Rick (Brendan Fraser) saves Evelyn (Rachel Weisz) from Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo) with the help of the mummy's worst fear… a cat.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Loosely adapted from the classic 1932 horror film starring Boris Karloff, The Mummy is set in Egypt, where over 3,000 years ago the high priest Imhotep (played by Arnold Vosloo) was given the all-important assignment of preparing the recently dead for their journey into the afterlife. However, Imhotep made one terrible mistake - he became smitten with Anck-Su-Namun, the mistress of the Pharaoh himself. Driven mad by jealousy and love, Imhotep murdered the Pharaoh, and his punishment was to be buried alive and suffer the torment of an eternal life in his wretched tomb. In 1925, a band of adventurers seeking fame and fortune - led by Rick O'Connel (Brendan Fraser), an American expatriate who has joined the foreign legion, and Evelyn Carnarvon (Rachel Weisz), an amateur archeologist - find a previously unknown burial site in Egypt. The team starts to dig, hoping to find lost riches, but instead they disturb the tomb of Imhotep, and soon the cursed priest rises from his grave to wreck vengeance on humanity. The Mummy was written and directed by Stephen Sommers, whose previous cinematic journeys into the past include The Jungle Book and The Adventures Of Huck Finn.

Fun Fact: The actor that plays Mr Henderson originally auditioned for the role of O Connell, he didn't get it but the director liked his acting so much he created the character of Mr Henderson just so he could appear in the film

I finally understand why Imhotep is afraid of cats. The cat, an holy animal in Egypt, is the face of the goddess Bastet or Ubasti. Bastet is also the protector of the pharaoh. Because Imhotep killed the pharoah, he is afraid of Bastets revange. (I'm Dutch so I don't exactly how you spell that word)

@@RichardTuckman cats are the guardians of the underworld in ancient Egyptian mythology. They are used to depict the goddess Bastet. The reason cats play a guardian role against the jackal of Anubis (even though dogs could easy fend of cats) is because cats were used to chase away and eat rodents that would eat and destroy the food surpluses the ancient Egyptians gathered. Because of this they revered cats as guardians against famine. So they honored them by using it as the emblem for their goddess Bastet and painting them as guardians against the escape of Anubis and the jackals that reside in the underworld.

During the battle of Pelusium the enemy carry the "sacred" animals in front of them to the attack. The Egyptians did not dare to shoot their arrows for fear of wounding the animals, and so Pelusium was stormed successfully

Lily Zerep Yeah. XoD That's one of the many unique characters this movie has. Like in Nightmare on Elm Street, it had no funny person. Freddy Krueger tried to be "funny" himself, but he's as lame when it comes to being funny, like he is a villain, compared to this. Both Johnathan and the Imhotep did have their funny moments, though Imhotep was mostly just creepy. But he looked kinda silly when he saw the cat.

That was a good way of showing respect to the concept they used in the movie which is Egyptian Mythology. Bcoz in egyptian mythology, cats are known for being holy or supreme. They were worshipped as there's a god named bastet who's head or whole body is personified as a cat. So before making conclusion maybe educate yourself first of what you're watching.

This part always made me sad, from when I first saw this movie in theaters as a teen up to now. The three American treasure hunters may not have been the most sympathetic characters, but I still liked Mr. Henderson (btw, the movie novelization apparently reveals that his first name was Isaac), he seemed like a pretty cool guy. RIP, Stephen Dunham.

That’s kinda the nuance of the story and writing that made this movie stick with me as a kid. The Americans kinda brought it on themselves through their greed and hubris, but like you said, they were T complete bastards and had moments of bravery and the movie does make you sympathise with them. It makes their deaths brutal, terrifying, tragic and serves to highlight how much of a horror that Imhotep is.

The film was terrifying, but this scene is traumatized my childhood. I remember how I couldn't sleep in my room without a night light until I turned 11 or 12, maybe 13. The mummy was my first adventure and horror film. I was 7 when I first watched it.

It explains why Beni mentioned that Imhotep does not like to be touched: Imhotep is still an undead at this point and thus can't touch the living yet. Imhotep's mouth rotting away when he kissed Evy was meant to motivate him to fulfill the curse and finish killing everyone who opened the chest.

Imagine a Star Wars / Mummy crossover. 1. "Who has touched you?" growls Pharaoh Palpatine when he sees Anck-su-Namun's smudged body paint. He begins electrocuting her with the Force. Imhotep grabs Palpatine from behind and throws him over balcony. 2. Imhotep is mummified alive and placed into sarcophagus, C-3PO approaches to tip jar of scarabs all over Imhotep. "In this tomb you will find a new definition of pain and suffering, as you are slowly digested over a thousand years..." 3. All of the camels are replaced with taun-tauns. 4. Mr. Henderson is replaced with Han Solo, and after Imhotep sucks him dry the camera pans down and he's frozen in Carbonite. 5. The old pilot who flies Rick and Jonathan to the City of the Dead, chased by Imhotep's giant sand face, who crashes, dies, and is buried in quicksand is Anakin Skywalker.

Imhotep’s fear of cats also helps him realize that he needs to finish regenerating fast in order to rid himself of fear.

Imhotep was afraid of cats because they’re guardians of the underworld in Egyptian mythology. Upon rising from the dead, Imhotep was afraid that cats could catch him and possibly send him back. However, he won’t fear them when he’s fully regenerated because once he is reformed, the cats can’t send him back to the underworld anymore.
