It's the question everyone buying a premium electric car wants the answer to - which is better, Tesla's Model 3 or the brand new Polestar 2?
The Model 3 has been a roaring success since it launched, mixing a long range with a desirable image and a cool interior, but Polestar thinks it can beat the Model 3 at its own game. It too has a long range and some would say it looks cooler and has a more premium interior.
Nicki and Tom have put the two against each other in this shootout that's not to be missed. Did they come to the right verdict? Which is your favourite? Leave your comments below.

doogieAfro I own an EV - MG ZS - and it’s range is perfectly acceptable for 99% of my journeys; the Polestar of course has a far larger range. My point is, how much range do you actually need and thus how often will you actually need public chargers? When I go on road trips the answer is destination chargers. The feature set of the Polestar is more than enough for me and, for me, I prefer both the interior and exterior of it. So, for all the advantages the Tesla has really don’t cut it for me and dare I say others. I have been a Tesla admirer since the launch of the Model S. They have to be applauded for solely making what was very much a niche product ‘mainstream’. However, now they’re making 100,000+ cars a year, they have to be considered a proper manufacturer and have to be treated accordingly. Whereas in the past we gave them some leeway, now they MUST resolve their quality control. As well as the numerously documented faults e.g paint, panel gaps etc, a friend of mine has had no end of faults with his Model 3. The faults were such that you have to doubt whether the car had ever been QC’d!! And, god forbid you want Tesla to repair them - good luck there.

Sustainable energy? What do you think charges an Electric Car? We don't have enough renewables for our current needs let alone those of electrifying everything. How many miles do you need to drive an EV for before it becomes more green than a normal car? I wish people would stop pretending EV are much greener, they aren't. If youre concerned about imate you should focus on heating and cooling property. I dustry and construction, not to mention gases like NO2 from industrial and agricultural sources. Buy an electric car if you want, bit you'll make fuck all difference to climate change.

As a Tesla fan, I love the Polestar. Given the option, I would probably go for the Tesla Model 3 but only just. The Polestar is really beautiful, especially on the inside and looks much more luxurious. And the Android operating system is really good. I would definitely take the Polestar over the Jaguar iPace, Merc EQC and Audi E-Tron. A little bit smaller, more practical and efficient and much better value than all of those. Polestar have really hit it out of the park with this car.

FINALLY! a Polestar 2 review that isn’t with the 5,000 quid optional performance pack, but you shouldn’t have done a head-to-head with the Model 3 Performance, it’s more expensive than the Polestar
@LunnarisLP
@LunnarisLP 3 жыл бұрын
M3P is 48,690$ currently, while the Polestar 2 is apparently going to cost (looked at a couple of sources) anything between 52.000 to 60.000$ as starting price. The range is because some already deducted tax credits of up to 7500$. So even after tax credits tesla no longer gets, the Polestar 2 would in it's base configuration cost more than the polestar 2.. Obv. prices may differ from country to country and until Tesla is starting production in europe they will have to pay those ~10% VAT for most countries in Europe, but generally speaking the Polestar 2 in it's base configuration is more expensive in production and costs more than the Model 3 Performance.

@@MrPikkoz I never said it was, but the first comment (in my eyes) implied, that the M3P would cost more, but the cost is only higher due to taxes. So comparing them head to head actually makes quiet a lot of sense and the P2 actually has the higher production cost, so in theory the P2, considering more money was used making it, should beat the M3P. The first comment made it look the other way around. This isn't about the world revolving around the US either, I'm from germany myself.

SSSooo... you just compared performance version of Tesla, with the base version of Polestar. OOOkkk.... Then you said that you would buy tesla over the polestar because you don't have access to home charging. well... The entire point of taking care of the batteries is to load them at home, as slow as possible, and not rely on superchargers. Maybe I am weird, but I really prefer to have a large electric tailgate rather than a car which accelerate in 3 seconds instead of 4.
@biplabkumarghosh6300

I believe that was done to keep the prices of both car equal. A performance Polestar 2 with Performance upgrades costs much more than Model 3 Performance with Performance upgrades According to rumour, Europe might get Tesla Model 3 with electric tailgates soon. And even if you use Superchargers only, it will still just have 1-2% more degradation per year than usual

Most people don’t buy cars because they are just technically better on-paper! From an EV perspective the Tesla is obviously still the better option, but as an overall experience I would lean towards the Polestar. The interior / infotainment system seems a much better mix of physical controls & displays with a more intuitive interface. I mean do you really want to be messing with the touch screen to set the wiper speed, come on Tesla! The model 3 has the huge advantage of the supercharger network which makes it the clear winner for travelling right now. But this is a temporary issue, within at most 5 years I would say the public network will be on par with Tesla's. At which point I believe the Polestar would be a better long distance cruiser, other reviews testing it out on motorways / highways show it to be almost eerily quiet at speed.
@natodemon1
@natodemon1 3 жыл бұрын
@doogieAfro No, in fact I'm not really judging the cars as much as their ecosystems. Tesla's supercharger network is fantastic and a big advantage to any Tesla owner over relying on the currently lacking public network. But that public network will improve, it has to soon if mass EV adoption is to happen. As far as the cars, I judge them on what they are today. I prefer the interior design and interface of the Polestar and the reports of it's handling and high-speed comfort. As much as Tesla will no doubt improve their design / quality in the future, that will have little effect on a car bought right now. Changes in the public charging network are external and any EV bought today will be able to take advantage of an improved network. At the end of the day it's personal preference, if I travelled long distances by car the model 3 would definitely be higher up on my list.

