Michael Myers returns to the big screen and I return to Halloween --- finally finishing off my long running Halloween retrospective.
With it being that time of year and Halloween Kills being released I figured now was the proper time to celebrate my favorite slasher.

I like the idea that there's an unspoken psychology to Michael's killing. Could it be that he was abused by his sister, and that when he sees Laurie walking up to his house he believes her to be Judith and stops at nothing to kill her?

Which gets taken away from her in KILLS. She spends the movie crying, getting tricked by multiple people to the reality of the situation around her, falls into the violent mob mentality before getting ignored & assaulted when trying to tell people to stop, goes back to bed to nurse her wound, & is left powerless while her daughter gets murdered & granddaughter nearly killed. KILLS was 2 steps back from the previous movie & it can't even be justified creatively considering the next film takes place 4 years later.

Who cares what he thinks. He wrote it in and did nothing but lead the series to what it was. He has no room to talk now. The franchise already had it imbedded so they should have just started from scratch instead of retconning everything after the original which many people go back to and see them as siblings due to the half a dozen sequels that follow stating such. And it also ruins the Halloween TV cut which hints at this too. Way to go Blumhouse.

@@juniorsigala5028 There's nothing scary about Michael being basically just another typical slasher. It's scary that he's a killer and can't die, simple as that. He has a mask that hides his face, he's supernatural, he doesn't speak, that's good enough. Who cares if he goes after his family or not. He kills random people for the most part anyway outside of the main target. You people are so picky and not satisfying to concepts that shouldn't even bother you and doesn't effect your precious "boogeyman" stigma. John carpenter sucks for hating on it, despite creating it because he could have just written the movie fine without it and we just have Michael going after Laurie some more, and Blumhouse sucks for disregarding most of the continuity just to re-establish a plot point from the original that the sequels have majorly imbedded, they should have just started from scratch entirely and made them unrelated, not disrupt the continuity flow of the original series that already had it's disjointing with H2O. Michael and Laurie were brother and sister and it stuck and was something interesting. It's like people having issues with Luke and Leia being related. SO WHAT? No need to retcon it because you don't like it. Just start a new series with them unrelated, but don't go retconning sequels just to make due and rewrite history in such a sloppy and cheap way. It irks me people like you are accepting of this nonsense.

@@DanganHana no, the doctor did it because wanted to study Michael. He was a “doctor” who wasn’t there to help, he wanted to analyze “evil” that’s the main reason why he became a psychiatrist. Stupid and bad. The twist in the first movie was, dr. Loomis failed to help Michael, he feels responsible that Michael became who he is. He locked him up, rather than helping him get better. It was an epic take that “what does a psychiatrist feels when his patient ends up murdering people?” I love how Dr.Loomis makes himself into a villain, always reminding us that he was the one who created the shape. He was the one who kept him locked up, made him into the emotional monster that we see. Loomis feels so responsible that he wants to KILL Myers. Again, dumb twist (2018) ruined The Whole film for me. @@LouiepTv Yeah KILLS is.....not good for anything other than a few particularly gruesome murders. There's literally no point to it other than pulling a bait-and-switch with fan service actors/characters who then get killed off in some very low IQ ways (and they don't even get the great kills, those go to random new characters like Big John, Marcus, and Cameron). It is funny that when it initially screened at various places in September and started getting bad word-of-mouth, some of the defense online was that it's not meant to be a film that actually focuses on furthering the narrative because it was supposedly going to immediately precede HALLOWEEN ENDS, the way HALLOWEEN rolled right into KILLS, making Parts 1, 2, and 3 for one final lengthy overall story. But now we know ENDS takes place 4 years after HALLOWEEN and KILLS, so KILLS just straight up dropped all storytelling for a body count for no reason outside of why not.

