Maria Van Dusen Hendrickson was beautiful, not yet 20 when she died. It's very sad that she hitched her wagon to an amoral man who caused her unhappiness, untold grief and ultimately killed her. John Hendrickson got his just desserts. Thank you Brief Case for another gripping story of love, betrayal, greed, murder and justice.

I wonder what Maria saw in this guy. Especially after she realized the full extent of his wickedness - assaulting a woman, getting engaded to another while already married, giving her a venereal disease, stealing her belongings, likely trying to poison her multiple times... And yet she was still trying to get along with him. Yes, she could not divorce him, but she could have lived a separate life (like many couples did even at the time) and waited until one of his many vices inevitably led to his death.

Brief Case said it, and it’s true: divorce was heavily frowned-upon in those days. People believed that, even if a woman married unfortunately, it was her duty to bear it until death. No matter how much people might have sympathized with her after all her husband’s escapades, if she divorced him, her reputation would have been in tatters and she’d have been regarded as a fallen woman. As much as he’d humiliated her up to that point, she was still considered a dutiful wife and given credit for bearing it without public complaint.

@@BriefCaseOfficial Oh, BriefCase, I fear you blew it this time! This was a horrible case of injustice! Every single member of the New York State Association of Pathologists signed a letter condemning the verdict. There was no evidence that she was even poisoned, much less with aconite. Swinburne and Smith were young, inexperienced country doctors with little experience, not qualified to do an autopsy, and their interpretations of facts were nonsense. Salsbury was not a chemist, he had been a lab assistant for a couple of years. The amount of aconite he claimed to recover from just a sample of her stomach tissue equaled the amount found in an entire ounce of tincture. It would be extremely difficult to administer even a spoonful of the acrid stuff. More would be impossible. There's plenty more. I'm sorry I don't have links, but the story is available. I don't remember where I found it, but I was researching Dr. Swinburne when I found it. I'd admired his accomplishments for many years. He was a great man. This case actually shook me. I love your channel, listened to every case multiple times. I was shocked this video ended with his hanging. Please look into this case more deeply. I will go so far as to suggest you consider taking it down until you do. This trial was an outrage, and you have missed the crux of the whole affair. Just Google "The Hanging of John Hendrickson", and you will find things of interest. It's too bad they were in such a hurry to hang him

I appreciate your comment and for watching all the videos. While I can't cover every detail in these brief cases, I believe I have addressed the main issues, including the defense's concern about the prosecution's medical expert witnesses lacking experience. You wrote that Dr Salsbury was not a chemist and had infact only been a lab assistant for a couple of years. You maybe correct but in the trial documentation that was produced at the time, he was described as "Physician & Practical Chemist and one of the most distinguished in his department of Science in the State” Mr. Hendrickson was indeed found guilty, and this verdict was upheld by the Supreme Court. I believe I have covered the essential aspects of the case, including the background, the tragic deaths of Maria, her baby, and her father, the investigation, arrest, and the trial. I possibly could have delved deeper into the appeal, but I aim to keep the videos concise. Regarding Mr. Hendrickson's guilt, as you know, I refrain from giving personal opinions. I do acknowledge your perspective on the verdict, and your engagement is appreciated.

What an awful relationship. Especially in those days. Knowing that he was involved in questionable behavior, should have made her change her mind about him. Although her demise was horrible, I feel that she was very spoiled and used to getting her way and that is why she was able to marry him. You didn't go against your parents in those days. Not like now. Had she listened to her parents she mostly likely would never have experienced any of what she did. Sad. Very sad. Thank you again B.C. another wonderful and exciting case. Thank you for your dedication to all of the research you do. It must be near endless. I love you! Until the next...brief....case!

Thanks Lisa, the biggest issue I have is when I am reading through old newspapers about a particular case, I get side tracked and read lots of the other stories as well, I find the problems facing the people of the 19th Century were not so different to the ones we have today

@@BriefCaseOfficial That’s so interesting! I’d be the same way. The only difference, I would imagine, is their wording. They worded things so formally in those days. The vocabulary was way more formal and well spoken than today.

Good morning Brief Case. Why would this girl choose such a loser, to marry? He was just a bad person with bad intentions from the get go. Poor Maria, lost her daughter and eventually her life, giving this guy the benefit of the doubt. Fortunately, justice was served in her case. Thanks BC for the story, and have yourself a wonderful week.

Good morning! Such a tragedy Maria loses her baby, father and her life at such a young age. I wish she would have listened to her parents. He claimed his innocence before he was hanged. I’m not saying he’s innocent, but it makes me wonder if he was executed for his character. Last week there was really great conversation about the story you did. Thank you for another good story. If that was Maria in the picture, she was a beautiful young woman. Have a great week Bless 🇬🇧🇵🇭

Inasmuch as arsenic was a common remedy for “nasty diseases,” I’m surprised that the husband’s defense didn’t suggest that scenario. But then again, that would have exposed him as a creep who gave his wife an STD. Good story.
