Why show mercy for Sarah who murdered children, but show no mercy for the poor women who had babies and felt there was no other option than to give their children away or face the scorn of society?? I've heard so many stories like this, and I feel so bad for the women who were shamed and cut out from their families. I believe they thought they were doing what was best, and never wanted any harm to come to their babies. Where are the fathers of these kids!? The women are always to blame.

@@kathyjones1576exactly, it's a sign of the times. Men can't get pregnant so there's the pass for no responsibility. Also paternity tests weren't a thing so even if the mom could identify the father, all he had to do was deny and persuade others that she was "loose" which put doubt on paternity. Worse, if they were rich, they could throw the mom in an institution and send the kid away like one president did. Can't remember his name but he married a girl he was basically a father to. Even stated when the girl was eight, he was gonna wait to marry her. He...was a gross guy.

Thank you for our weekly dose of Brief Case! What a grim outlook for small children at the turn of the century due to baby farming! it was a transcontinental epidemic. It's sickening that the children had to be exposed to such people and conditions due to their parent's financial or social disadvantages. Mr. Makin's lack of remorse and nonchalant demeanor is chilling to say the least. 😟

It was not always due to financial or social disadvantages. I remember, when reading about the life of St Theresa of Lisieux (France), that her mother was unable to breastfeed and had to resort to wetnurses. They would be in the countryside while the family lived in town, so visits were infrequent. During one visit, they realised that their son was gravely undernourished but unfortunately it was too late to save him. The parents were devastated. I was very shocked that such a thing could happen but after this video I realise that it was sadly quite common

The worst thing about stories like this is that CPS is supposed to protect children these days, and it seems no matter what we do, many children go unwanted and abused. So many children are abused, graped, go missing, and are even unalived whilst in CPS custody. No matter the time, children are playing the lottery just being born in any century.

My mother was one of ten children raised in poverty in Tottenham. She was born in 1940 and died in 2007. Around ten years before she died, it was discovered that there were in fact eleven children but my grandmother gave one away without any legal paperwork, to a neighbour. This aunt of mine had emigrated to Canada as a child. Her return to the U.K. was something of a surprise as you can imagine. I expect it still happens in poor communities today.

I'm familiar with "baby farming," as I have read and seen programming about it. There were a lot of people including this despicable couple the Makin's who took in innocent babies for financial gain, only. I have the utmost compassion for the young unmarried mothers who had to give up their babies because of society's morals. May the souls of these precious babies rest in eternal peace. 🌹 Great investigating, presentation, historical information, back stories, illustrations and photos, too.

@@kenya1067the pay for the mothers actually isn't enough for one person to live on. Women at the time supplemented low wages with sex work to have a full stomach and shelter. Children out of wedlock made it impossible for women to get work outside of the sex trade. It is better to prevent a pregnancy or even abort a child because there no support for the child to be productive member of society. Even now children are still very expensive and men don't really understand that. In the US there's 400000 children in the Foster care with no chance of adoption or successful life.

Without justifying in any way those crimes, we have to remember that, in that time, babies and small infants were thought to be only capable of eating and sleeping. The fact that small children are capable of emotions and therefore emotional trauma is very recent. Even in the second part of XXth century, children were commonly operated without anesthetics as it was assumed by "science" that they could not suffer as their nervous system was not yet fully developped.

Thank you for posting this and thank you for turning off the sound of the advert, I hope this won’t put you at a disadvantage. This case illustrates how juries can be influenced. John Makin was clearly a despicable man and his demeanour in court did him no favours. Sarah had to live with this awful man and that may have an impact on her and her distress during the trial seemed to have caused the jury to have pity on her. I don’t think she deserved the early release from prison, she had shown no mercy to the poor babies. I feel sorry for the babies and their mothers.

Of course, the moral code that deemed illegitimate babies to be permanently stigmatised and that judged their mothers to be fallen women, should be standing in the dock along with the Makins. So too, the double standard that exonerated the fathers if they preferred to not take responsibility for planting their seed in the first place. So too, the moral restrictions on access to contraception, which doomed so many women to dropping a baby every year. So too, the harsh conditions inflicted on the poor and working class of the time that forced so many to give their children away. I'll stop now as the dock is getting a bit crowded.

