The real story behind Disney's Mulan.

Description:
You have probably already watched the Disney movie “Mulan,” and you know that this hero would be your favorite Disney princess if she were part of royalty in China. But did you know that, even though we’ll never know if she existed or not, her fairy tale was actually based on a story that was told centuries ago? This is why we are showing you the messed up origins of Mulan.
In the Disney movie, Mulan was supposed to become a housewife like many other women, but she failed the test with the matchmaker. This is why she decided that she was going to take her father’s place and her family was shocked when they found out about her decision. What happened in the original story?
We all know that Mulan was not very skilled when she joined the army and she had to work hard to learn how to fight like a man in the movie. But in the original fairy tale, she already knew how to fight and practiced martial arts with her father.
And we won’t forget about the love story with Li Shang. In one of the original tales, our favorite hero also fell in love with a man named Jin Yong. When he found out that she was a woman, he became more attached to her. Unfortunately, we don’t know how this fairy tale ended.
Stay tuned if you want to hear more about the messed up origins of Mulan like what happened when she revealed that she was a woman and how her story really ended. So which tale do you prefer: the Disney movie or the original story? Don’t be shy to answer in the comments section down below. We love to hear what you think.

So as a Chinese student, I had to recite and study Mulanas ballad in order to take the exams, so I'm quite familiar with the story. I'll try my best to tell the tale. It's a song/poem originally, so it not the most accurate. The sounds of Mulan working loom echoed in the room. The sound stopped, everything was silent, and her sigh was heard. They (her family) asked was on her mind, why she was sighing. (She replied) the war scrolls I saw last night, twelve of them, every one had father's name. Father doesn't have an elder son, I don't have an elder brother. I am willing to gallop on a horse, to replace father's place in the army. Buying a fine horse in the East Market, buying a saddle in the West Market. Buying a rope?(idk horse riding) in the South Market, buying a whip? in the North Market. I leave mother and father in the morning and rest for the night beside the yellow river. I don't hear my parents calling for me, but the sound the river streaming. I leave the yellow river in the morning, and rest for the night at the black mountain (they say it's the yanshan, idk). I don't hear my parents calling for me, but the sound of galloping horses. I have walked millions of miles doing army work, crossed mountains at the speed of flying. The cold winds from the north are making sounds in the silent night, the cold moonlight is shinning on my metal armour. Hundreds of warriors who have fought in the war are dead, after ten years of battling, the strong men are returning. The warriors return the meet the emperor, who is sitting on the throne. The rewards given will be accorded to the effort you made, the rewards can be abundant. They ask her what she wants, “I do not wish to become an advisor, 8 wish to borrow a strong and wise camel, to bring me back home” The old couple hear of their daughter's return, they hold onto each other (hinting that they're old) and walk towards to city gates. The elder sister hear of her younger sister's return, and she puts makeup on. The younger brother hear of her elder sister's return, and he prepares a fine meal with pork and lamb (So the original wording is kinda hilarious. He sharpens knives together, by rubbing them together, and points them towards pigs and sheep. This hints that Mulan returning home is a big deal. Obviously meat was rare and expensive back the day, and the old shouldn't move too much. Can't explain why her sister's putting on makeup though. Apparently it's for the same reason but I don't get it. I'm rambling at this point, let's continue). I open my eastern door, and sit on my west bed. I take off my war time clothes and put on my old clothes. I face the window to fix my hair and face the mirror (metal pan or something) to stick on a yellow flower (? I cannot find a translation so I put it through Google Translate. It's basically a type of decoration ancient Chinese women used to use. Some say it's a golden yellow piece of paper, some say it's yellow paint). I walk out to see my warrior friends, they look at me in shock. “Working together for 12 years, one had no idea Mulan is a woman!” The feet of a male rabbit are scratching, the eyes of a female rabbit are enchanting. When two are side by side, who can tell if I'm a man or a woman? SO TIRED FROM TRANSLATING. SOMEONE PLEASE NOTICE ME!

