I have my doubts those concrete walls are structurally sound. They may start to crumble in just a few years. If the bolts sank that far, the concrete was too wet. You should fire the contractor. You should have a structural engineer give you a risk analysis, before continuing on with those walls.

That hose running on the ground makes me think that the concrete guys used a tow behind grout pump rather than a pump truck. The aggregate may also be just pea gravel since it's almost impossible to pump 57 gravel through the little pumps. That's probably also why it's so wet. I'd either get an engineer to test what you have or tear it all down and start over.
@522Dusty
@522Dusty 2 жыл бұрын
Get your architect to verify and you should be able to recover the cost of the footers and slabs or the financial impact. I would also test the compression of the slab walls because if it was too much water that will compromise the compressive strength (they do that to get the 'stamped brick image' but these are structural walls.

Agreed. As a civil engineer if that concrete had shown up to my job it likely would have been rejected. I know materials vary from the area you are in but that looked more like mud than concrete…unless I missed something and pigment was added for a desired color.
@gungadinn
@gungadinn 2 жыл бұрын
The problem is that the testing for concrete strength is a series of cylinders that are poured at the beginning the mid point of pour and the end of pour. The cylinders are allowed to cure, removed and the concrete plug compressed in a test machine. Typically a 8-10 foot tall wall would have been poured as 2 or 3 lifts of concrete, not one. Unless edited out, I believe the reason for the soupy concrete was they either didn't want to vibrate the concrete to remove entrapped air, or were afraid the load was going to kick off if delayed. The organic material in the floor stone is un-exceptable. The stone could have been from the bottom of the storage bin.rage bin, or it could have been recycled road scrapings. It wasn't #57 stone.

I know that if you pour concrete to wet that you lose the structural integrity of the concrete. I'm not sure if I would even trust the basement walls that you have. It looks very chalky and brittle. The next Issue is, when the concrete is so wet as i saw it, it may be the concrete aggregate (gravel, stones, ...) do sink as the slab anchors did. That means the walls are more gravel at the base and more cement at the top. I would NOT put any weight, least of all a house on top of these walls !!

I would have checked the slump and taken samples. It is so important to spec out all aspects of the build and have them in the contract. Also be there to check that they are doing what the contract and specifications call out. I had a bad slab poured once because I was working and unable to monitor the pour. The last slab poured for my shop caught the contractor not installing the right amount of rebar and not in the proper spacing.

I agree, I have never seen concrete that wet, nor any concrete product with that much moisture. The bolts that were set for the plates sunk and that indicates they were all in a fuhking hurry. However, I thought since the concrete needed to fill all of those voids in the decorative part of the form, that it needed to be wetter than "normal". That was only part of the issue. If the concrete needed to be that wet, curing time would be different, which would make forming, concrete delivery, and placing those bolts, all time critical.

My dad and most of his friends were concrete masons. I have been on dozens of jobs watching and helping them work. I can tell you for a fact that here in FL, those walls would NOT meet code. Solid pour ALWAYS has to have a tied rebar skeleton, and there is a viscosity spec that must be met as well. Even after you told them to add rebar, I did not see a skeleton anywhere near the top of that wall as they poured, and that slush they were using... I wouldn't even have let them get a foot deep on any walls of mine. That they drove away like they were finished with a job well done is just mind-boggling. I feel so bad for you guys, and anyone else, who paid good money and ends up getting a bunch of half-... baked 'good enough'-ers showing up like they're actual tradesmen. Just ridiculous.

I go off to work with another crew on the site, I come back 30 minutes later and they missed the mark by a good foot. I always enjoy watching your videos. You two have done a great job on your home. I do have some thoughts about this build. First, there was not enough rebar in the walls. I have been a concrete contractor for 30-plus years, and we typically put rebar at 12" on center each way, which means a 12"x12" grid in the wall, with the rebar stubbed out of the footing. if the wall is 10" thick or more, we put two mats of rebar. Also, I would never have allowed a concrete mixture that wet to be poured for anything, much less walls. The pump truck could pump a lot lower slump design up that hill without any issues whatsoever. We pump up 5-6 floors in buildings all the time. All of the issues with this project are completely the problem of the contractor. You should hold their feet to the fire and make them redo everything they did. The layout being that far off is ridiculous for a licensed contractor. Make them give you your money's worth. I appreciate you taking the high road attitude, but that is the reason these guys get away with this kind of work. They should give value for value paid. Anyway, you keep up the good work.

Josh and Erin, welcome to the world of sleazy sub contractors. I found the same problem after I went from a business, owning a small construction company where I did all the work with two helpers, to a major contractor hiring subcontractors. I found out that I had to watch their work every moment until I got big enough to hire project managers to oversee what they were doing. You both have the pedigree of perfectionists! You can see it in everything you touch or have control of. I was taught, at a young age, that anything worth doing is worth doing well and if I followed that rule, I wouldn't have to do it over again. You exceed the rule through your change-outs by making them all look like they were done in the beginning. So perfect the look, so beautiful the result, you're like no others I've ever seen.

My wife, who is literally the "carpenter" of the family (she builds decks, installs windows, lays tile, demos and builds walls, etc.), measures using the, "16 and a half, plus three lines," method of measurement. When I saw the hesitation to give an exact measurement, and the laugh, I knew what was coming. It's a constant source of amusement when we work together. I just called her to tell her that I just saw someone using her measuring system on youtube.

May your children glean as much as you continue to teach those of us watching. Its an honor to cheer you on knowing that your attitude has picked us all up. I worked for a large construction company, and I feel for you guys. Their concrete work is totally unacceptable. the lack of re-bar, out of square door frame, and having a blowout on the concrete framing is terrible. We never had a blowout on any of the framing over the thousands of yards of concrete we poured. The only option you have is to move on even if you have to do it yourself. I would recommend searching for another contractor and go look at some of their past work.

Kind of a catch 22. I've worked landscaping for a company that is very professional and attentive to detail. Helicopter customers were always a pain because they just made it take significantly longer to finish the job therefore increasing their cost. On the other hand, it's understandable because some companies need to be helicoptered like in this video
