No lingering doubt about the culpability of Mary Ann Britland in this story. She received the justice and punishment she deserved. I pity her daughter Susannah who went from having a mother, father and sister to being all alone in the world in a span of just five months (March to August 1886). It must have been just a horrible time for her, then and long after. Thank you Brief Case for bringing another hidden case to light.

Cant believe that affairs of the heart, can lead to these senseless murder of many innocent lives.Women tend to be more vicious than men and they dont have any qualms in murdering people who they believe are in their way .Selfish woman who had sold her soul .Reminds me of Lady Macbeth .The Bard knew the way of women then .Shakespeare knew how selfishness and greed can cause women to become demons .Thank you BC for the wonderful narration, the beautiful illustrations and artwork .lt never fails to attract my attention .Thank you for the story and the indepth research and presentation .

Good morning Brief Case! A very interesting story, yet very sad at the same time. We have heard of people killing their significant others, because they want to be with someone else, but to kill your own daughter to keep her mouth shut, well thats insane and just plain evil. I'm glad that justice was served up quickly to this woman and she got what she deserved. Thank you and I hope you have a wonderful week.

It's so bizarre that the doctor was incapable of recognizing anything mysterious in any of the three deaths -- but good grief, at least the second and third! The more I learn about historic crime, the more I realize how less common it is now for people to commit such sprees. When I feel like "my god, crime today is rampant!" I think about cases like this one and am thankful that the evolution of medical forensics and criminal investigation makes it at least less tempting to act on foolish and selfish impulses.

I think the docs’ problem 100+ years ago (this is like 170 years ago) was with no knowledge of germs, no penicillin, high mortality rates for children, people dying all of the time of anything, why would a few deaths in a household necessarily stand out in itself? Also I think people were maybe less suspicious. Idk

If you did social history at school, medicine & knowledge re infection & hygiene back then was incredibly basic. Right up until the late 1800's , 50% of children died before age 5 due to diphtheria, polio, measles & whooping cough. And 1 in 3 women died in childbirth: either due to complications in labour or shortly after afterwards , due to infection from poor hygiene by the attending midwives & Dr's. Handwashing between patients wasn't even a thing until the end of the century.

The jury did a good job considering the evidence carefully, instead of making a snap judgement based on rumor. I wonder what caused the initial split in the jury? Maybe a disbelief that a woman would kill her own child.

What a sad story of a woman gone wild! One murder led to another as she feared being discovered. I'm American and thought the name of the place, Ashton-under-Lyne sounded familiar. It finally struck me that my grandmother came from the east of Manchester and that place was listed in the place names in the big family Bible.

I helped my sister organize centuries of death certificates for her small New England town. The cause of death depended on who the town doctor was. One guy would list everyone as “heart failure,” another would list everyone of “apoplexy,” etc.

What a homicidal maniac. Poisoning might be the easiest way to kill someone, but it's also probably the most painful. To stand over and see someone in that kind of torment, especially a loved one or someone close to them and continue on that path of destruction, is frighteningly twisted.

Good morning, It’s so sad once again gossip can turn someone to commit murder in what seems to me out of desperation over gossip. Unfortunately, the rumors seemed to be true according to Mr. Dixon. To kill her husband, daughter and Mrs. Dixon was by any means was definitely the wrong thing to do over people saying things about you. But we go back to a time when divorce, being single while pregnant and carrying on an affair was not accepted. Did she do the right thing by killing? Absolutely not. She would have been caught and she was punished. Rumors can ruin a person’s life if unfounded. Sadly 3 people died behind it and an affair. Thank you for another mysterious story. I hope you have a wonderful week Bless 🙏🏽🇬🇧🇵🇭

Very well told and illustrated as usual, can we imagine for a moment the amount of "unexplained" deaths there must have been in the past and possibly the result of murder. Here are the perfect examples of "doctors" signing papers without any real investigation, can we imagine how many others there must have been in the past, even in a reasonably "civilised" country such as England.

Mary Ann was indeed a heartless wicked woman. Especially knowing the consequence of punishment that led to such an act. And, yet! Still pursue it proudly including her own child.

@@BriefCaseOfficial These belated birthday dinners were already planned last week. Then again, I tried planning a September dinner this month with an auntie on September 2. Apparently, her month is already booked, so we're doing it at the very first day of Thanksgiving 2023 long weekend in October.
