The Million Molecule Challenge for Life Extension - Matt Kaeberlein at Longevity Summit Dublin

The potency of therapeutics able to extend maximum healthy lifespan in mammals has stagnated, despite the explosive growth of the longevity sector: no new solution has outperformed calorie restriction by this measure in the nearly 40 years since its discovery. Matt Kaeberlein attributed this in part to a cautious focus on recognised biological pathways, and introduced his four-year project for an ultra-large-scale screen - the “million molecule challenge” - to detect novel healthspan-promoting agents that may inspire entirely new classes of interventions.

I get a refreshingly grounded and non-shady vibe from this vibe. People like Aubrey de Grey and David Sinclair have been great for raising the profile of aging research, but they are also overly optimistic and they both have issues. (de Grey's alcoholism, Sinclair's business shenanigans). I also really like Kaeberlein's dog aging project. I think it's great, and I can't believe we didn't try this at an earlier date. Unlike with mice, if something works on complex mammals like dogs, it is extremely likely to work on us. It appeals to us on a powerful emotional level too - most of us love dogs, and those of us who have had them wish they lived longer.

Appreciate Matt’s insights and it helps the field apply rigour and discipline. Kudos to Aubrey and team to include this, I was energized during this speech. It raises the bar.

On 9:30 the effect of Glucosamine, GlyNAC and Taurine on mice lifespan is not mentioned. Why?

Lots of things work on mice that don’t work on us, and I think he’s tired of mice studies.

So he poured water on the whole let’s live to be a 120 years in the next few years lollll…

He says elsewhere that current interventions could realistically enable us to live to 100 in good health, which is huge, but that "it is not unrealistic" to expect that what we will discover in the next 10 years could give us the ability to live to 110 or 120. Of course, if that works, then many of us will be living to around the year 2100. If we haven't solved aging in 80 years, if I'm still around, I'll eat my hat.

@@squamish4244 where did he say that ? source pls... so stay very healthy so to live another 30 years... that will enable us to live another 15 years extra atleast cause of the advancements in health ....... and all that might be the total time needed for A I to solve aging ( 45 years or so ) ... is that it ? sounds like a plan to me

@@zibtihaj3213 I forget where I read the quote, but Wikipedia says, "Kaeberlein has expressed the view that current advances in aging research could enable most people to potentially live to 100 or even 120 in good health." That is not at all an outrageous statement.

I see the end of the beginning. With a long way to go.

We are at the end of the beginning, for sure. The foundation is laid. The most promising signs for me is that AI is being implemented at all stages of the drug pipeline in massive pharma companies. AlphaFold 3, ESM3 (both of which just dropped in the last two months) etc. The potential of these programs is staggering. The outcome of this will be enormous. But it won't happen overnight.

This guy is the only sensible person in this whole industry I've heard. Everyone else seems to be a sharlatans. I understand enough biology to know when someone is bsing... And it's not even a good one

@@zibtihaj3213He’s authentic, but he is also not nearly this ambitious. He's more of a "Live healthy to 100 years" guy, which is great, but he's not into actual age reversal or moving past 120 years.
