Biggest question is... "How do you resolve all these contracts coming up??" And my answer is the typical answer when it comes to managing successful relationships... good communication! All these players know about the salary situation... get them all together! Tavares is already in at 11 mil, get Matthews, Marner, Nylander together. Ask them if they want to continue to play together, or if they'd rather go get more money elsewhere. Matthews could definitely get 11, but maybe he'll take 10 or 9.5. Marner could get 10 if he continues on this pace, but maybe he takes 9 or 8.5. Basically... if all of them take a 1-2 mil paycut, they can stay together and do something special. If you approach the issue by talking to them together as a group, I think you're more likely to make them all happy while also signing them for less. The whole point is to keep them together, so it only makes sense to speak to them as a group, see how they all feel about it. If managed correctly, no one will feel pressured one way or the other, it's just about knowing where the players' interests lie, and then the organization can move forward with a plan in mind. I think something similar happened with Bozak and JVR, and a bunch of other longtime leafs that just left. The reason I say that is because they all left on good terms. Not a single person seemed salty or disillusioned. I wasn't a fan of the organization before, but I did become a fan again when they were headed in the right direction. Jets will always come 1st, but being from Toronto means that I'll always be happy to see the leafs successful too :)

Steve, Adam & Jesse, I can tell you from experience that the World Cup is unlike anything you've ever experienced. Back in 2006 the World Cup was in Germany (I was 13 then) and one day we made a school trip to Cologne, one of the host cities. Coming off the train, I can't tell you how many people from all over the world there were. Swedes, English (those two played that day), Africans, Asians... Everyone was just partying and having a great time. With each other! I've never seen such joy, such fraternity in a single place. And that was the case all over Germany! Truly the happiest summer I've ever had. In 2026 the WC will likely come to Edmonton, Montreal and Toronto. So even if you can't actually attend a game, get ready for an unbelievable experience :)

Oh boy this was fun to watch.. Thanks Toronto for helping the Islanders. Losing John Turdvares was the best thing that could have happened. Ironically the Islanders had more points than the leafs the following season. Signing JT was a huge mistake. One they still pay for.

How come everyone is forgetting that the Leafs signed a big, mean, right handed defenseman with a hard shot and can skate, hit, fight, move the puck... hes not a teenage boy prospect from the AHL hes a 25 year old 6'2" 210 LBS man that plays against other men in the KHL.... he has a $950,000 cap hit and hes already on our team we signed him in May... his name is Igor Ozhiganov and seems like the type of player people are saying we should trade Nylander for but we already have him signed....

Isles fans don't want to face it, but their team's front office became complacent. They didn't build a team around JT to contend for about a decade, and they underestimated his desire to win a Cup. Toronto provided him an opportunity to do so. The only ones isles fans should be blaming is the front office.

Different experience heading into this though for me. It was dropped by Maple Leafs Hotstove almost an hour before Friedman finally threw his hat on it where Tavares was going. So it was more of a slightly uneasy wait just sitting there for more to chime in on it. Now to have fun with where things go from here. A crazy talented team that is going to be tough to handle. And yeah I'm sick of seeing this "The Leafs can't be contenders without defensive upgrades." Bull! This team is has everything they need right now to be Cup Contenders. Whether they fulfill their potential or not is up to them. But they have a darn good goalie, some solid D-men, and a forward group that is utterly insane. Yeah they could and should look to improve the blue line. It's the weakest element. But they are drafting and developing so it isn't as if they are unaware. Quite frankly the blue line needs to be good enough for that forward group and Andersen to do the job.

Thing about be well rounded about a subject (all sports in this case) is that there are is something to being a specialist. If someone was to spend all their time focusing on a specialist topic (like, JUST hockey), chances are they will have deeper insight on it. When i talk to people who can flip over to world cup, baseball, college football etc etc its cool, i like it but unless your whole day-to-day is sports in general, you are probably scratching the surface of each.

Looking back 3 years after the signing, probably one of the worst days for the franchise in history, completely handcuffed the franchise financially, and forced almost all of their young depth out the door. You already had a Tavares in Kadri and you were paying him less then half of what you’re paying JT.

Honestly I would go Matthews, Tavares, Rielly or Kadri for 3rd alternate

Sorry Tavares is not a generational talent. Lets be realistic here, he is a very good player but in his 10 year pro career he has never even scored 40 goals or got even close to getting 100 points. When you are referring to "generational talents" there is literally only 4 guys in the league you could safely say are generational talents and that would be McDavid, Crosby, Malkin and Ovechkin.
