreading irreligiousness is bad, therefore anti-god debates are toxic. To a more left wing person organized religion is toxic, therefore getting rid of it is good. To a nazi guy multiculti is toxic as pureblood is good (talking about all nazis btw, not only white ones). Also, even things you consider good, could be bad for others. Like "anti-white" ideas like talking about horrors of colonialism may be considered morally good (which I think they are), but coming from a "brown" country I see that the effects of this is that people from my region start blaming literally everything on the West, rejecting everything from the West and refusing to improve. Personally I think that this enables toxic ideas in my region. So yeah, toxic is subjective, harm is subjective, and improvement in one place could lead to harm in the other

So this is one side of the story. To be fair here he actually does say that the term is often used as a substitute for the buzzword "white genocide". However as you clarified yourself he never said that "white genocide" would be good not even jokingly. And I feel confident in the asumption that he would not say that, mostly because genocides of any a people are objectively terrible and also a very serious topic. However I think there is more to the whole case: The replacement theory predicts that white people will loose the status of majority in the relativey near future. Shaun does confront this idear with several major arguments: 1. "Not being the majority" and "being a minority" are two very different things. Just as "not being the majority" and "actually being oppressed" are two EXTREMELY different things. 2. The predictions for this replacement (not being a majority anymore!) settle on something like 50 -100 years in the future, which is not so imminent after all. 3. The idear that white people could actually die out is far more unlikely and would happen even later. Also and more importantly: It can only work under the current definition, which considers the child of e.g. one white and one black parent a black person even thou half their family is white - even when the parents are divorced and they had little to no contact with the black part of their family. 4. The idear that western or white culture goes away due to immigration is forgetting about how the immigrants can and will intergrate themself into the western countrys taking over and carrying on the predominant culture. (All while admittedly changing some parts of it. Culture is subject to constant change.) 5. And most importantly: All these idears only work under the asumption that one can predict the future by current trends, which is unreasonable. It is far more likely for the west to go down economically or the immigration stopping for some othe reason, before any kind of so called "replacement" can take place.

Im sure some of them just did it because the private schools were nice, and not due to racism, but the reason they are so much more appealling is certainly from a history of racisim and segregation. A few of them, if i remember right, were public but became private in order to self segregate after it became law to desegregate. That may be a bit inaccurate though, i havent lived there for several years.

The issue is that people believe we live in a meritocratic system in which people are born with equal opportunities. So they assume that the economic struggles faced disproportionately by black folks in america are indicative of some internal failure or inferiority. Though many won't use those terms, that's almost certainly what they believe. So first off, people need to be convinced to look at the system of class and its many arms of oppression, how its affected our culture, and what outcomes it has for the "other." They need to be willing to accept that the system is flawed, and they might have found success and stability because of an unjust advantage. How do we convince them of that. And more importantly, once we do, how do we then convince them fight earnestly against it. Otherwise people will literally go on believing that the unequal conditions are the just outcome of meritocracy. I know it's fucked up. But I've heard some white people pretty soberly pretty much tell me that.