Look at the old Model S compared to the updated Model S interior. The Y and 3 will need a similar update by 2024/2025. The Polestar 2 is more modern in terms of its materials but some aspects too will be dated by the Polestar 3's interior approach. Overall, the Polestar 2 feels rock solid. RE: looks - The Polestar 2 caught my eye from its first showing, inside and out. (I find the latest generation of Volvos to be beautifully realized, too.) But the Model 3 manages to turn my head in person, always exceeding any expectations I have from photos. Particularly the front end, which feels unfinished to me in pictures (still or moving) but suggests Porsche-like sculpting seen 'in the flesh.' I think I'd be delighted with either of them - with maybe the difference that Polestar seems to embody the present moment, while Tesla is occupying a space 'out there' , as Nicki put it.

Why are you comparing a Tesla 3 performance with 490hp against a Polestar 2 that has 407hp? Of course the tesla is going to be faster then the Polestar 2. Compare it to the Tesla model 3 long range instead. The funny thing is, even if the tesla 3 long range has less weight and more hp they both do 0-100km/h in 4,7 seconds. This is because the Polestar 2 has more torque then the Tesla Model 3 long range.

Model 3 LR is advertised at 4.4sec 0-60, not 4.7. Funny thing is most people seem to get somewhere between 4.1-4.3 sec when tested in the real world, so Tesla seems to be underselling it. If that happens to not be good enough you can still upgrade it by software to be sub 4 sec. for 2000 USD.

While I like the tech of the Tesla, I'm not a fan of either the bland, jellymould exterior or the too minimalist interior again it's just a bit meh. But my biggest gripe against the Tesla, is that screen. Tesla have set a trend followed by almost all others in having so much controlled by a touch screen. On real world bumpy roads, you have a real problem adjusting just about anything while on the move without looking at the screen. Way too much to distract you from the dangerous stuff going on outside the car.

In the UK any family with 1-2 kids won't be driving more than 5-6 hours at a time. That's at most one big charge (30-45mins) and "maybe" one small quick charger (10-15mins) to get you to your destination. The whole "Tesla Network" is a major factor in the US or the EU. In the UK ... not many families are going more than 300miles in one day. There are now good majority of 150kW chargers in the UK, and the gap between Rapid Tesla and Generic Chargers is closing fast ... plus I'd say just as many V3 Tesla chargers are there are 150kw+ CCS Charger now - just not at service stations so minor detours maybe required.

A much better buying experience that does not involve the low life that inhabit car dealerships. no haggling (though some people like this - just remember you are not the professional regarding this). Has better suspension - Volvo are known for their crashy ride - I have had 2. Polestar 2 not mentioned Quieter drive - better sound insulation. The google system allows any certified apps to be installed just like on the phone (Note that this is not many apps yet as they are very careful about security) They are different cars and it is fine to not to like one. The polestar is more traditional including being built on an existing chassis (which is a disadvantage) while the Tesla is very minimalist but still feature rich but can be off putting to some. For the people that complain about Tesla build quality - they are much better in the model 3, though the Y still sucks, and you need to walk down your road looking at the shit panel gaps on the mainstream cars to understand that this all now some sop for people that hate Tesla. I hope both these 2 cars do well, they are ICE competitors and don't compete against each other - just read the comments - as they are very different expressions of a mid-range sports saloon with high performance. @@davemitchell3998 service and build issues that exist on youtube all the time, but rarely ever happen in real life. An article about 3 rear bumpers coming off in the rain when Tesla has just recently hit over a million cars sold is kinda not a biggy, but if you watch 5 videos about a single incident, then maybe it starts to seem like Tesla actually has massiv issues. Sure their paint quality is not the best and sometimes they have small panel gaps, but that's it and those cases get more rare every day, actually this stuff barely happens any more.

What about diriving comfort, smoothness and road noise??
@rikh8796
@rikh8796 3 жыл бұрын
Driving comfort for Polestar depends on whether you take the standard 19” or 20” wheels or performance package with 20” wheels and dampers. The 20” wheels also come with sportier tires, so overall the 19” should be the most comfortable of them all. That said, in my test drive I found the performance ride a little stiff but still comfortable enough. No idea what smoothness entails. Road noise is supposedly better in the Polestar 2.
@psandbergnz
@psandbergnz 3 жыл бұрын
@@rikh8796, road and wind noise are important comparatives especially for this class of car. If you don't discuss it at all, then your report is deficient. I have heard that the Tesla is quite noisy. If so, that would rule it out for me.
@rikh8796
@rikh8796 3 жыл бұрын
Paul Sandberg yep, it’s missing from this review. I tried to answer the comfort as good as I can, but I haven’t driven enough in a Tesla Model 3 to compare it against. From what I gathered from other reviews the Tesla is supposedly noisier. Ultimately I think one should do a test drive.
@psandbergnz
@psandbergnz 3 жыл бұрын
@@rikh8796 , I think it would have been helpful if you had both spent about equal time driving the two test vehicles. Then you could have given a more balanced verdict. I think the Polestar wins hands down in terms of interior looks. But driving comfort and refinement are very important issues to discuss.

I primarily want my car, any car, to drive safe and comfortable. With good lane assist and all that. I don’t need Netflix and such while driving so I really could care less. When I’m not driving my phone works perfectly fine for those things. Besides it can all be added later OTA. Priorities 🤷🏻‍♂️