Did she no longer wonder about Michael coming for her? Karen didn't even believe her mom about Michael until a few hours earlier, & now Laurie is telling her to go meet up with Tommy, who just demonstrated how dumb he is by inciting a mob to kill an innocent person, so they can go find Michael. That's an insane thing for Laurie's character to suggest, she basically got her own daughter killed. All because the whole movie was filler as a bridge sequel to HALLOWEEN ENDS & there was nothing to do with Laurie's character, they just had her laying around while people she was close with got murdered to make it more personal for her revenge in the final film. @devontehuntley6274
@devontehuntley6274 2 жыл бұрын
@@flightofthebumblebee9529 No kidding. That's because he already introduced it in his remake when he's telling Michael's backstory, and was an established plot device throughout the original series that he carried over so he was able to do more with it instantly than when the original Halloween came out. Halloween II (1981) introduces it as a twist right at the climax, so there was little that could be done with it the rest of the movie and having it be revealed any earlier would have been too soon and not as effective so it works the way it was presented. A proper expansion of the brother/sister angle would have had to be in Halloween III had they chosen to continue the storyline, but they didn't and by Halloween 4 Jamie Lee Curtis didn't want to come back so nothing could be done there as they had new characters to develop. H2O could have expanded on it, being the "Halloween III" of it's timeline and with JLC returning, but they didn't either and we just get remarks of Michael and Laurie being siblings. But we didn't know how or when Laurie was told this post-H2 and how it affected her, which H2O lacked exploring.

Sartain is one of my favorite things about the movie. Hear me out. John Carpenter made the original Hallloween having been inspired by classic expressionist horror films like The Cabinet of Dr Caligari and Nosferatu, stating that he wanted to take the monster out of Transylvania, and putting him into suburbia. So Dracula is in its DNA. You can see this most obviously with Dr Loomis, who is absolutely an Ahab, or perhaps more specifically, Van Helsing. A man of science and medicine turned hunter. But if Loomis is Van Helsing, and he IS, then Sartain is Renfield. Redfield was a man seduced by Draculas evil, hoping that if he did his bidding, he would be given true power, and made eternal, turned into a vampire. But that's not how Renfields story works out. He is used, and discarded, left a rambling lunatic, locked in an Asylum insisting that some day Dracula would set him free. On some level, Sartain desired that same power, but instead of getting locked up, gets obliterated. Pennywise and Henry Bowers is another take on this same relationship.

With regards to everyone being dismissive of Laurie's PTSD, you have to understand that it's actually a common thing. People know, on the surface, that PTSD is a bitch. That said, unless they've experienced it themselves, they could never truly understand it. Especially if they weren't around to witness or experience the events. Especially if those events were 40 years ago. They just want it to go away and not think about it. Just look at how war veterans were treated when coming home from Vietnam. Sadly, it's something that still happens in 2021. So that part of the movie read as pretty true for me. That said, I didn't really like retconning Michael and Laurie being siblings. I felt as if that added a sense of further trauma to Laurie, as it is her own brother trying to kill her. Giving Michael that motivation doesn't diminish his mystique nor make him any less scary. In fact, it makes him even more of a monster. Especially so, when we still don't know why he wants to kill his family members. Taking that away just makes it ridiculous that he'd still be stalking the same woman and her family. Like now it's like, why does he care so much about this one woman? It's ridiculous to think that he wouldn't just move on to a new victim or a new town to stalk, when he has no personal connection keeping him in Haddonfield.

You know, the idea that Laurie isn't Michael's sister didn't really bother me in the context in which it was presented. It's been a while since I watched Halloween 2, but I don't remember Laurie ever actually being told she was his sister for one thing, and if she was told, I can see the events of that night being so traumatizing already that she just completely refuses to accept that she's related to the guy who murdered all her friends and almost killed her. Like after everything she went through that night, that's the line. She won't even entertain the idea. If you look at it that way, you can still have the events of Halloween 2 as canon, and still accept that Halloween 2018 recontextualizes it as "just some dumb rumor that got spread around" as far as Laurie and her family are concerned. Of course, there is still the fact that Michael and Loomis got blown up at the end of H-2, which doesn't really line up with 2018 either, but they've come back from worse.

