This isn’t just something that this community has to realize. This egotistical mindset is everywhere. People who don’t know or deny that they make mistakes will continue to make them forever. I totally agree, everyone's guilty of this, including myself. I think the underlying factor, though, is how we don't promote growth mindsets; because this happens, every new player will be exposed to this mindset unless they happen to know a "diamond in the rough" or watch them, i.e. you, Tofu, Otzdarva, etc. I think this can be expanded upon with perhaps a PSA or discussion video in how to analyze mistakes and how to cultivate a growth mindset in terms of DBD and, potentially, have it be applicable to real life as well. Great work, as per usual, always giving my incoherent thoughts a voice and structure. Keep it up Scott!

If we had videos where not only can we analyze the mistakes of others but also learn how to analyze and how to correct these errors. For example, I know I make mistakes while playing but I never know what's a mistake and what isn't. Watching content creators commentate their games and analyze them helps, but overall if you don't learn how to analyze your own playing then all that watching isn't going to do much in the long run.

Me and my friends had a game like this against trapper today. We are a 4-man SWF, but none of us are amazing at the game, 3 are decent at best and one is a pretty new player with only like 100 hours. The killer made a bunch of mistakes like interrupting 2 of us at a gen at 5 gens, only to overcommit to chasing 1 guy running away instead of going back to pressure me off the gen in an area surrounded by his set traps, allowing me to finish the gen and disarm all traps around the generator. He stopped comitting to a chase against an injured survivor he was definitely going to kill to try and interrupt a gen, despite the fact that hooking that guy would've made more pressure at that point in the game etc. As soon as we got out he instantly called us big bad "toxic genrushers". None of us played toxic that match, none of us play meta or play to win (I was using autodidact for god's sake), and we definitely weren't playing optimally to the point of genrushing, hence why he managed to interrupt 2 of us stacked on 1 gen at the start of the match. If we were 'genrushing' we wouldn't even let him interrupt 2 people at once, we'd all be spread out on 4 gens all at once. I spent at least 30 seconds after every generator using detectives hunch to go break a totem as well, so he can't even say we just slammed gens all game either. Now, granted we were on Ormond and he only had 1 perk so I doubt he would've won anyway, thats just ormond being ormond, but the fact that he didn't acknowledge a single mistake he made, nor any flaws of map design, instead choosing to single us out as toxic genrushers is kind of disappointing and annoying. Like what do you want us to do? Sit around for a minute not touching gens? You lost because you didn't apply pressure properly in the early game and you got a bad map, don't blame that on us being "toxic genrushers" for doing the one objective we have.

I also think so many people blame the game is because they feel a lot of frustration during the game. If I get hit by a 59 second DS after I hooked 2 people it's logical to blame the game for it, and if multiple things like that happen it's easier to blame the game for everything after a while

Fully agree, also, adding to this, the point that Scott makes needs to be taken comparatively between the 2 adressed mindsets, you can still, for example, have the mindset "i just wanna have fun chases in my games" or "4 stacks of bbq is a win for me". It's just that the self-improvement mindset is healthier than the non-reflective one.

This is all very well said Scott and I couldn't agree more. I think another big thing that relates to this is that people have trouble letting stuff go. I admit that when I'm in game, I'll sometimes make up excuses for myself like "lag" or there was nothing I could do to avoid that hit/get the hit but it's always in the moment when emotions are at their highest. Five minutes later when the match is done I always think, "Yeah, I messed up and could have played that a million different ways with better results." and I stop caring about what could have been and let it go or I try to learn from it, I don't take the loss with me for another ten games. Some people however will hold on to that frustration for way too long and it can change how they react to the game and their mistakes. Having a proper way to vent out that frustration is important but when you see people on the forums saying they're having a mental breakdown because of SWF or other things when instead the real cause may have been their fault in the first place, it becomes it's own issue. Is it about people not being able to admit their mistakes or is that people can't let their mistakes go and so they try an come up with excuses to appease themselves?

You know, pre crossplay playing killer on PC having those games would suck because it was minimum 5-10 min wait for another game if not longer, at least where I live. Now with crossplay I'm finding killer matches in 5-10 seconds most of the time so even if I get absolutely shit on or have a bad game or am playing a killer I'm new with I just dont care as much because the faster queue times have, for lack of a better term, made each individual game less 'valuable' if that makes sense. As in i care less about any individual game because I'm able to play more games in the same time period compared to pre cross play

One of the cool things of watching Scoot is that he's always critical about player's mistakes, so when someone (either him or a survivor) makes a mistake, we know what that mistake was, instead of going "oh that was luck/the game". Now when I lose two gens during my first chance, I know exactly where I fucked up. Or when I miss a hatchet because I moved my mouse too much. The list goes on. I just wish I could run the game at more than 7 FPS so I can tell whether I was actually spun or just couldn't see shit.

