Idk, I don't see issue with wanting some appreciation shown for doing housework...but it goes both ways. Like with paid work, you're expected to perform and do it well, but people still need appreciation shown in the form of positive words of affirmation and raises. But when its housework, its weird that people think it shouldn't even be acknowledged on the grounds that its expected work. That mindset goes hand in hand with a lot of stay at homes moms never feeling appreciated or fulfilled in life. Just because it's silly for Ethan to beg for a 'thanks' every time he does a minor task, it doesn't mean its gross to want appreciation either.But it is something that goes both ways and it sounds like he needs to do more to show her his gratefulness rather than pulling a blatant double standard.

@@kiraeckard7625 a thank you every now and then is always a good thing but a thank you every single time you do housework is stupid imo. You wouldn’t get that if you lived alone, why should you get a thank you every single time you do a chore? Most women never get that from their spouses

In the brief clip you showed, I don’t even get how people find this entertaining. “Boiling resentment” is interesting to say because that’s exactly how their broadcasted arguments sound. I’m sure these aren’t new things they’ve discussed, and the fact that they’re both clinging to a relationship that has this overall vibe to it feels icky to witness. If the dry humor is their form of entertainment for themselves, that’s on them. But idk how they expect anyone else to find their weird podcasts enjoyable.

I don't watch these people, so I don't know & and it's a genuine question. Is this stuff they discuss publicly, or are these just rumors and assumptions. I don't want to make more assumptions since I don't watch them, but from the clips I saw here, he strikes me as the type of guy that wouldn't "let" her get a job and focus on her own career. Seeing as he won't even let her keep her own name. And how can she deviate and persue something of her own if she's expected to do all the household chores and all the parenting by herself. Also, if she's on his podcast frequently and it gets views & generates income, that's work, and she deserves to be compensated for it. "Couples" podcast means they are doing it together & the income it generates is as much hers as it is his.

I’m autistic so I can have a lot of trouble recognizing what is & isn’t a joke, & growing up in New Jersey where there’s a prevalence of sarcasm has both helped me learn to understand social cues & confused me a lot. With the couple in this podcast I really don’t think they’re joking based on what I’ve observed from my family. Of course not every couple with dry humor will be the same, but I can’t see any signs that they’re joking here other than some awkward laughter. I have a lot to say on this topic so if people want to read, that's fine, but the TL;DR is this gives me PTSD vibes of having a guy like that as a stepdad. Worst years of my life. I don't like this idea that giving people a 'realistic' view of marriage or even just romantic relationships means putting out your personal arguments in front of the public and passing them off as 'no big deal' when you're clearly at such massive odds with each other over something. I totally respect her in terms of her reasons for wanting to keep her name even if it means hyphenating, since it's what I plan on doing if/when I marry (I mean, I literally changed my whole IRL name once already, I'm not giving it up that easily). But I know there's a time and a place for difficult discussions and serious topics with my own partner, and it's not in public venues or even just when we're around friends. Getting cranky because I'm tired or feeling like I'm not being listened to is one thing, but this... just no, man.

that first clip made me think of my ex and I's relationship which was toxic at the very least and ruined my mental health. Also with taking his last name, why don't they just hyphenate if it's such a big deal like thats an option

I think it's 50 percent issues, 50 percent being British (coming from a Brit) Edit: Okay, yeah, after seeing more clips, this is a particular brand of straight couple in Britain in that age range. I've met 100s of these. I'm not saying it's everyone, but this kind of dynamic is pretty common
@NotAnotherKuromi
@NotAnotherKuromi 11 ай бұрын
I don't think this dynamic is specific to this age range. In fact, I usually think of this type of passive agressive, confrontational avoidance, and "joking" as more common with middle-aged or older straight couples. Although maybe these are the unfortunate offspring of such couples who are unable to identify how unhealthy it is, so actively perpetuate it? I also don't think this sort of dynamic is specifically british, I am interested in reading the perceptions from those in other countries. I have lived in England and China and they both had couples who were like "I have to get back home to the wife🙄" or making "jokes" about how annoying or low quality their opposite sex partner is. I hear similar ongoing issues over housework issues but without ever getting resolved and some almost like they enjoy getting angry over the smaller issues.
@Agoraphoboy
@Agoraphoboy 11 ай бұрын
@@NotAnotherKuromi Yeah, the whining without any resolution is what i meant. I just know (as a Brit) ive met so many people like this. And its so common nobody really takes note of it here? I feel like ive seen this couple at every event i've ever been to, and some of them are still together 10+ years in. Like you said, some of them even seem to enjoy it

On the name thing, here in Québec no girl would ever take their husband's name. This thing died out in the 50's. Even older generations had a chance to revert back at some point. My grandma of 90 year old has her maiden name back even if she was never divorced. This whole thing seems sooo conservative to us, like are we living the 30's?

I don't want to come to any conclusion because I know nothing about these people, other then what is in this video. I feel like it's possibly just dry humor and banter, which is a thing between some people. But some of it does sound and feel mean spirited. But I don't know these people well enough to make jump to any conclusions.

This is a very one sided relationship from what we are being shown… sigh. SO uncomfortable to be around people like this. I feel like they use the podcast as a way to “get it all out there” without becoming a fight and can say “it’s our humor” this way too. Ther is a REAL issue here. I know UK humor is very different to US humor. I have the same type of humor. But imho, you can see/hear/feel the “real” resentments and passive aggressiveness in all these conversations. It makes me feel icky.

I’ve met a couple that was like that not only to each other but they were friends of a friend of mine and constantly roasted him while we were sitting in the car and he was just silently taking it. I obviously didn’t want to see them again. When we were alone the wife gossiped about her husband and it was very uncomfortable as well

I think ppl are overusing ‘dry sense of humor”, to me a good example of dry humor is in the show Fleabag. There are several attempts at being funny delivering lines with a dead pan expression - but these just aren’t funny, specially Bobby. They’re truly awkward, boring and then say it’s dry humor like no

I’m very attached to my my last name and was kind of freaked out at the thought of losing it when I got married but my wonderful husband without any arguments at all basically just added his last name to mine. So technically when I finally get my new SSN card with the new name on it, I can go with my birth certificate which we had to order and FINALLY get my new ID with my four names on it. No hyphens, just four names. lol First, middle, my maiden last name and his last name. He’s even been the one to contact all the appropriate places to order my birth certificate and we got that start the process for the new SSN card. Side note, for a woman at least in the US to change their name because of marriage we need a crap ton of paper work to do so, they really wannna make sure I’m not some illegal Russian bride or whatever. 😅

The dude is definitely just a sexist dude stuck in the 90’s seeing what his parents displayed as “correct gender roles “ for example he work then come home and do nothing while wife do stuff all day up until bedtime then still be expected to perform in the bedroom on top of that or his eye will wander. These types of men are a throw away. and unfortunately she’s permanently connected to that loser because of their child. Even if they break up But yeah he’s no prize . let’s just leave it at that
