Merry dumplings, BC and everyone!

I pray that Charlotte is still paying for the false accusation and false execution of this young woman in the afterlife! So sad that such a weak case carried such a heavy sentence.

How awful it must feel to realize that you're going to be executed for something you didn't do. The poor girl was framed by her mistress who didn't care for her from the get go. All Eliza wanted was to do her work well for this family and unfortunate for her, it cost her her life. I think the sentence was to harsh for her since nobody actually died. The fact that the family was well to do played a part in her sentence, but in the end karma got them. Thanks BC!

Horrible horrible Charlotte. I'm sure all Eliza was guilty of was being good and her colleagues hated her for it. Including her mistress.

The poor in the eighteenth century (and even today) had little to no recourse to defend themselves against accusations. They were considered lesser than the elite and their word had little worth. Why would Eliza poison and risk killing an entire household, and herself, for a grudge against Charlotte? It makes no sense. Very sad. Thank you Brief Case for this Christmas present. After reading the transcript and listening to the video it would seem that the arsenic went missing long before the incident in the apprentice's bedroom, at least a week or two. So why would have the poor girl premeditated an incident that hadn't happened yet. There was something going on in the family that we didn't know about. Poor Eliza was set up.

12:20 i think she was innocent. Why would her employer be afraid someone else may be found responsible? Surely he would want the actual culprit caught if he really believed in her innocence! I wonder if she rejected her employer or one of the apprentices and they poisoned everyone on purpose. Which would explain why she got so sick too! Because why would she try to end herself? She would have no way of knowing how much to eat in order to not die! And her friend in the house? She only didnt die because she didnt eat any dumplings. Aresenic poisoning supposedly is extremely painful even if you don't die. I just dont think there was enough evidence to convict her. And definitely not sentence her to death

This was outrageous. Why would Eliza make herself sick along with the family if she had done it. And the master being afraid someone else would be found guilty so refusing to sign for her...he deliberately let someone who was probably innocent be executed. Terrible. Maybe he suspected his wife who happened not to eat the food herself.

Listening to this I find it at least as likely that Charlotte tried to poison the family - perhaps enough for it to look like a serious attempt but not enough to kill them, as Eliza. I'm certainly not convinced of Eliza's guilt.

One of the things that still surprises me is the ease of the death penalty back then. I can’t imagine how many innocent people lost their lives to false convictions. Thank you for telling this story. I’m not sure she did it 🤷‍♀️ Merry Christmas Mr. Brief Case

I personally don't believe Eliza tried to poison her employer's family, l think she was framed by the daughter-in-law, Charlotte. I definitely don't comprehend why Eliza would receive the death penalty due to circumstantial evidence plus the fact that none of her employer's family died. May the soul of Eliza rest in eternal peace.🌹

I think Ms. Fenning was set up. First off was the accusation that she was "inappropriately dressed". That was EXTREMELY hard to do considering the amount of clothing women wore at that time. Sounds like nothing but a set up.

Soooooo sad that Eliza's life was stolen from her, and that other innocent people suffered horribly from that arsenic-laced meal. It seems to me that Charlotte, who didn't like Eliza AND who stood to inherit everything upon the death of her family had more motive to commit this crime. Unless you believe that a respectable young woman with a fiancee was homicidal and suicidal after a reprimand from her employer.

As illness, injury and death take no holidays.. those of us working in hospitals ICU .. like me.. are here.. There is a book called "An Innocent Man" by John Grisham, documentary set in modern times about this very thing - innocent people paying for crimes they didn't commit. I'm all for the death penalty and for justice being served. But I believe in justice! It has to work both ways. I'm very sorry for Elizabeth and for anyone who is blamed for something they didn't do...And on that note - Happy Holidays, everyone to you and yours and your pets as well. Thank you, Brief Case, for the upload for the ones of us who do not celebrate for various reasons. It was positive that most people back then believed her. I think deep down Orlibar suspected Charlotte was involved, which was why he didn't sign the petition. This just looked like a way to send a message to poor servants and say "Don't even think about harming your masters. This is what will happen."

With an unlocked drawer and an open kitchen, other suspects DEFINITIVELY should've been considered. Anyone could've taken the arsenic and anyone could've tampered with the dumplings. Also, Mr. Turner's refusal to sign the petition is suspicious. It makes me wonder if he found out who the poisoner was after the fact 🤔

I guess the family got what it deserved at the end. Karma However, I think Charlotte set this poor girl up. She lost her life because of Charlotte, in my view.

This has to be one of the saddest stories of an injustice that was done to an innocent woman. The horrible part is that Charlotte got away with it. I only hope that later on, God gave Charlotte the justice that she deserved. It appears to me that she was probably jealous of Elizabeth and her beauty. I can honestly say this was one of the only stories that made me quite angry because Elizabeth went to the bakery and clearly Charlotte had time to mess with the food , why would even bother to eat the food if she planned on poisoning everyone. Eliza truly appeared to be innocent. It is curious that they didn't really investigate anyone else as the culprit. Charlotte had a motive, opportunity, and sounds like she was jealous of Eliza's beauty and probably innocent person was hanged.

I do, however, remember it as one I watched while trying to catch up on older ones. I still haven't seen them all yet. I remember, at the time, thinking it was Charlotte who had put the poison in the bowl. She didn't like Eliza, and probably wanted her gone, and that's how she got rid of her. Morbid, and extreme, when she could've, and should've, just fired her.

Allow me to translate this situation. That woman was jealous of Eliza for whatever reason. She was actually trying to make the servants sick and blame Eliza. She poisoned the wrong food, because she had never cooked a meal in her life. It still worked out getting Eliza hanged.

Thank You for today's crime, very much appreciated, if anyone did the poisoning hands down it was Charlotte, she seems to have had a rather spiteful streak in her, having been given the position of the mistress of house, rather than her mother-in-law, forefilling the duty, I think the position went to her head & out of plain malice framed Elizabeth, there's no mention of what became of Mrs Turner senior or of Charlotte on the downfall of the families situation in society, it would be interesting to know if Charlotte landed up in the Workhouse alongside her husband, or left him to his fate alone as she moved on with her life

Love the photos and artwork. This is the second time I've heard this, having seen the art only one before. The tale is still gripping and I feel that Elizabeth Fenning was basically railroaded into being the scapegoat of whom ever did the deed. After all - why would she poison herself? Unfortunately, we will never know who actually did the deed. Also, let this be a lesson to anyone who cooks. If something goes wrong with your dish - maybe you should throw it all out and try again.

Tomorrow, i must remember to email you a truly happy historic true crime case I discovered while researching another topic at work. Sometimes the dead body is the bad guy & it's a great case, plays out in a very narrative & theatrical fashion.