Mulan did the romance sub-plot very nicely. It wasn't the focus because she was in it for her father but she captured Shang's attention by simply being herself and the end is left open-ended with Mulan inviting a flustered Shang to dinner. It was cute because you get to see a glimpse of a shy, awkward Shang, when he's normally professional and composed. You're reminded how young he still is. I would like a combination of the Disney and ancient version where Shang and eventually other comrades find out she's a woman but keep it secret from enemies then she goes to war dressed as a female.

@@noahmizen7001 I think even today, if you had faked your identity to join the army, you'll probably face very serious repercussions when you are found out. The people in ancient times, and in China till now, is very brutal. Death sentences are handed out pretty easily, so that's an unfortunate part of this story, which... As mentioned, is pretty likely and pretty close to reality ...

I studied a few other versions of Mulan's legend. One of those versions mentioned that Mulan was originally just a regular woman who did ordinary things that women during ancient times like needle work and other stuff. There was no mention of her martial prowess before she joined the army. In that version, her family allowed her to take her father's place in the army. It's a bit interesting to note that while she kept her identity as a woman a secret, her family was more worried about her chastity than... Well, almost anything else (this is understandable considering that a woman's chastity was seen as something more important than their lives). She had a little over a decade of military service. Due to her outstanding military contributions she was awarded a position in court but she rejected the offer. She went home, revealed to her comrades that she was a woman, and then married her neighbor/ childhood sweetheart. Other versions have roughly the same setting except that the person who married her would change depending on which version it is. Some versions omit her life after returning home altogether. The oldest known version of her tale didn't even say much about her life and only briefly mentioned her outstanding military merits.

Shang wasn't in the original story.

Most jobs don't require you to be unattached...also I've never known a girl to feel forced to grow up, get married, and have kids. I'm sick of hearing people blame Disney for making girls think they can or can't do things. We've had so many "rebellious" Disney girls that I don't understand why people still complain about it. Back in the 80s we were already taught that we can be whatever we want. Be a doctor, a teacher, a construction worker, a stay at home mom, a lawyer, a plumber, an architect, a spinster. To clarify: I agree with the original comment.

Mulan never got married but when she was offered to be promoted she decided to go home instead. If she ever admitted that she was a woman in front of the emperor she would have been killed for lying to the emperor for being a man.
@r6guy
@r6guy 6 жыл бұрын
that's bullshit, she never explicitly said she was a man nor was there any law prohibiting women from joining. women were simply not required to, which is why this story was told inthe first place. her love for her family, motivated her to put herself in danger when she didn't need to.

Ibnziyad Tariq he is actually telling the truth, because lying to the emperor is a big thing in ancient China. There is a crime called 欺君之罪 just simply means the crime of lying to the emperor. And the punishment of that is death.

r6guy clearly you don’t know anything about China. In the past women are not allowed to do a lot of things like going to school. Also if a woman be a little bit closer to man she will be see as an unfaithful woman and not pure and she might never get married because no I will marry her. So do you think at that time they will allow woman to join the army full of men? That is just impossible. And all he said is based on a poem I think every Chinese and Taiwanese student must learn and remember when they’re in junior high.

Some corrections about this video 1. Milan was weaving instead of washing clothes ( according to Mulan's family's society level, she does need to do this , but every girl need to know how to do sewing and weaving as one of the basic skill for woman at that time ) 2. Women does not allow to go to the war at that time ( in fact , girls from a family cannot step out of the home normally , women kept as a thing around That dynasty ) 3. It does not have love story through the whole story 4. Milan had gone to battle field for many yrs instead of twelve yrs, the twelve in ancient Chinese scrolls means many instead of twelve 5. No one knows Mulan is a girl until she backed to home 6. Mulan dies have brother, but only a younger brother 7. This is original scroll in Chinese and every student need to remember it during the junior high in modern China : I still remember it was a nightmare to remember this scrolls , we literally need to remember every single words and punctuations and write it done by memory and also write out the translation in modern Chinese 😂

Okay thanks! That helps. I think that that's why in a video I watched. It said in a variation that she was in the war for a long time and when she came back, everything was in ruins (like everything in her hometown, etc.). With everything gone, she had either been honorably discharged, wasn't paid because she was a woman or just didn't get much or it eventually ran out, so then she had to become a prostitute since there was no one to marry. Or they found out and she went back home but because of the devastation of war, her home was gone.

