very superstitious people and also fearful of the law at that time. we have to remember the days that they lived in were harsh and not at all like todays time. Irish of course love their weans but were also a down trodden and ruled population we can't begin to understand what they must have been feeling. what a truly terrible crime

Well, when there was no video to prove guilt. I mean now, if there was a tik-tok of the person confessing or committing the crime 6 minutes would be okay, but yeah, back then, 6 minutes was a bit rushed.

@@rosameryrojas-delcerro1059 Even 6 minutes now is ridiculous! If you are going to sentence someone to gaol (jail) or death the least one can do is to review the entirety of the evidence and "deliberate" over any possible shortcomings in the case. Situations like that are how there are so many wrongful convictions. Even people who have video confessions have later been proven innocent.

In times before better investigative techniques, study of possible evidence, and especially the way EVERYONE was permitted to trample crime scenes ... There's no telling how many innocent people were jailed or ex3cuted in history. Then again, there were cases of "This *officially/noble titled person* doesn't like that person so ... Life in a cell. Midwives and healers were almost exclusively women and so were called Witch by *learned men of science* when schooled doctors became a thing but the "simple folk" didn't trust all that ... We were also called that big ol' M word that got us tossed in dungeons and "legally"ended.... Sure - I do know which herbs will end an unhealthy or unwanted pregnancy, a simple tummy ache, or an abusive spouse... That doesn't mean I make use of them all. The language barrier here was a grave injustice

Brilliant narration of an extremely complicated case. It was tragically fascinating to me, due to the fact that I taught English as a Second Language. The language barrier played a critical role in the heinous matter of injustice, along with the lies spouted by those men. A tragedy for The Joyces who were slaughtered, and also a tragedy for Myles Joyce because they were all innocent victims caught up in that atrocious attack. They possessed so little, and then their lives were stolen... Your research is spectacular and your voice sooooo soothing as you retell these grim stories. You think things have changed that much for the poor? That people are presumed innocent. In the age of the internet, people are convicted in the court of public opinion, so I must say I disagree. It's the same old thing, just painted a different color and classed up a bit. At least we have forensics, and the lack of an automatic death penalty. But the rich get away with crime and the poor are defenseless. I am thankful for the change that has taken place though. And thank God for the changes. But its not enough. We have groups that fight for the wrongly convicted, and I am thankful for that as well. If you research all the wrongly convicted, it's still staggering and shocking. I am thankful that we have public aid for the poor. There is a lot to be thankful for, so I must agree with most of your statement. I don't mean to be argumentative, and I respect your comment, we have come a long way. We can be thankful for every bit of progress made thus far, we still have things that need changing.

I had to listen to the full story twice and other bits a few more times. The first time around, I got so confused with all the Casey's involved. Many of us have it so easy nowadays, it is almost impossible to imagine the harsh living conditions of tenant farmers and their families. Working the land morning to night, very high rent and no security for the future, at the mercy of landlords who may evict them on a whim. Two boys sleeping in one room and three adults and a child in a room 6' x 4'. Unbelievable, sad, infuriating. Even more infuriating is that only one of the guilty persons who slaughtered the family paid some kind of price for it. Thank you Brief Case. It was a hard story to hear but history that must be remembered.

As an Irish person, subscribed for many years, I'd like to thank you for telling this case in the full context of the history surrounding it. The Irish story is perhaps no different to any peoples story around the world. A story of ordinary people struggling under the rulership of one country by another, lands taken over and robbed of its produce by the privileged and rich, its people the same, worked and kept in extreme poverty without a voice and treated with comtempt but its our story so thank you. Your dedication to telling the whole story in the context and your sensitivity to the case is why i suscribe but when its 'one of your own' it hits home. Thanks again. I also love your voice. Often i cannot sleep unless i have one of your vidoes playing. If i fall asleep in the middle, I rewatch the next morning,as i am doing now.😅 Bravo

Good morning This was a very, very hard one to listen to . It’s heartbreaking to know that innocent people are sent to prison and executed based on lies and threats just to close a case. That still happens today but fortunately, forensic evidence is now available . I can’t imagine what the family goes through and feels knowing they have a loved one that’s about to be executed behind some thing they did not do and back then it was just about closing the case and moving on there really isn’t any moving on for the families or any justice knowing that the person they loved was taken away from them. Thank you for another intriguing story and this one was just very very sad. Have a wonderful week and I can’t wait until next Monday.. Bless 🙏🏽

Sad bit of history, especially when nobody had any reason for this family should be killed. I have though read a few stories ,where the deeply impoverished family is blamed for stealing a sheep , for the simple reason that a widow woman and her two children had survived a long winter snow storm. When the farmers went to their farm & found them alive after not seeing smoke coming from their chimney for days ,the two farmers on each side of the farm rode out on horseback to pick up the 3 bodies. When to their surprise they were alive wrapped in blankets, the farmers brought them to the sheriff and told him she must have stolen a sheep ,because they had no animals left and were still alive. The mother said she kept making stew for the family with vegetables from her root cellar. The mother was found guilty of sheep rustling and each farmer adopted one kid & divided the property their parents owned in 2. Years later they son took them to court for keeping the kids in the barn & using them as slaves and keeping their parents land . Of course the siblings got nothing even though their mom never stole a sheep. Just that poor folks are often blamed when something goes missing.

