😮Very well done! I wish you could have helped me 53 years ago...my coach was only learning drills from magazines. I won several times at 13-6, but still had trouble both in practice and meets getting to vertical! I had to ride the pole back down to the runway many times.

I did a similar series like this I found on your YT channel with our middle school and beginner HS vaulters. Excellent!

Hi Shawn, 3-Weeks ago, my son was diagnosed with a pubic ramus stress fracture. He will miss the entire 2023 high school T&F season. Last year as a H.S. Freshman he cleared 13' 2" even though he was limited with back pain due to a long last step and learning to run faster - happily that has not been a problem this year. Do you have any recommendations for training, of course excluding running & jumping, for at least another 5 weeks and then how to slowly work in jumps? Since he is missing his Sophomore year, do you have any advise on "advertising" himself to universities coming his Junior Year? Also, we didn't see you at the Reno PV Event this year; hopefully we will in the future. any chance of coming out to California, Los Angeles area?

Great question, I'm no a doctor by any means. But I've always taken the slow build approach. For example we would want to avoid any really high intensity and big pounding. So when i would come back from back or lower leg injuries I'd start doing running workouts in the deep end of a pool so there wasn't any pounding. Then i'd move to the shallow end, then to a bike, then to walking steep hills. On those hills i may move to jogging and then running. Id find less steep hills and follow the same progressions. Then move to grass jogging, then the grass running. then the track jogging and the track running. So on and so forth. Keep in mind that if there's ever "Bad Pain" go back a progression, he's not in a hurry. For recruiting, id contact Brooke Rasnick. She's a wizard. I'll try to make it to Reno next year! Save a high five for me!. I'd love to get out to LA for something fun like a camp or street meet. We'll see!

@@TeamHootPoleVault Thanks for all the info. His coach Steve Tully, Mike Tully’s little brother, and I both agree to have him not jump until August just to keep that pubic ramus safe. After looking at your insight, we’ll have a plan so he has plenty of exercises to keep him lean while getting stronger and retaining (hopefully improving) his speed.

Great video. We met at MITCA last month. I noticed that you "landed" on your feet in the drill in the pit. I know it isn't really vaulting but I want to emphasize Safety Rule #1 as well. Thoughts?

Totally! I have rule 1 as don't let go of the pole and rule 2 to not land on your feet in the pit. I think i mentioned at MITCA that when we get into the pit i avoid it altogether, or if i have to gamble a bit, i only allow 2 lefts/4 steps. That way they aren't as high in the air and they aren't moving as fast. So with less forces the risk decreases. Then we get to the next phase as fast as we can to adhere to rule 2. hope that makes sense.

Hey!! Can you make a video on helping vaulters not change their steps if there is anything? Thanks(:

This usually comes from stride inconsistency. In order to make stride length consistent focus on running with good tall posture and getting your knees about level with your hips for every step. Keep working at it until you can gradually move your legs faster with every step while still getting your knees high. it will almost feel like a bound or high knee skip without actually skipping.

Great drills. One thing I notice is your elbow (left) is not on the inside of the pole on these drills. I have always been told your elbow needs to be on the inside of the pole to help with future turning and inversion, especially on straight pole drills. Yet, on these drills you don't worry about it. Can you explain why?

I've found when the vaulter has an early enough turn then the arm naturally goes where it needs to go. Also, I've found when myself or other coaches have vaulters pull that arm in on stright pole drills, its a giant pain to break that habit when we move to bent pole vaulting. So I don't create the hard habit to break. If you've had a kid plant and their bottom arm smacks them in the face... you know what i'm talking about
