I’ve always thought this. McCartney is at once the most celebrated, famous and loved rock star ever - and the most underrated. In total the post-Beatles work is probably better than what he did with The Beatles. But not nearly as appreciated.

He's like the Spielberg of music. He can do every genre, didn't really care about his "style", has been a little cheesy at times, had the most successful career ever in the business, is utterly respected by his pairs, and yet is always a bit undervalued compared to Kubrick, Fellini, Scorsese or Bowie, Lennon, Mercury for Macca. Maybe it did seem to easy for them and all these different genres they explored were a little too disconcerting for critics.

I'm always amazed when people are surprised by how incredibly good Paul's voice is. This is the guy who sang Oh! Darling and Helter Skelter in The Beatles. He is the man of 1000 voices. Just listen to You Never Give Me Your Money, he has about 5 different vocal styles _on one song_ !! But performances like this partly contribute to why his voice hasn't lasted as well as it might have. He thrashed his vocal chords when he was younger. As a singer myself, my throat hurts when I listen to what he does live sometimes 😂 He's still the best of the best though.

You're right. His bass playing is genius. I especially like the sound of the Rickenbacker that you can hear on "Wings over america". Solid sound with polyurethane muted. There is a picture on Wikipedia of Denny Rain sandwiching urethane under the bridge of the bass to make it sound like it. I imagine that even in A day in the life, Paul is using a Rickenbacker. It's sad that Paul only uses Hofner in his current live performances. In an interview for the current tour, Paul said, "The Rickenbacker is heavy, so I only play it occasionally now."

McCartney always had that voice. The most versatile of anyone (he displayed it during The Beatles era, too.) The largest range of almost any male singer, ever. Crazy good. Watch the rest of RockShow. It’s fantastic from start to finish. And I just finished a Wings deep dive. You won’t be disappointed. He deserves much more credit for what he did with all the versions of the band. Too bad they were in the shadow of The Beatles.

With all due respect, (and I do LOVE your reactions!) you have a LONG WAY TO GO before you even scratch the surface of Paul McCartney, with or without The Beatles! And that's not even addressing how much you still have to learn with The Beatles! This whole "Wings Over America" live show is just fantastic, despite not-so-great video quality! The "Wings Over America" LP is a keeper too! On The Beatles' "Magical Mystery Tour" album, there was a Paul song called "Fool on the Hill", which showcases Paul's beautiful, melodic, "sweet" voice! But the cool thing is the song is about himself, and he refers to himself as "the man of a thousand voices". That truly is ONE of Paul's superpowers; He truly did have so many different vocal styles and tricks he used throughout his career. Don't know if you've heard it yet, but to get one of the first examples of Paul's "tough" voice, listen to the Beatles' song "Lady Madonna" For an even BIGGER dose of that, listen to their song "Helter Skelter", which is felt by many to be the prototype for "heavy metal" music.

This particular lineup of Wings truly rocked. Lead guitarist (teenage phenom) Jimmy McCullough was granted a rare degree of freedom by Paul: He was allowed to improvise the guitar intro to "Soily" each night. Seek out "Wings Over America", the live triple album of this tour. Pauls's big, booming Rickenbacker bass is mixed front and center and he puts on a two hour clinic. (No muddy little Hofner on this tour - Paul came to rock!) "Soily" is the heaviest Paul gets outside of "Helter Skelter", but if you're a fan, like me, of Paul's harder side - wow! - there is a TON on this album to enjoy. I hesitate to even list the tracks, there's so many - hell - here goes anyway: Venus and Mars/Rockshow, Let Me Roll It, Jet, Call Me Back Again, Letting Go, Beware My Love, Live and Let Die, Medicine Jar, Hi Hi Hi.) Stadium rock was all the rage in the mid-'70's and Wings delivers. (P.S. Paul only does, what, 5 or 6 Beatle tunes? This is a Wings tour.) And, yes, Paul is criminally underrated as a rock vocalist. Great "screamers?" Cobain, Lennon, Morrison, etc. Paul is typecast as a softie, but I'll gladly provide a list of his screaming to all who may be interested. "Monkberry Moon Delight" from his solo "Ram" is quite possibly his apex, although I can also point you to some very surprising tracks very late in his career as well..

When Paul was a kid, one of his inspirations was Little Richard. Paul had one of the best, most versatile voices in rock. Perhaps somewhat limited in that he came from the era before modern rock and often tended toward milder sounds. But they also did "Helter Skelter" and other songs that are commonly credited with taking rock into harder sounds. Paul liked distorted guitars and raspy vocals, right along with orchestral strings and choirs. While it was John singing lead on "Twist and Shout," you can tell the Beatles even early on had an appreciation for strained vocals.

With Jimmy McCullouch on lead guitar , Denny Laine on rythm guitar and vocals , Joe English on drums and backing vocals , Linda McCartney on keyboards and backing vocals , and Paul McCartney on lead vocals bass piano and rythm guitar.

I never saw Wings in concert. But, in the early 80's their drummer Denny Seiwell did a concert at my college. Awesome! He has a discography himself worth looking into!

I saw him in late 80s at RFK stadium in Wash DC. I’ve been to many concerts but he was the best. His Live Or Let Die performed in stadiums was the best.

First time watching your channel. I was 19 when I saw this concert in 1976 at The Summit in Houston, and I can remember it like it was yesterday. That was an amazing song to close the concert with. That was the first time a laser effect was used, to my knowledge, and it looked amazing you would look up and see it above your heads, moving around. The crowd went wild. It left everyone wanting more and more. I still can't believe I was lucky enough to have experienced that concert live. I now have a Blu-ray of it and watch the entire concert over and over and never get tired of it. What a great memory.

SAME FOR ME!! I saw this concert in '76 in Detroit, I was 29 years old. Last time I saw Paul in concert at THAT point, was 10 years earlier in 1966, in Cleveland, Ohio on Aug. 14 th, when I was 19. It was an AMAZING concert and I too have ROCKSHOW on DVD and watch it a LOT!! I also saw it on the movie screen when it was released to the movie theatres in 1980, my friends and I went to see it 6 times!!

That scream is part of the song, not a random audience member! And yes, Paul could really crank it up (listen to the Beatles song "Helter Skelter" - sometimes called the first heavy metal song!). Paul didn't go hard on many songs, but when they wanted to, the Beatles and Wings in particular could really rock it out. FWIW, a lot of us who usually sing quiet songs like nothing better than to rock out occasionally.

Listen to Helter Skelter, Oh Darling plus many more from the Beatles, and Let Me Roll It, Wildlife, Helen Wheels, Live and Let Die, Jet, plus dozens more from Paul McCartney and Wings. Paul has at least a dozen voices, and can sound very different depending on what voice he chooses to use on each song.

McCartney is one of the great rock vocalists and bass players. Wings Over America is one of the great live albums of the 70s. Macca at the heights of his live vocal and performance with a great band and set. Jimmy McCulloch on lead guitar.

It's funny back in the day we didn't think Linda McCartney knew how to play the organ because in wings over America video there are two organists I guess Paul just didn't want to put a tambourine in her hand Don't get me wrong I love the band Great reaction rock on

I was with you back then, and since the interweb was created, I have heard her "singing" isolated. She was tone deaf! I doubt her keyboards were much better. If you watch the Wings Over America concert video, she doesn't even have a sense of musical time. She will raise her arm, and then bring it down before the final note of the song...slightly early. I can't fault Paul for wanting her with him, but I feel like her "contribution" was left out of the stage mix for the audience. Her talent was definitely as a photographer. But I would buy a Linda's Greatest Hits before I would listen to 5 seconds of Yoko screeching!!😵‍💫