My grandfather was born in the 1880s in County Cork, and lived his early life is such extreme poverty that after emigrating to the States he resolved never to go back..”a land of hardship and heartbreak”. There’s a very dark aspect of the Celtic soul that not many of aware of, of jealousy, envy, a petty resentment to see others get ahead. It’s not a cardinal feature anymore, but no doubt still exists.

OMG!!! What a story!!! So much intrigue. There is so much detail to this story (and it's aftermath) that I will listen to this video again, to try to better understand just what happened. So sad for the murdered family. So sad for the travesty of justice that affected innocent lives. It made me think of how the wheels of justice can turn so slowly these days .. Yet, if "justice" is carried out too swiftly tragic mistakes can be made. Undeserved prison sentences are bad enough...losing 20 years of your life!...and the poor soul who died in his cell. But, to be hanged as an innocent man is sickening to anyone with a sense of true justice. These juries that took only minutes to reach their verdicts, probably could have cared less about what was or was not true. And then the fact to know that other perpetrators got away scott free????? I do commend the local clergy for keeping pressure up on one individual to make him confess his lies! My heart goes out to Myles. But, probably more so to his wife who was left struggling without him in that harsh era of Irish life. I commend that Irish gov. for finally pardoning Myles. Yet, it is shocking (but not surprising) that the British authority has never done so. This story is one I will have to mull over...and will never forget. Thank you for sharing these stories with us that otherwise we would never know about.

Imagine being tried for murder and not knowing what is actually being said in court. I can't understand how people (lawyers, cops, judges, and accomplices) can live with themselves knowing that they were involved in sending innocent people to be hanged.

This was a over the top investigation for this story and video posting. This whole story was sad from beginning to the end what got me the worst was the village folk not doing anything to help the two injured but still alive boys and letting one pass, I don't think I could just stand back and do nothing no matter the reprisals I'd have gotten from the villagers. Another Great video posting 👍👍👍👍👍 Thank you for that. 😁😎🍻✌️👋

I agree we live in better times, however there are still judicial injustices in the USA and many private prisons which allow less oversight than publicly owned prisons

The practice of compensating witnesses and offering defendants clemency in return for giving testimony against co-defendents to validate the prosecuation or defence is still prevalent in most Western legal systems to this day. Ditto plea bargains, which put innocent accused people in an horrific dilemma - plead guilty and accept a smaller sentence or plead not guilty and face a much longer sentence and possibly execution. Why this practice has not been banned long ago is difficult to fathom. It has nothing to do with justice.

Just one very small correction: wool carders are used for _spinning_ wool, not weaving. In particular, they would be used for preparing wool for what is called a woollen spin, as opposed to what is called a worsted spin. For the latter, the wool is combed, not carded. That said, this was such a sad case, with miscarriages of justice everywhere. The police don't appear to have attempted to do a thorough job of solving the crime, it's almost as if they were thinking, "What's one Irish peasant here or there?" I wonder if the survivors knew more than they said but were (understandably) too afraid to say more. I also wonder if the people who discovered the crime scene could have saved both survivors if they'd got help faster. Then there is the issue of language. Without competent translators the accused don't have a hope of a fair trial - and, for that matter, the "justice" system doesn't have a hope of finding out who actually committed the crime or why. An interpreter who spoke a different dialect could be dangerously off the mark, depending upon the dialect spoken by the accused and that spoken by the interpreter. In particular there is the issue of 'false friends', words that sound the same but which have evolved quite different meanings. Then there is the issue of the legal assistance the accused received. They should have had a solicitor and a barrister who were at least vaguely competent and who actually gave a fuck and they should have been working with their clients right from the start, not just warming a seat in the courtroom. The juries' care factors appear to have been down there with the defence lawyers'.

Firstly, Ireland was part of the UK in that period and its laws were administered by Irish Courts, Juries and Judges. They were 'British' in the sense that Scottish, English and Welsh are British now. The UK was not a foreign power, indeed in NI it is still not so. Secondly, when Ireland became independent its historic laws and cases were inherited by the new nation. Therefore only the President of Ireland could issue a pardon - the UK has no status in the matter.
@BriefCaseOfficial

Thanks, I incorrectly presumed that as Ireland at the time was part of the UK that the British government could issue a pardon, I appreciate the correction

A heart-breaking tale. Once again we see innocent people punished for crimes they didn't commit. Innocent men admitting guilt for fear of hanging. As for motive, I think the old clan history of that region, prior to British rule, must necessarily be taken into account. Clan warfare was brutal, and much blood was shed in the past, and you still had some families, who clung to those values. Especially in such desperate times. Watching your children go hungry and loved ones be sick, people want someone to blame. Tempers flare. Throw in some alcohol? People can act rashly. I think someone was just angry with that family. A cowardly group that stormed the place in the dead of night and shot unarmed women and children and all the men. God only knows what the women truly endured. Rape was not talked about much. That poor boy to lose his entire family, and the life he knew, entirely gone.
