In this, episode, we are going to take a look at the real wartime service of UB-65 and then investigate the legend to establish if there is any truth in the story of the supposedly haunted U-boat or whether it was as some believe the result of an elaborate plan by the Allies to combat the underwater menace. An inspiration for the movie "Below". One of the only and best haunted submarine movies out there, IMHO.

I hope they redo the Korean War documentary because I’ve tried to watch it three times and I just couldn’t get past the first few minutes.

My Grandad was part of Merchant Navy Crew who shot off The Turret of a German Submarine off the Southern coast of Ireland. I can't find nothing about it. The submarine didn't know the merchant ship was equipped with a Cannon my grandad's crew had apparently been training in Liverpool with it for a long time and where a DAB shot.

It may be a sailor's superstition, but a ship that takes workers with it, before its launch, is Cursed and you must not go on board... Little exemple : Officially, eight workers died during the three years of construction of the Titanic: four fell from scaffolding, a fifth had a leg crushed during the launch, and three others died in unknown circumstances. In 1890, during the destruction of the Great Eastern, the very first giant liner, the skeletons of a riveter and an apprentice were discovered in the double bottom. They had disappeared during construction, thirty-six years earlier. Knowing that this ship never really worked in terms of profitability and suffered a lot of damage during its career.

The story of the riveter and his apprentice, while being a great story, is pure fiction. There are no records of any workers disappearing, nor of any skeletons being found when the ship was broken up for scrap. It's worth remembering the Great Eastern gave years of brilliant service laying the first transatlantic communication cable. It's a shame: it's a great story!

The Twilight Zone had a great episode with Verner Kempler, "great actor from hogans hero's and many other things" about a uboat. The story was awesome, every time Kempler was awake a strange banging sound could be heard, but when he slept it didn't.

Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea even had an episode with the commander of a U Boat somehow being on board. I saw the episode in 2023 and thought to myself. "did I really watch this $#it when I was a little kid?"

Elevated levels of carbon dioxide can induce panic attacks and the feeling of impending doom, especially in such tense and claustrophobic settings. Anyway, the ghost is gone now. All is safe.

Just being in a submarine would undoubtedly have caused that also. That would have gotten tiresome after time. Well at any given moment we could all die instantly and no one would ever know how or where & why. And that is the situation with many submarines from WW2 and other time periods. I just wouldn’t want to die in a terrible unlucky accident caused by someone or perfectly bad timing and everyone dies. Kinda shitty to go like that

Carbon monoxide can cause very similar feelings. In fact, anyone who experiences a paranormal event should have the carbon mono and dioxide levels. Just to be safe.

I read many books on this subject what gives this away as fiction is the lack of names mostly the ghost of the second officer and in most cases he does not have a name. Also, if their truth in this surely there would be a incident report on the death of the second officer and the other ratings. It seems most of these ghosts are based on a real object like a submarine, house etc. but that were the story stops and fiction starts.

I imagine, the long history of sailors claiming their submarines were haunted had to do with Carbon Monoxide levels. Increased carbon monoxide levels accounts for quite a few of mistaken paranormal activity.

Read a short story of this (or similar) years ago, that when the U boat sank there was a figure of an officer who had died on it earlier had his hand raised as if welcoming the rest of the crew. Cannot for the life of me remember wich book of war short stories it was.

H.P. Lovecraft wrote a short story based on this incident. He changed the names and setting a bit but it end with the Captain alone lost in another dimension where the maps are useless and the ocean is endless.

The battle taking place on the Western Front during October 1917 was not ‘the second battle of Passchendaele’, it was the third battle of Ypres, also known as ‘the battle of Passchendaele’.