Hate to be that “Actually” guy, and yes there is a but that follows, the retcon of Michael and Laurie’s relationship is more comparable to Luke and Vader rather then Luke and Leia. Mostly seeing how Carpenter included that dynamic in the second film after he watched the Empire Strikes Back and thought that plot twist would be cool to include. Soooo, yeah this retcon is a HUGE thing as its one of the iconic moments from the franchise

Going to have to disagree with this being the best sequel. Is it a well-crafted movie with some excellent scenes and sequences, absolutely. But it's also weighed down by some of the new terrible trends in modern horror. For instance everything to do with Allyson's friends and high school I couldn't stand. That Laurie Strode who is obsessed with Michael Myers doesn't follow the transfer bus. And of course the abrupt heel turn of the psychiatrist. I feel like the movie lacks a certain natural progressive flow to it, if that makes any sense. At least to me it feels like characters aren't making natural decisions based on their situations. They're making decisions because the script is telling them to make the decisions. It seems like those scenes and sequences were written before the actual script. Therefore we have a movie that's just jumping from set-piece to set-piece. Just to clarify though I did enjoy the movie I just thought the above held it back.

@@marcusholder6508 for me personally I'd say it's a toss-up between 2 and 4. 2 benefits from having many of the same people attached is the original, so it keeps many of the same themes from the original going. 4 if for no other reason that it did a really great job of revitalizing the franchise after Halloween 3 ( I personally love Halloween 3 but not for the same reasons I like the original Halloween) but 4 did a great job of reintroducing a new generation to Michael Myers and actually taking the story in a kind of cool direction I really wish they would have followed up the ending of Halloween 4 instead of just scrapping in Halloween 5

Well some movies can certainly be considered "Timeless" many are great time capsules. As for Halloween 4 I'm not going to lie it's probably my own Nostalgia playing in to why I liked the film so much. I remember when I saw in theaters and it was just a good time was had by all kind of thing. The movie definitely has its flaws (some major ones at that) but that ending I remember people audibly gasping at it.

Ngl I was interested in the Halloween franchise because it felt like one of the few slasher villains that has motivation. He wanted to end his bloodline while taking out others along the way with a psychiatrist trying to stop him. Now he’s no different than Jason. It’s basically “here’s a group of people now kill them all while slowly walking”. Let’s be real these aren’t horror movies, these are killfest movies with jump scares. Then again all slasher villains suffer the same fate eventually. Jason’s movies had a twist in the first one and a continuation in the second one but then it turned into telekinesis battles, zombies and space shenanigans. To be fair Jason was never compelling (or scary) to begin with, he’s just a man child that’s pissed off about something from decades ago so of course they tried making the story interesting instead of making Jason interesting. Even Freddy who was already a dream demon but then you get kids with powers (didn’t mind it much because lucid dreaming can do this) but also introducing a daughter out of nowhere, future kids/unborn demon babies and somehow being absorbed and reborn from a ghost. His witty remarks and comedy is why I continued watching though and they did expand his backstory as the series went on but it felt like they tried making him a sympathetic character (especially the remake) because he had a horrible life. We all know that pinhead became an afterthought in his movies (that weren’t even originally hell raiser movies). But they changed his character throughout the years. There were clearly rules, codes and distinctions regarding the summoning and summoners, Cenobites aren’t evil or atleast they weren’t and they definitely weren’t demons but now they are demonic ruthless killing machines that has no rules. It’s just inevitable.

I think the only reason the twist with the doctor happened was because they needed a way to get Michael to the Laurie's house for the third act. 17:53 The heel turn of new Dr. Loomis. B class as it is, it is the only way that they, the writers, could get Michael Myers to Laurie’s house. They deleted the idea of Michael and Laurie being family, thereby deleting the idea of him specifically stalking her. In the 2018 movie, Michael is a force of nature, and nothing more. So narratively, there are only three options for having Michael show up to a specific house. Either it was complete happenstance, the doctor took him to her house, or the bus crashed in front of her driveway. The doctor going bad is not great, but it was the least cheesy option.

The original Halloween ll stated Lori was Michaels sister. The first Halloween was a, by pure chance, kinda thing. That's what I loved about the first Halloween, was that it was a random event, a crossing of two completely different paths. Imagine if Michael had driven down another road? Or, if Annie didn't scream speed kills, at Micheal. What if Micheal was caught before even getting back to Haddonfeild?

I thought the trap at the end was awesome with how he slowly picks up and puts on his mask and the beat down, but when Laurie has that speech at the end, and the reveal happens, I didn't care for how they didn't show the kills, but I don't get why Karen was in the house and looking out the same window they set up in flashbacks. That kill was random due to the editing, and felt too fast . They gave big John AnD little John more run time than a major character's death.