"...we prefer the version without anyone in her heart...you don't need a prince to be a princess..." I stopped the video at this point. First off, this remarks implies that those in a relationship are not as 'strong' or as 'independent' as someone who isn't in a relationship. Secondly, each of us possess masculine and feminine aspects within ourselves. The tale of fa Mulan and her relationship between fa Mulan and her lover can be interpreted as the feminine and masculine energies becoming one with each other. In fact, a lot of these mythical tales could be interpreted as reflections of the human psyche.

True she was not a princess in theory, but she is still recognized in Disney’s Princess Line. I think Disney just gives the title of princess to all of their leading female characters regardless of if royalty was even involved in the story.
@Moon._Baby

Jorge Acosta That should not be, its very ignorant to me. Mulan was a warrior, a damn good one, and to me calling her a "princess" is actually quite insulting. Yea people can say "a princess can kick ass too" but realistically speaking upon words and the meanings of such, calling a warrior a princess is like saying fire is cold.

Disney gives out the princess role as well if the female lead did a great dead or saved a great problem so in Disney's eyes she is considered a Disney Princess even if she wasn't a princess in truth.

You forgot the ending in which the emporer was so impressed with mulan, that he wanted her to be his concubine (basically a sex slave), so instead of meeting this fate, mulan killed herself. Also, there's nothing wrong with mulan wanting to be married. It doesnt mean that she NEEDS a man, just that she WANTS one. Really getting sick of the whole, "you don't need a man" narrative, and making it out to be oh such a bad thing if the character DOES want to get married. You can be strong and independent while also falling in love. What's so bad about that?

Bry Alien besides i think in mulan is one of the classic disney "princess" movies where the romantic relationship has some form of development ( specially in mulan 2) and is a good relationship where both of them are still independant and strong minded, and they fight ( verbally) and disagree a lot, but they somehow find a way to balance each other, a common topic of agreement with work and talking. for what disney princesses used to be is a pretty good and equal relationship what mulan and shang have...

The original poem was short and simple. Mulan heard the news about her father was called to be soldier, her father was old and her brother was little, so she decided to replace her father's position. After the long battle and overcome all the hardships, many people died in the war, luckily Mulan was alive and had been praised by the emperor, Mulan rejected all the reward, she simply wished to be home. After she changed into her old custom and embrace her old family, her military allies were shock to find out she was a woman. The story was a anti-war story, the storyteller was confessed the truth as the war influenced everyone in the country. It's interesting how Disney transformed into a beautiful story. In China many researcher have different opinions about what age what place the story took place in reality. There is an saying that it did had women joined the army, and the story was written for them, not for a typical person.

The story first appeared in a poem written in the 5th century. There is no evidence showing that the story is true, and later versions of the story is very likely based on this poem. The only thing scholars from ancient China could verify was which war Mulan allegedly fought in, but not the story itself. What this video does is debunking Disney's version with unverified versions, which, in my opinion, is hilarious. She should at least mention the original poems.

