You have to remember that Hamish won the Hunger Games once himself and no doubt has some PTSD. but he's also had to mentor and watch tributes from his district die every year since then. No wonder he drinks.

Also, Haymitch won his games (a special version with 48 tributes instead of 24) by taking advantage of the force field around the arena. He noticed that if you threw rocks at it, they bounced straight back at you. At the end of his games, Haymitch was badly wounded and the girl who was left threw an axe at Haymitch. He ducked and when it hit the force field, the axe bounced back and struck the girl in the head, making Haymitch the winner. The Capitol felt Haymitch had won unfairly and in retaliation, killed his girlfriend and his entire family. That's why he was warning Katniss that they don't take these things lightly. Between that and watching his tributes, who had no chance, die quickly year after year made him turn to drinking. When Haymitch saw he finally had tributes with some hope of winning, he cleaned up his act. There's one scene where a servant is about to fill his glass with more alcohol and Haymitch puts his hand over the glass to prevent it. Easy to miss but it was an important sign of the changes in Haymitch.

Yeah Katniss's plan was just to blow up their supplies, that way they have to spend more time foraging etc rather than hunting other tributes. Also that puts Katniss at an advantage because she's skilled at living in the woods whereas the tributes from the richer districts would be less practiced.
@virsaviat2325

Re your question about where Katniss learned her archery: it's not explained in the movies at all, but her dad taught her that when she was really young, before he was killed in a mining accident. Hunting in the woods surrounding District 12, is illegal (that's why Katniss keeps her bow and arrows hidden in the woods), and that's why District 12 is fenced off, and the fence is supposed to be electrified (hence the "High voltage" sign), but it's not, because the authorities are not that bothered to waste the power on the poorest district, which 12 is. Peacekeepers in District 12 are also really corrupt, and often just coudn't be a*sed to do a proper job, so they Katniss quite frequently even sold her game to them (note how in the beginning, in the woods scene, Gale asks her what she would do with a deer, and Katniss says "I'd sell it... to the peacekeepers").

"What do they do with the bodies?" It's explained in the book but not really addressed in the movies. The Capitol collect them, picking them up in (practically invisible) ships along with any weapons left with them as soon as anyone else moves away. That's why Katniss had to go and grab the bow off of Glimmer so quickly, before it was taken away. When she was putting Rue to rest she couldn't really stray away too far to stop them collecting her.

Katniss is the hero, to be sure and created the spark to light a rebellion, but Rue was really the catalyst or martyr that ignited the entire situation that allowed it to blossom and take hold. If katiniss had not taken the time to honor Rue (in the midst of a fight for her life) and taken time to protect her, none of that wouldve happened. The people noticed and began to actually fight back

James, having read the books I’m not surprised that there was a lot you didn’t recognize. While the story is the same, it’s easy to manipulate details in a movie to make it more watchable. Visuals inspire you the way that the cinematographer wants them to. Kind of like the game makers.

The kids names are put in the bowl every year from 12-18 in the districts and it's cumulative. If you are poor and starving you can opt to put your name in more times in exchange for grain and oil. You can do this for every member of your family. There are five members in Gale's family and he's been getting them all grain and oil since he was 12. That's why his name is in so many times. It also divides the people within the districts against each other. Those who are better fed and don't have to put their names in more often vs. the starving. District vs district, rich vs poor All a distraction to divide each other and prevent them from uniting.

Great editing there, James. That scene with Peeta talking about his crush, then you cut to her angrily elbowing him to the wall, seriously, that's pro editing there. And speaking of "I've read the books..." and stuff... I know you mentioned way back that you'd read The Firm and that you "know the story" 'so why bother'... but I can not beGIN to implore you, lol... PLEEASE watch the movie. And I'm not even a Tom Cruise or book or book author fan, I just think it's a well made movie. Sure, you know the 'story', but that's what makes cinema, well, cinema. The choice of cuts, the music, the lack of music, the tight close-ups, why a wide shot is used, why a camera sits on a persons face even when they've finished talking... or cuts away. It's one of those movies that I've honestly lost track of how many times I've watched it. Just seeing how a director can juggle so many characters, and yet you hardly notice the 'choreography' of it all. Nothing like Hunt for Red October (another film where multi locations and characters are effortlessly weaved together) that you already watched. You don't have to watch it... but I hope you just consider the points I've raised in approaching this movie, or any movie for that matter; honestly, I'd hate for you to overlook this one 'just' because you've read the novel already. Did I mention pleeease? lol. - still subscribed and always will be :)

I haven't read all the comments and maybe someone told you already, but the ways you can get your name in is with your age (first year is one time, second year is 2 times, third year is three times etc) and you can also put your name in more times in exchange for grain and oil for each member of your family, per year. So Katniss would put her name in 3 times for herself, her mother and her sister, on top of the ones that are automatically in. Gale's number is high (42) because he has his mother, 2 brothers and a sister

I have the book series but haven't got around to reading them. The films are pretty good. As for your book, just keep writing. It took about 5 years to get my first book finished with a false start and rewrite, plus all the editing. The second book has turned into a monstrous difficulty with two moves due to landlords deciding to sell, losing my private office space in the last move, dealing with long Covid, and several other life-interruptions, plus parts of my plan for the series not turning out how I anticipated in book 2 requiring some rethought. You just have to push through. When you get a finished book in your hands, it is a good feeling, but it is a lot of work.

@@AwesomeUSMovies same here. My dark fantasy series (seven books maped out by scene, one book out in the world, second one in the works and getting most of my attention), a second dystopian series, first book partially written (probably two books, one covering the fall of society from its heights to total collapse, second one deep in the collapse and disentigration/attempt to regroup), then there is a two to three book Middle grade novel series (the first book planned out by chapter). Then there are a dozen or so ideas they may never go anywhere. That's probably how it is for most writers. Let me know when yours is done and ready to go out into the world, I'd be interested.

Its actually a funeral symbol specific to district 12, which is why its such a big deal that the residents of district 11 do it back in solidarity when rue dies

"what do they do with the bodies?" well...in the book, the organisers pick them up the moment no one is watching and take them away, use genetic manipulation and turn them into horrible half-dog monsters meant to hunt down and kill all the surviving tributes.

@@AwesomeUSMovies Not you or in casting; entirely a bunch of viewers' reaction to the character on-screen. To listen to them, they couldn't see Rue as somebody "vulnerable", "cute", "tragic", etc. ENTIRELY because she was Black, despite the fact that if they'd bothered reading the damn book she was all along. The backlash resulted in the actress getting harassed too despite being a freaking child, and remains a stain on this film's legacy to this day. Even before the 2016 election, if anyone needed any basic proof that something is deeply wrong within the American people, this movie's reaction is a good example.