I don't understand why these backfiring practices were kept for so long... there was also a custom in austro-hungarian empire (at least there) that prevented military-like occupations (not only soldiers, but also guards, gamekeepers etc.) from getting married until some degree of income, which meant they had to wait until they were even almost 40. This was intended to protect their families and ensure stable income. But what actually happened was that they of course had families, but were not married, so it even made the life of their children (and partner) much worse, because these occupations were also quite dangerous, meaning that the father could have died before he was allowed to marry and legitimize his children (and provide some kind of compensation due to being harmed while in service). I saw these cases many times, the children sometimes listed their father in censuses and their marriage records, even though it was "illegal" when they were not legitimate. I've also seen a case when a daughter of such couple married aged 18 and her parents married about a year AFTER her, so her legitimization was entered subsequently into her marriage record creating a mess :D (I genuinely think, even though I have no statistics to prove that, that there were more families of these occupations who lived years unmarried and hoping for a good end than the intended families that really started after obtaining the permission.)

I can’t imagine handing my child over to someone who professed to care for it along with weekly payments, only to find out that they died months ago probably from starvation or were killed. They most likely paid for weeks when their child probably had died months earlier. I hate how greed consumes people. At first I thought, out of 10 children, there would be a few babies in between that didn’t make it until the ages were revealed. Thank -you B.C. What an awful case. I think the right one hung, lazy terrible man. Baby farming was an infamous business and often ended in the child's demise. When the children were insured it was even more prevalent by nefarious criminals under the umbrella of caring. Society was to blame, tarring single poor mothers impregnated by men with more money and power. Poor women with abdominal husbands, often handy with their fists, who could not provide for the numerous children they fathered. Thanks BC for another historic case to make us think.

You'd think that a woman who had raised 10 children would have known how to manage the money the mothers paid her. She and her husband could have supported both themselves and the babies, even saving some of the money. I bet murder was the husband's idea. He was probably one of those people who would "quiet" a noisy baby by putting a pillow over it. Her crime was not telling -- though she may have been afraid to.

I agree. Why would they murder a baby when the parents were willing to pay weekly - as long as they could see her? That makes no sense. Like you, I bet it was the husband who insisted on the murders, and the wife had to go along with it. A man who could kill infants was certainly capable of harming women too.

My bet was that both of them implemented the plan to kill the babies. She is the one who looked the mothers in the face and sweetly assured them she would love and care for them. She was as guilty. All she had to do was mosey on off to the police station without his knowledge and turn him in if he acted alone.

Thoroughly covered in good timing . The brutality of Britannia continued in a new country with robustness. The people of the country watching for the first time witnessed human cruelty beyond my imagination. The stranger's hung people as soon as they got to land. Maybe before the flag was raised . claiming for Britannia , A reflection of Victorian England. For their own reflective desires.................. Land 😮😢 Australian history is brutality.

It may just be my perception but [based largely on his demonstrated disinterest in gainful employment] I suspect Mr. Makin was entirely behind this nefarious enterprise. Based on his picture, he also appears the sort who would - without a second thought - soundly thump his wife and/or daughters if they didn't do exactly as he said, as well.

Did these victims get justice? I don't really think so, Sarah was just as culpable as her husband! She looked these young women and couples in the eyes and assured them their children were safe, only to murder them in the exact same clothing they was wearing when their mother's handed them over 😮. Even more sad, most likely the servants were victims of the men they worked for, only to have their virtue and mortality questioned. 😢 A period of time in which i would want to visit but be king or queen and change this NARRATIVE.

It always amazes me how anyone is surprised that a human being can’t take unending pressure and still exhibit the poise and moral equilibrium of a modern, “well-bred” humanitarian. I feel for those women whose society placed them in untenable positions without the means to survive, let alone thrive, and then condemned them for being the victims they obviously were. Not that it isn’t still happening. 🤮 Thanks for telling these stories.