Most of the elements of the original Chinese tale I like... and it makes sense. It even proves that women were not merely creatures with no other purpose than making babies and if proved capable could rise high in society. The narrator's comments however, of how we'd ALL rather see Mulan alone and without a man is a ridiculous comment from a VERY extreme feminist (possibly even lesbian) view and one which CLEARLY from the Chinese tales, Mulan herself would NOT have shared. SHE (the narrator) may have loved seeing Mulan alone loving only her father, but I liked her finding a husband SHE liked, who saw her as an equal and having a family. The second less happy ending of the Chinese versions proves this and speaks volumes. It's also the most likely outcome of Mulan not finding love and marrying. Spending years wasting her life fighting (a view shared by many disillusioned male glory hunters as well) Mulan comes home to find her beloved father dead. She's probably not the most desired match for a wife by now because of age, battle scars, etc and she has ptsd's. She ends up alone, childless and mentally damaged. Only Susan B. Anthony (and others like her) would have seen that as a acceptable price for Mulan to pay. Finally, Mulan was NOT a princess in either the Disney version or any of the original Chinese versions. So the notion of Mulan not needing a man to be a Disney "Princess" is silly.
@chikaka2012
@chikaka2012 5 жыл бұрын
Darryl Mallard I agreed until you started hating on Susan B. Anthony. Anthony only had an issue with marriage in which women are subjugated, as was the law in her youth. She actually advocated most powerfully on behalf of married women and managed to secure property rights for them. Not sure what you mean by “others like her.”?? I think being compared to her would be a great compliment.
@darrylmallard2532
@darrylmallard2532 5 жыл бұрын
@@chikaka2012 Actually, this is NOT true. Susan B. Anthony was VERY clear in her disapproval of Ida B. Well's, her black counterpart in the movement, getting married to a successful and VERY supportive black lawyer. When confronted by Wells, Anthony expressed her opinion that women in the movement (or her per say) should not marry or have children. Ida's response was that if SHE was content to not have a man, family and sacrifice all for the movement (it was a well-known secret that the woman was a lesbian anyway) that was fine... but SHE liked men, wanted children and her husband supported her and the women's movement 100%. My personal opinion on this matter is that Susan may have had designs of a sexual nature on Ida herself and was frustrated. In any case, maybe Anthony's and Ida's differences formed my opinion of Susan's overall mentality about women and marriage. I could be wrong.
@darrylmallard2532
@darrylmallard2532 5 жыл бұрын
In case my overall assessment of Anthony herself is incorrect, I'm sure you'll agree that there are extremist in EVERY organization, religion or movement... even the women's movement. These are the "Others" I speak of.

"We think that the Disney movie would have been more inspiring if the soldiers didn't care about Mulan's gender, but only cared about how good she was." And remove the sole conflict of the story? Stick to being an aggregate and leave the writing to the writers.

You're right, I don't disagree with you on that. What I'm trying to convey is that the movie already promotes the idea that women should not be discriminated based on their gender, and that's already an inspiring message. This video on the other hand implies that it would somehow be more inspiring if Mulan overcame LESS adversity than she already did.

I actually kinda agree with them on this point. I see too many movies where a woman's gender matters when she's in a profession that's male dominated. I'd be really interesting to have her be accepted right off the bat, as if nothing in the social dynamic had changed. Guys in the film would have been like, "A woman? Big deal! She kicks ass, that's all we care about." But I understand that wasn't the message Disney was trying to send out. The fact that her gender mattered was important to the narrative they wanted to tell.

The original Mulan story is recorded in as a legend poem. In the story, it just mentions ‘ She left the family in a morning ‘ but never says whether her family knew or supported her decision before she left home or not. My own point is they did not know before her leave. Because if Mulan is found out to be a girl, the whole family, but not just Mulan herself, will be put into the prison. Mulan doesn’t want her elderly dad to go to war, but why will her parents take a risk with the life of the whole family? (In the original story, she has a married sister and a very little brother as well. Once people find she is a girl, all those people may die.) what’s more, after her leave in the morning, she arrives the yellow river in the afternoon. The poem has a description like this: ’ her parents are calling her but she can never hear it now. ‘ ‘ Calling ‘ is not the reaction if her parents have already known her decision. If her parents know where she goes, they will be missing her instead of calling her. People later can have their own ideas about the part that Mulan left the family secretly or with the support of the whole family, since the original story doesn’t make it very clear, but it should not be a point to be judged. Mulan loves her dad so much so her family must give her a lot of joy and love as well. We should not think her parents send her to war on purpose.

The Ballad makes sense. It's admirable that her father thought that women should be able to defend themselves. In the end when you are all alone, no one can defend you other than yourself. Disney 2020 Mulan is straight out of a Kung Fu flick from childhood, and the father seems to disprove(They could have at least had her father praise her behind closed doors and wonder where she learned to do that specific set of moves, and she'd respond by saying that she took inspiration from the lessons he taught her).

Actually the original versions were less messed up than the Disney version. No dishonor to her ancestors was even mentioned in the originals and even though women were banned from being soldiers. She was not disrespected in the original stories because she had proven that she did belong in the military. In the Disney version she was thrown out in the snow and left to die, even though she saved the troops. Yes, her father died in a version, but that's a bittersweet ending not unlike many movies we see now. He was old and that's the reason why she took his place in the first place. Since she as a general, odds are her father already knew by news and gossip that she was a successful warrior and he died with pride. Sad, but not "messed-up".