I try to spread this message, too, Scott. As an amateur teacher (and small streamer), I try to re-frame how students/people think about mistakes and encourage a more constructive, positive, improvement-centered mindset. I'm basically restating what you said in this video, but yeah - if people start looking at mistakes as opportunities to learn and improve instead of as negative results and/or things to be feared and avoided at all costs (even to the point of denial, blame-shifting, and other forms of disassociation), their improvement in a given endeavor becomes easier. The more comfortable people become with making mistakes and being flawed, the more rapidly (or at the very least, more mentally and emotionally healthily) they improve. It's a very Socratic point of view. "All I know is that I know nothing" comes from the same (or at least a very similar) mentality as "I made mistakes." Both are not operating to protect an ego.
@TerryVideoZone3 жыл бұрын
something I've been thinking since I started playing this game back in 2017 is that you gotta go into it with the same kind of mentality you would with going into learning a fighting game, or any skill really; it's an ongoing process where you yourself and the people around you aren't going to always know everything there is to know. There's always going to be someone better than you and there's always room to improve so entering a cycle where you play the game yourself, review your gameplay, spectate people that play your character at a high level of skill, or at the very least a level you want to reach, and also doing more indepth research into things that are giving you trouble is a very effective strategy for improving. Obviously there are a lot of differences between this game and most traditional fighting games out there, but I feel like this same kind of principle applies. The only thing this game *really* needs to address is the map balance, and while some aspects like "second chance" perks being combo'd for insane anti-pressure like DS+unbreakable as you often say, or the oppressive power spikes certain items, addons and mori's allow for definitely need some scrutinizing, DBD definitely feels like it's in a much better place than it was all those years ago. At least in a world where the game isn't a new buggy mess to discover every patch :)))

Which is why you so very often get to see the "nice tunnel" when you've literally hooked every other person before going back to that person, but no, you were tunneling according to xXFortniteSuXPubGRoX28Xx who spent the entire game trying to get one flashlight save. Or how they scream about this or that perk, or this and that addon. On both sides mind you. It's really just vitriol in the well and everybody's getting a mouthful.

I haven't played a lot of DBD lately, but in the past I've seen recordings of my own matches thanks to shadowplay being on... And I've absolutely had reactions like "Why the hell did I do that?" at points in basically every single one of them even if they were good matches for me. Some of the mistakes were so glaringly obvious watching the footage back it is almost as if I was watching someone else play. That for me it really showed how different the reality of things were at the time of playing, versus how I might have thought a match went right after it ended.

It's not only admitting their own mistakes that is hard for people to do. Admitting that someone played well is also something that people seem to avoid, which is a pity, because both things imo are extremely important if you want to grow as a player. Knowing both your own shortcomings and your opponent's strengths.

Pretty much since the day I got to "high level" area of DBD play I have recorded as many games that I play as I can. I go back to look at the different games in order to see the mistakes that I make during said games, be it the ones that I already knew I made or otherwise. I still get a bit ticked off when multiple things happen back to back, be it mistakes I make myself or something the survivors do when I'm playing killer or killer does when I play survivor, but I still tend to go back and see multiple things that I could have or should have done differently.
@Daddix03 жыл бұрын
Yup. Not naming names, but a big reason the community says this type of shit are some content creators that are NOT humble, and don’t encourage admitting and learning from mistakes. It’s even worse when they still draw or win a game, and they consider it a loss and complain about the game even after a 3k or 4K. Makes the mindset even worse.

I feel like people have this mindset because the games you make mistakes in just feel like you couldn't do anything. As killer, a few small mistakes can add up really quickly to a steamroll from the survivor team; you can't really make little mistakes throughout a match and get a win vs a decent team. So I feel often people just don't realize their mistakes because they're so small and seemingly insignificant that you'd never notice them in-game, but really they completely shafted you in the big picture. I don't think it's an issue with ego, I think it's just an issue with inexperience/ignorance. I totally understand why people think these losing games are unfair, because it feels like you didn't play terribly. Honestly a replay view system would go a long way for this game, would maybe fix a lot of the complaints in the community.