I do believe that all people are equal in that all of us have the potential to achieve greatness and do great things. Sure, all of our skills are different, but they're all equally valuable to society. For example, I don't see a doctor's skillset as any more or less valuable than an artist, or a sports player. Yeah, it's like when someone says to me "Black people are more likely to be criminals." and I say "Black people are more likely to be _arrested."_ and they can't fathom that I've said anything different. I remember when IMDb forums were still a thing, on the 11/22/63 board someone said "Good thing there's no racism anymore." Despite how it sounds they were apparently not being sarcastic, so I did a google search on studies for racial bias, and I brought out all of these links, and summerized them, including: whites are less likely to be arrested for marijuana possession, despite volunteering on surveys that they smoke just as much, if not more; the disproportionate targeting of minorities and poor neighborhoods over white rich neighborhoods, preventing a fair sample of each; and the fact that blacks are likely to get prison sentences that are three times longer than whites. Then someone reading the summaries in the thread said "When!? Now!? Or 1963?" They couldn't fathom the possibility that things could still be this bad, regarding racial inequality in America, and it turns out I had just taught somebody something. Not the person I was talking to, but someone reading in. I wish'ed he'd read the evidence I presented, and not just the summaries, but the information got through. So, while this *is* largely preaching to the choir, to the uninitiated but curious, or the... "open minded" racist... (never thought I'd say that) rebuttals like this are extremely valuable, because anybody intelligent enough to listen to the facts is likely to see them for what they are. It can be an antidote to the Dunning-Kruger effect.
@werewolf43586 жыл бұрын
I find that a funny term. "Open minded racist". Not because I think it's impossible, but because I've met people like that and the overwhelming majority of the time they wound up that way because of sensationalism. Racist arguments are much snappier and have much more punch, and are thus far more visible, than reasonable well thought out arguments to the contrary. So oftentimes they just flat out never see the real data unless you practically shove their faces in it. (Hopefully in a polite, respectful manner, but... y'know.) Which does mean I'm kind of bothered when people say something to the effect of "all racists are horrible irredeemable people that need to be locked up" and get mad when I say "actually you're wrong, and we should try to be understanding and help to educate them because using aggressive rhetoric saying they should be locked up because they were never taught the facts will only further push them away and create more racists over-all." Tl;dr: sometimes I ramble for no real reason. Have a good one.

Thue Morse I suppose that can be true actually if you'er talking about "mild" racism where they generally and vaguely think white people are better than black people. But I still feel that's a sort of excuse. In the age of the internet there's no reason for being ignorant. Especially racists that spend all their time researching things around race. They pick the information that suits them and purposely ignore the ones that don't fit their position. They want white people to be superior because they like the idea of it not just because they're ignorant. So if you present them with evidence that says otherwise, they'll reject it and continue being "ignorant''. I don't call that ignorance I call that bias. If it's any kind of ignorance it's a willful one, not a genuine ignorance Also you don't have to worry about racists being murdered. That won't happen
@TheSamcrittenden6 жыл бұрын
Thue Morse It depends on the issue though. When it comes to white and black americans that come to Korea looking to score and end up raping people, those guys can go die. These people are like fully functioning car engines without an ignition switch. it's not the car's fault for not having an ignition switch, but those of us who are mechanics can slowly but surely do something to correct that problem so the car get get itself running again.

There's a point to be made about role of the race in basketball, somewhat analogous to that about policing. It may be that black youth gets more encouragement from their trainers to pursue a career in basketball just because trainers see slightly more potential in them. It may be that they identify more with prominent basketball players and thus are harder to discourage from this particular sport. Reality and our perception of it are codependent in many ways.

Now schools in nicer areas, such as Stoneman Douglas in Parkland(the same from the school shooting), have a lot of nicer textbooks, newer computers and such, and overall students there receive a better education. But schools in the hood, such as Deerfield Beach High in Deerfield Beach, get a lot less funding from the state, therefore students don't receive the newer and nicer textbooks that those in Parkland do, or the new computers, or all of the other nicer things that folks living in nice neighborhoods have, and therefore do worse on certain state-wide(or at least county-wide)tests due to a lack of certain information that the other students in nicer areas receive from being better equipped with the tools to educate the students

And also doesn't limit it to just white people or any other race it also allows for sexism and sexual orientationism, gender identity-ism etc. If it's possible to catogrize people whatever side you're on you probably have at least a subconscious bias about people in and out of your group and probably different levels for different dimensions of "isms" it accounts for women who are sexist towards men, gay people biggoted towards straight people, and even non biggoted people against biggoted people, you can't fully escape boggotry but you can do whatever you can to mitigate it 👌

I went back and viewed Milo's video just now to properly follow the full thread of discussion. The statement that an argument surrenders any notion of a productive outcome once it reaches the trivial level of word definitions is certainly true. It is unstated however, that the argument can and often does continue to be engaging and entertaining. That's why I'm enjoying these videos so much. I like the tug of war of the contextual rope, I like alternate definitions and I like instructions to understand and observe them. I like puzzles of communication in general. Here we are now, down the fractal rabbit-hole: Explaining the need for context in a statement given as a reaction to an observation about a reaction.
