It is VERY interesting...no mention of her OWN children dying? Yet 7 children in her care did? She knew well that she was breaking the law and overwhelmed HERSELF by taking so many, regardless of their financial status. How shameful of her to allow them to die! I believe it was intentional, and likely not only because she was overwhelmed, but because she may not have received payment. So she decided to just ignore those whose family didn't pay. Likely drugged them because she didnt want to hear them wailing! 😢😒🤦🏻‍♀️ She got off easily.. taking 7 little innocent lives and got to live her own! I hope you have a wonderful week Brief Case 💼! At that time there were really no social service and CPS as such. The parishes used to have a practice of auctionong out orphans to those who required least pay to take them in, they often were doing quite a deal of labour. Those unwed mothers who were from families that were better off in economic terms were typically able to go to other placera to give birth and the child were often "taken/placed" with relatives and registred as the relatives' own child which wasfairly easy to so when people often delivered their babies att home. It was not uncommon up to just a few decades ago that people discovered that who they believed to be their patents weren't, usually with some medical issue initiating the discovery.

We can't imagine how poor, helpless and desperate people were in those times. I do genealogy research on my family and have found out a little about the late 1800:s. Hygiene was almost unheard of, and bacteria were not yet discovered. People had no idea how diseases spread. All members in a family could use the same cloth to wipe their noses, for example. Alva was probably starving now and then. With starvation comes weakness, damaged internal organs and a greater risk of becoming ill. She almost certainly had very bad teeth (or no teeth left!) as a result. Her brain would have taken damage, and her judgment. I'm not justifying her actions, just trying to imagine the terrible situation. It was a way for her to survive. She would not have gotten a lot of money from the parents, and probably just once. Therefore she would take care of many children, to try and get more payments. I can't imagine having so many children to take care of by yourself - not getting any sleep, getting colds and worse... Many stories tell of these women giving the children cloths dipped in alcohol to suck on. It was a very unfair society. I England, Charles Dickens wrote his books about Oliver Twist, Nicholas Nickleby etc. to protest against the unfair treatment of the poor. During one period it was, for example, illegal to be unemployed in Sweden!

It is so frustrating that the authorities kept introducing laws to safeguard children but did nothing to sort the underlying economic issues and social stigma that was driving the problem for women pregnant out of wedlock in the first place! If women can’t feed their children, or can’t keep them because of social shame and the associated difficulties, then you are going to get unscrupulous murdering profiteers appear to take advantage of this situation. Children should never be made to pay for the mistakes of their parents. A compassionate society ensures every child is properly cared for from day one, regardless of who raises them.

If that was in Russia, the children would have been eaten, maybe with some turnips, pumpkins, radish & onions, they don't even need the excuse of a "war", although having a war gives them an excuse to cannibalize their kids, it happened in WW2, and in some cases they even "shrunk" their children, with sometimes even "head-shrinking" ceremonies taking place, this is what happens in Communist Russia.

She became in the situation of the women who brought them their babies, as she herself had been before. Men got away scott free, but the tremendous pressure of being an unwed mother was obviously life crushing. We can hardly picture abandoning a baby, but the stigma is gone and help is now available, even the father is often held accountable. One day you’ll have to bring us a murder that involves a nice baby farmer. You kind of owe it to them by now. 😂

@@maramarxx2431I think you are right, but prisons generally seem unthinkable. No running water, no heat, no fans even, the only books allowed often being the Bible, no programs, some disallowed talking, no regulations regarding food or bedding…the women probably had little protection from abuse, like now, but might have had slightly better sleeping areas because of being women and being separated from men in men’s prisons. Of course having to deal with so many men might make such small populations of women neglected. Idk as a woman I wouldn’t break the law now and doubly wouldn’t have 120 years ago. Lol

I pity the children of these poor families, treated as if they're bulky refuse, instead of a nature's gift worthy of care and devotion. What a shitty socio-economic model they lived on. Contemporary children don't even realize they've the privilege to thrive in far more lenient times, where they have advanced rights. Their parents should teach them early to be grateful for what they have, for how their base necessities are met... In theory, it's done already, but is it to a satisfactory extent? I am not completely sure.

Being a woman in this time period. Unless you came from money/wealth was almost a lose lose situation. If I didn't know better I would've thought every time one of these women had sex they literally got pregnant! It's apparent some things never change.( casual sex lol) This in itself an unwed pregnancy was of course the fault of the woman. She was looked down upon! Yet, the father bared no responsibility what so ever, unless by choice. ( BS) She's forced to raise this child and/or multiple children alone. Without any support system to help this is near impossible! In a lot of these stories having to raise children alone. Has led many of these women to do unspeakable/desperate things to survive. How different their lives might have been if the laws required the men too support the children they fathered. One thing that could've put a stop to such desperation & loss of reputation. Imo a gamechanger. Birth control!!

Something happened to me at the age of nine and I didn’t disclose it until I was 33 years old and it was the biggest mistake I ever made by telling a family member who turned around and told everyone. stories like these you listen to them and you don’t want to cry but eventually it brings back memories. Baby hospitals appear to have happened in more countries than England and the US, with the same result. More dead babies, at a time when infant mortality was high, so there was little follow up on the care of the infants and children.

Thank you, BC. Love the history of the place and times of your cases. This one had an engrossing expose of the economic hardships and the dilemma of society rules/restrictions of unwanted children born out of wedlock and the great economic hardships of the times. In this case, one can see that there was plenty of blame to go around and perhaps the tragedy of those poor unwanted and unloved young souls that were exploited and lost their lives had a positive --- that changes took place to help remedy it. Looking forward to next Monday's case.😊

The last woman sentenced to the death penalty in Portugal did exactly the same crime: she adopted babies, was given some money to raise them, then killed them and fetched for another... in 1772.

Very sad of course, the lot of Children born with out Parents to take responsibility for said Children, and this picture remains the same today, so one could say, Justice was served, as Alva but flotsam in this on going Human tragedy, of fabulous Children, that stunning miracle of conception, being then dismissed to the care of others. Big and expensive business to this day, with Social Welfare Taxes picking up the tab.

2 and a 1/2 years of hard labor in prison for a child's life?! And then nothing else was done about the other 6 children who died in her care… And then she had 2 more children with her last husband? "Flabbergasted" just doesn't quite explain my confusion right now.

Wow - has nobody ever experienced poverty and desperation? I mourn the children, too, but it's possible to also recognize the tragedy of those caught in the devastating economic time - like the days we're approaching now in our vastly imbalanced US economy where childbirth is demanded for many poor women and girls. Do you think Alva was the only woman trapped in that state? Judging the victim of oppression for desperate moves can be an unkind political way to deflect from correction and avoid systemic change. Sanctimony is just a bonus.
@Zaft_K

Women were held 100% responsible for any babies, even though it has always taken two to make one. Where was any outrage at the fathers who walked away scot free? Not to mention that infant mortality was very high, and even higher in the unsanitary conditions that the poor had to suffer. Did Anna have to take in 17 children? No, but what would have happened to them otherwise? What other options were available? Society was outraged, but did society *do* anything to prevent these tragedies?