Kudos for bringing this up. Sometimes I feel like chat put streamers (this happens on other games as well) on pedestal. Like they think the streamers are the kind of "friends" that they don't ever wish to irritate, or that they actually believe streamers they like are infallible. It's worse to see some streamers actually let the "celebrity treatment" go into their head and think they're as great as chat want them to feel. Let's face it. It's a game, people play games to relax. Accept things that are not going to change (i.e. BHVR's retarded design), and seek constant personal growth is never as appealing as sit on your ass and complain about how the odds are stack against you.

There's many times losses and bad games do not feel like my fault at all, but almost every time I can see at least one critical error that though pulling it off may not have saved the game, it's something to look back on and prepare for next time, and maybe I can prevent that failure in the future.

This reminds me of a match where I played with two friends against a Plague on Temple of Purgation. Both of them essentially split the time for chases for the whole match and couldn't do much once they were on hook because the Plague would either face camp or constantly walk around them in Kindred distance. That doesn't matter, what matters to me as how the Plague proceeded to message me and explain they were both toxic. Neither of them t-bagged or did any gesture that would be considered toxic behavior, they were just really good in chase, and I feel like Scott's point on players failing to admit their faults does a good job of highlighting the mindset people like this player tend to have.

I had a game yesterday on astarov as blight where a 4man finished a gen so fast it didn’t count it. They spread out the gens and did well but I still got them all. Extremely frustrating, with them along with the killer interactsble bug that is rampant in my games. The map is almost comically killer sides even though it doesn’t seem that way at first glance. I also agree about the circle jerk of the nothing I could do mentality. Sometimes I don’t feel I played that bad as to get beaten as bad as I have other times I do. Getting in the mindset that you just lose because... isn’t a good or healthy one. Losing as killer is extremely frustrating, because it’s essentially a race against time and if you are losing you have to do all you can to try and stop it while as survivor you can just sit in a gen if that’s the right call which isn’t stressful. A lot of players need to realize this and go in expecting not not 4k everytime and be ok with losing.

I definitely agree that the mindset should mostly be intrinsic however, it would be ignorant to ignore problems with the game in favor of intrinsic possibilities because then we don't hold the people who's job it is to balance the game accountable. Scott, don't worry, we know you are capable of making mistakes, and so does the rest of the DBD community, especially the majority of players. Though, the survivors were all a 1man SWF, they had a key, also, 3 medkits and 4 bnps. I also got ds stunned by all 5 of them while the rest of them clicky clicked their flashlights at me as they simultaneously gen-rushed me. Also, it was Haddonfield but with snow and long hallways on top of the 30 safe pallet loops and jigsaw boxes. Also, the survivors had no ed and tunnelled me off the hook. Also, the spirit brought Prayer beads and an ebony mori. And my shoes weren't tied. That's why I lost that one match today.

I think one of the best things that you could've done to get this point across is if you pulled up the stats BHVR released months ago which showed at low levels of play, killers are averaging something like 2.5 kills with even the weakest killers, and at about a 3K with some of the stronger killers at low levels of play. Then it jumps to higher ranks and all of a sudden it was I believe all but like 2 or 3 killers were averaging closer to a 3K then a 2K with some of the stronger killers such as Nurse, Freddy, etc. They were getting ABOVE a 3K average, like I think one of them was at something like about an 80% kill average meaning realistically on average they're probably able to 4k every other game. Certain issues in the came I can understand make the game feel unfair and unfun, but at the end of the day the stats they released show that at all levels of play killers realistically are in a good if not great spot and to make excuses of bad balancing, unfair gameplay, etc, every time that these people get screwed harder then usual, is just stupid. Problem as well isn't that these people don't realize it, it's that they choose to ignore it. I've spoke with a number of people about it on the subreddit and they ALWAYS find some sort of excuse. Like someone tried saying the rank 1 stats are skewed because only the best players will stay rank 1, ignoring the fact that at the end of the day they still stay rank 1 by beating people at or close to rank 1.

I agree for the most part, but i don’t think people just want to shift blame to the game (of course with some exceptions). And yeah admitting you make mistakes and learning from them is crucial to achieve something, however saying “oh I could’ve done this thing and that thing” in almost every game is straight up negating the problems the game has.

Many experience players say that this map is not killer friendly at all and put on the bottom list of killer's favourite map.
